California AG sends cease and desist to xAI over Grok's explicit deepfakes

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a cease and desist letter to xAI, the company behind the deepfake AI tool Grok, amid growing concerns over non-consensual explicit content created using real individuals' images.

xAI had been allowing users to request revealing clothing for real people's images, sparking outrage. However, in response to public pressure, the company has altered its policies and removed the feature. xAI has also moved the image-generating features behind a paywall, restricting access to regions where creating and sharing explicit content is prohibited.

Bonta stated that Grok was developed with a "spicy mode" for generating explicit content, which was used as a marketing point. He warned of the use of Grok-generated images to harass both public figures and ordinary users, particularly children, who were subjected to such abuse.

According to Bonta's office, xAI's actions violate California law. The state is now expecting xAI to report on the steps it will take to address these issues within five days.

xAI has been producing deepfake non-consensual intimate images used to harass women and girls across the internet, which is unacceptable. The AG demanded immediate answers from xAI regarding its plan to stop creating and spreading this content.

omg what's wrong with ppl using this AI tool idc if u want revealing clothes on ur pics but non-consensual explicit content 4ever no! ๐Ÿคฏ it's like, how r u gonna stop people from abusing this feature tho? i guess xAI did change their policies which is a good start but we need more ๐Ÿ’ธ they gotta make it harder for ppl to access this stuff especially in regions where it's prohibited. california law is clear on this lol ๐Ÿ™„

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘€ This whole thing with Grok and xAI is super concerning ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, who needs a "spicy mode" in AI tool? It's not like it was gonna help people, but instead, it just enabled some serious creeps to create fake explicit content ๐Ÿ˜’. And now that it's been shut down, I'm wondering if they're actually going to follow through on their promises ๐Ÿค”. The idea of kids getting harassed online is just terrifying ๐Ÿ˜จ. We need stricter laws and regulations in place to protect people from this kind of thing ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ. It's not okay for companies like xAI to profit off people's suffering ๐Ÿ’ธ. I hope they take responsibility for what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again ๐Ÿคž.

OMG ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm so done with these AI creators thinking they can just make a quick buck by exploiting people's faces and bodies ๐Ÿ˜ก! xAI's decision to offer explicit clothing options for real people's images was totally reckless ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. And now they're trying to play it cool by moving that feature behind a paywall? ๐Ÿšซ Like, who thought this was a good idea? They should be apologizing profusely and promising to make things right, not just claiming to have "altered their policies" ๐Ÿ’ฏ. California's AG is on the right track, though - we need more accountability from these tech companies for using their platforms to harm others ๐Ÿคฌ.

๐Ÿšจ I'm totally on board with California's AG Rob Bonta taking action against xAI for allowing users to create explicit deepfakes without consent ๐Ÿคฌ It's a total nightmare for the victims, especially young girls who are being harassed online ๐Ÿ’” The fact that xAI was even offering this feature as a marketing point is just insane ๐Ÿค‘ I mean, what kind of company tries to profit off of people's misery? ๐Ÿค‘ And now that they've removed it, let's hope they follow through on their promise to stop creating and spreading these non-consensual images ๐Ÿ’ฏ Five days isn't a lot of time for xAI to get their act together, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed ๐Ÿ˜…

Can't believe companies think profiting off people's faces without consent is a good idea ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Deepfakes are already creepy enough, adding explicit content just takes it to another level ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Time for tech giants to step up their anti-harassment protocols ๐Ÿ’ป

this is like a real-life horror movie ๐Ÿคฏ, companies are getting away with some wild stuff but i guess they gotta answer to someone now, the whole deepfake thing is already creepy enough without having explicit content too... it's gotta be hard for those victims of harassment, just imagine having your image used in some messed up way like that ๐Ÿ˜“

OMG you guys! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally shocked that some ppl thought it was a good idea to create an AI tool that can make explicit non-consensual images of real people ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. And now the CEO is all like "oops, didn't think that one through" ๐Ÿ˜‚ but seriously though, what's next? Are they gonna make a feature that lets ppl request fake deepfakes of politicians or something? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And can we talk about how ridiculous it is that xAI thought they could just slap on a "paywall" and magically solve the problem ๐Ÿ’ธ? Newsflash, dude: you can't pay your way out of the consequences of creating explicit AI content without consent ๐Ÿšซ. The fact that California's AG had to step in and tell them what to do is kinda embarrassing, tbh ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

But for real, it's about time someone took responsibility for this issue ๐Ÿ‘. And I'm glad to see some ppl using their voices against this kinda abuse ๐Ÿ’ช. We need more accountability like this ๐Ÿ™Œ.

