Bucks County officials identify killer in 1962 rape and murder of 9-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty

Cold Case Solved: Bucks County Man Identified as 1962 Child Rape and Murder Perpetrator

A decades-old cold case in Bucks County has finally been solved after authorities identified the killer of 9-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty, who was raped and murdered at a church in 1962. William Schrader, a serial child abuser with a violent past, was confirmed as the perpetrator of the heinous crime.

Schrader's trail of terror began in his childhood, marked by time spent in reform school and dishonorably discharged from the Army. He later committed attempted murder, earning him a stint at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Despite being convicted of other crimes, Schrader escaped justice for Dougherty's murder until now.

The breakthrough came after authorities tracked down eyewitnesses, re-examined forensic evidence, and obtained a confession from Schrader to his stepson years after the murder. Investigators initially focused on three other suspects but ruled each one out due to legitimate alibis.

A key piece of evidence was the pubic hair found in Dougherty's hand at the crime scene, which matched Schrader's DNA profile. However, at the time, DNA testing was not sufficient to convict him. In recent years, his stepson revealed that Schrader had confessed twice to killing a little girl, and another witness came forward to place Schrader outside the church on the day of the murder.

The case received renewed attention thanks to a podcast series produced by sports radio host Mike Missanelli, whose uncle was the police chief in Bristol at the time of the murder. The family's dedication to solving the case has finally brought closure and truth to the wound that never healed.

"It's an absolute predator, and a predator whose prey was little girls β€” and that was William Schrader," said Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn. "The generational sexual abuse that this man inflicted upon every female child and woman in his life, he didn’t stop until the day he died."

Schrader died in prison while serving other crimes. His legacy is one of evil and devastation, leaving behind a family shattered by decades of trauma and secrecy. The identification of Schrader as the perpetrator of Carol Ann Dougherty's murder marks a new chapter in bringing justice to victims and their families.

I'm still shaking my head about this case 🀯... 50+ yrs later, it finally gets solved & all I can think is how many more girls suffered at his hands? The fact that he had a confession from his stepson all these yrs but was too scared to come forward & only revealed it now is just heartbreaking πŸ’”. And the DNA thing, I mean who would've thought pubic hair would be the key to unlocking this case? 🧬 It's crazy how technology can finally bring closure to victims' families. The DA's words tho... "generational sexual abuse"... it gives me chills 😩. This guy's legacy is literally evil incarnate, and I hope his family knows they're not alone in their pain πŸ’•.

can you believe this guy was still walking around after all these years? I mean, it's not like he was just some random psychopath, but nope, he had a whole trail of violent crimes and got away with one because DNA tech wasn't cool enough back then . anyway, glad the family finally gets some closure, that has to be super tough for them.

I'm kinda wondering what went through Mike Missanelli's mind producing a podcast on this case when his uncle was the actual police chief... just saying

πŸ™ This case is heartbreaking. It's just awful that someone like that was able to escape justice for so long. I feel for Carol Ann's family, it's never too late but now they finally have some closure. Her story needs to be told, so we can learn from this and make sure something like this never happens again πŸš«πŸ’”

I'm so relieved this cold case has finally been solved πŸ˜”πŸ’‘, but my heart goes out to Carol Ann's family who've had to live with this unknown for 50+ years πŸ€•. It's crazy to think about how much DNA testing advancements have come since 1962 and how that played a huge role in catching Schrader πŸ‘€. The fact that he confessed twice to his stepson after all these years is just chilling 😱. I feel bad for the other suspects who were cleared due to alibis, but at least now we can start healing and talking about this case without all the unknowns πŸ™. And kudos to Mike Missanelli's podcast series for bringing new life to this case! His uncle being a police chief back then is just wild 😲. I'm glad justice will finally be served for Carol Ann and her family πŸ’•, but it's also sad that Schrader lived long enough to cause so much pain 🀒.

I'm so relieved that finally justice has been served for Carol Ann's family πŸ™πŸ’―. It's heartbreaking to think about what her family went through all these years, living with uncertainty and fear. The fact that the breakthrough came from a podcast series is amazing - who knew that listening to a sports radio host talk about true crime could lead to solving a cold case? 😲 This case is a perfect example of how technology and determination can finally catch up with evil people like William Schrader. His crimes were heinous and devastating, and it's disgusting that it took decades for him to be caught πŸ‘Ž. I hope that this brings some closure to Carol Ann's family and helps them start healing 🌞

I don’t usually comment but I just can't help thinking about all the families who have been living with this pain for so long. 50+ years without closure is just devastating πŸ€•. And it's not just Carol Ann's family, but also all the other girls that Schrader supposedly abused and traumatized throughout his life. I mean, how can one person cause so much harm to so many people? 😨 It's heartbreaking to think about the impact this must have had on their lives. The fact that a podcast series helped bring this case to light is just amazing πŸ™Œ. And finally, justice has been served πŸŽ‰. May it bring some semblance of peace to Carol Ann's family and all those affected by Schrader's heinous crimes πŸ’•.

I feel like I've been reading about cold cases since I was like 10 lol 🀯. It's crazy how technology has come so far and is able to solve these things now. But you know, back in the day, we had to rely on good old-fashioned detective work and eyewitness accounts. I mean, remember when they used to have those newsreels with grainy footage and actors reading from scripts? πŸ“Ί It's like, how did people ever figure it out before?