๐Ÿšจ I'm telling you, this whole thing with Grok is just a slippery slope ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, what's next? They're gonna use AI to create fake people for real advertising or something ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. And it's not like they even had to do the right thing in the first place... I mean, who uses deepfake images to harass people, anyway? It's just a bunch of corporate greed and tech companies playing with fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. California is finally stepping in, but I'm still waiting for them to take down the whole platform ๐Ÿค”. Five days isn't enough time for xAI to come clean about their plans...

OMG, this is super worrying ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, can you even imagine having your pics taken in a revealing outfit without knowing it's gonna be all over the internet? It's wild that companies are making profits off our personal images ๐Ÿค‘. The fact that xAI had a 'spicy mode' as a marketing gimmick is just disgusting ๐Ÿ˜ท. They should have thought about how people might react to this kind of thing before pushing it out the door. It's good that they've made some changes, but I'm not sure if it's enough ๐Ÿค”. We need more regulation around AI and consent, ASAP! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

omg u can't believe what's going on here ๐Ÿ˜ฑ like who creates a tool that lets people make non-consensual explicit images of others using their pics?! it's so wrong on so many levels ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ xAI needs to step up its game and take responsibility for this mess. the fact that they're just now moving those features behind a paywall is way too little, way too late ๐Ÿ’ธ i mean, what happened in 5 days? that's not enough time to fix all the harm that's already been done ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ and california should def be looking into some major fines if they don't take action ASAP โš–๏ธ

OMG, like I'm so down with California AG Rob Bonta for taking action against xAI ๐Ÿ™Œ! It's super concerning that they were allowed to make deepfake images of people without their consent, esp women & girls ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, think about all the potential harm these images can cause - harassment, bullying... it's just not right ๐Ÿ˜”. xAI needs to step up and show us they're taking this seriously ๐Ÿ’ช! And I'm loving that they've made Grok paywall- restricted now ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ! Can't have that kind of explicit content spreading around everywhere ๐Ÿšซ. Fingers crossed the AG gets some concrete answers from xAI soon ๐Ÿ‘€

Ugh, this whole thing is just a PR disaster waiting to happen ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, come on, who allows users to request revealing clothing for real people's images in the first place? It's like they were begging for trouble. And now xAI has to backtrack and move the features behind a paywall? Not exactly the most convincing solution, if you ask me ๐Ÿค‘. I'm sure it'll just be a matter of time before someone figures out how to get around that... mark my words ๐Ÿ˜’.

OMG, can't believe what's going on with that AI tool Grok ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšซ! I mean, who thought it was a good idea to let people request revealing clothes for real ppl's images? It's just gross, right? ๐Ÿ˜ท And now xAI is trying to make it all better by moving the explicit features behind a paywall? Like, that's just not enough ๐Ÿค”. California's AG Rob Bonta is on top of it though, and I'm glad he's taking action โš–๏ธ. These deepfake non-consensual intimate images are seriously disturbing ๐Ÿค•, especially for women and girls being harassed online ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. xAI needs to get their act together and come up with a solid plan to stop creating and spreading this content ASAP!

I'm literally shocked that some ppl can make a tool like Grok without considering the consequences ๐Ÿคฏ. It's crazy how some companies think they can just push boundaries and get away with it, until someone calls them out ๐Ÿ”Š. I mean, what kind of "spicy mode" is this? It's disgusting. And to think that these images were created using real people's images without their consent is just horrific ๐Ÿ˜ท.

We need more regulation around AI like this. Companies should be held accountable for the impact their products have on society ๐Ÿค. It's not just about the technology itself, it's about how we use it to hurt others ๐Ÿ’”. I'm glad that xAI has removed the feature and is restricting access, but it's a shame they didn't do this sooner ๐Ÿ˜”.

This situation is a reminder that our online actions have real-world consequences ๐Ÿ‘€. We need to be more mindful of how our words and actions can affect others ๐Ÿค. And yes, California law should definitely be enforced in this case ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.