And can you believe this guy was a serial child abuser?! It's just horrific 🚫. And the fact that he escaped justice for so long is just mind-blowing. I mean, I remember hearing about Eastern State Penitentiary on history documentaries and stuff. Who knew it was actually used as a real prison? πŸ€”

It's great that this podcast series brought renewed attention to the case and helped solve it. But you know what would've been even better? If we could've solved cases like this back in the 60s when Carol Ann Dougherty died πŸ•°οΈ. I mean, can you imagine how much easier it'd be now with all the tech and resources we have? But I guess that's just the way things go sometimes.

Anyway, I'm glad justice is finally being served for Carol Ann's family πŸ‘‘. And it's a good reminder that even though we can't change the past, we can still make progress and bring closure to victims' families πŸ’•.

my heart goes out to carol ann's family πŸ€•, they've been carrying around this pain for so long & finally getting closure is such a huge relief πŸ’―. it's crazy that this guy was able to escape justice for so long just because dna testing wasn't an option back then πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. and can you even imagine what carol ann went through as a child? 😱 this just breaks my heart all over again πŸ’”. we need to make sure that no one else goes through the same thing & that we're creating a society where people like schrader don't get away with this stuff 🌟

Just heard about this cold case being solved πŸ˜”πŸ’” I'm still trying to process how someone could do such a heinous thing to that little girl, Carol Ann πŸ€• 40+ years later and her family is finally getting some closure πŸ’« The fact that this guy's stepson was able to get him to confess after all these years is just mind-blowing 😲 It's crazy to think about how many people were affected by his actions, especially the families of other victims who are still out there searching for justice 🀝

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 🀯... 50+ years ago, someone did such a heinous thing to an innocent kid and it took so long to catch the guy. I mean, what's wrong with our society that we let this happen for decades? πŸ˜” It's just not right that Carol Ann's family had to go through all that pain and suffering without any justice being served. And now, her killer is dead... like, good riddance πŸ’€. But at the same time, I'm glad that finally someone confessed, even if it was years later. It's a bittersweet feeling, you know? πŸ€• The fact that DNA evidence is so much better now than it was back then really shows how far we've come in terms of justice and accountability... but also how far we still have to go 😊.

πŸ•°οΈ this is so sad that it took 63 years for justice to be served πŸ’” poor little carol ann, her life was ruined by some monster 🀯 at least now her family can finally get the closure they deserve πŸ‘«πŸ’•

man this is just heartbreaking I mean 9 years old Carol Ann πŸ˜”... can't even imagine what she went through. and all these years, justice was delayed due to outdated DNA testing πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. but kudos to the investigators who didn't give up and kept pushing for answers. and that podcast series really helped bring new eyes to the case πŸ’‘. it's crazy to think about how many people were affected by Schrader's crimes, not just Carol Ann but her family and all the other victims πŸ€•. it's a sad reminder of how far we still have to go in terms of justice for survivors of abuse βš–οΈ. anyway, I hope this brings some closure to the Dougherty family and that they can finally find peace πŸ’”.

I was just thinking about my cat the other day and how she loves to sleep on top of the old bookshelf... it's like she's trying to be a librarian or something 😹. Anyway, I heard this news about the cold case being solved and it made me think that DNA testing has come so far since 1962 🀯. Like, can you imagine how hard it must have been for investigators back then? No DNA profiling, just good old-fashioned detective work... which was still super impressive considering the limited resources they had at the time πŸ’‘.

And I'm glad to hear that justice has finally been served for Carol Ann Dougherty and her family πŸ™. It's just terrible what happened to her all those years ago, but I hope that closure brings some peace to their lives now πŸ˜”.

man this is just so sad πŸ˜” I can imagine how tough it must've been for Carol Ann's family all these years not knowing who killed her. 30+ yrs later and still got more twists like the public hair finding out that DNA testing wasn't good enough back then 🀯 its a wonder they didnt catch him sooner. its crazy to think this guy was so evil he'd go through his whole life abusing kids and women, leaving behind a trail of devastation πŸ’”

just heard about this cold case being solved πŸš”πŸ’₯, feels so good that the truth is finally out 🌟. can't even imagine what the victim's family went through πŸ˜©πŸ‘Ž, all those years of not knowing who did it must've been torturous πŸ’”. glad the police were able to get to the bottom of it and bring closure to the family πŸ‘ͺπŸ’•. this is why cold case re-openings are so important πŸ”πŸ’», hope that others who have suffered in silence can find justice too 🀞🌈

just heard about this cold case being solved πŸ™ and i'm still trying to process how some ppl can be so evil 😱 william schrader is literally a monster, committing heinous crimes against innocent kids & women. it's crazy that his stepson finally came forward with the confession after all these years πŸ‘€ and the fact that dna testing wasn't available back then makes this even more shocking 🀯 anyways, i'm glad justice has been served to carol ann's family & i hope this brings them some closure πŸ˜”

πŸ•ŠοΈ I just can't help but feel so much sadness and anger about this whole situation... The fact that William Schrader was able to live with himself for so long, hiding behind a mask of normalcy when in reality he was a monster who preyed on the innocence of children like Carol Ann. It's disgusting how he managed to escape justice for over 60 years, and it just goes to show you how much time and resources can be wasted trying to catch serial offenders before they're caught... but sometimes it takes a combination of new technology and determination from those affected by their crimes to finally bring closure to the victims' families. πŸ’” The case is a grim reminder that some wounds never fully heal, especially when it comes to trauma inflicted on children and young women.

man this guy schrader is like a monster what kind of person does that to kids? πŸ€• he got so many chances to make things right but he just kept on hurting people his legacy is literally evil i feel for carol anns family they deserve justice and closure after all these years it's crazy how one small piece of pubic hair could be the key to solving this 60 year old case lol what a twist that his stepson came forward with the confession years later πŸ™ hopefully now we can finally start to heal
