CBSO/Vänskä review – weird brilliance and neurotic tics in a compelling programme

Vänskä's CBSO debut brings Sibelius's lyricism to life in a compelling programme that balances myth and mysticism.

This evening's repertoire was anchored by the Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä, whose decades-long experience with Sibelius lent an air of authority to his interpretations. However, it was not just familiarity that made these performances sing – Vänskä had a knack for unearthing the innovative qualities in some of the composer's more conventional works.

The Karelia Suite, in particular, benefited from Vänskä's expert guidance, its central movement yielding to a richly textured harmony that grounded the music's folk-inflected sensibilities. Conversely, it was also in these same outer movements where Vänskä skillfully coaxed out the intricate counterpoint that underpinned Sibelius's orchestrations.

A more dramatic turn of events came with the inclusion of three lesser-known vocal works by Sibelius, starring a characterful Helena Juntunen. With each performance, she demonstrated her remarkable acting chops as the Finnish singer poured her heart and soul into roles such as 'Baron Magnus', an enchanting lyrical ballad about a nobleman's dalliance with a mermaid.

Juntunen's captivating performances not only proved to be character-driven but also showcased her exceptional vocal range, stirring the audience with every crystal-clear syllable. Her portrayal of a gloomy nobleman was equally compelling in 'Baron Magnus', where dramatic commitment and an absolute sense of emotional depth left the audience hanging on her every word.

The tone poem Luonnotar brought a new dimension to Vänskä's conducting, as it wove together a rich tapestry inspired by Kalevala. The music conjured up a world both beautiful and unsettling – Juntunen perfectly captured its 'weird brilliance', while Vänskä skillfully guided the CBSO through its numerous neurotic tics.

The evening also featured Shostakovich's 15th symphony, an enigmatic work that drew comparisons to Chekhov. In a bold move, Vänskä opted for a brisk, puckish approach to the up-tempo movements, allowing the music's intricate textures and sustained tension to shine through. A masterclass in orchestral playing ensued, as percussionists reveled in the symphony's neurotic eccentricities.

I was so blown away by Osmo Vänskä's performance with CBSO 🤩! As a parent, I love when kids (and adults alike) get to experience beautiful music that transports them to another world. It reminded me of how Sibelius's Lyric Suite sounds like a magical fairy tale come true ✨... for me it feels so uplifting and life-affirming 😊. The whole evening felt very intimate and engaging, I loved how Vänskä brought out the complexities in some of the pieces, even those that might seem more straightforward at first 🎵. And Helena Juntunen was absolutely phenomenal as a vocalist, she's got such a gift for conveying emotions through song 😊... made me think of my little ones' voices when they belt out their favorite tunes after a long day 🎶

omg this sibelius concert was EPIC 🤩!! i mean who knew conductor vanskas had so many tricks up his sleeve? and that female singer helena juntunen is like a national treasure or something 💫 her voice is giving me LIFE 🎶! but seriously, the way she conveyed emotion in those lesser-known vocal works was insane... i felt like i was right there with baron magnus singing about mermaids 🌊🏴‍☠️ also that luonnotar tone poem was like a whole different world 🌐 it's amazing how much depth and complexity vanskas brought to the music. can't wait for more of this guy's performances 🔥

I'm loving how Vänskä brought this Sibelius programme to life 🎵! It's clear he has a deep understanding of the composer's work, and his experience showed through in every performance. I mean, have you ever heard the Karelia Suite like that? The way the harmonies just swell and then break down into these intricate counterpoint bits... it's magic ✨. And those vocal pieces by Sibelius? Absolutely stunning. Helena Juntunen is a total treasure, she can convey such emotion with every syllable 💔.

I also loved how Vänskä balanced out the darker themes in Sibelius's music with some really uplifting moments. Like when he conducted Luonnotar, it was like you were transported to this whole other world 🌊. And that Shostakovich symphony? Whoa, what a wild ride 🤯! Vänskä's brisk approach totally worked for me - it was like a breath of fresh air after all that tension.

What I'm really curious about now is how the CBSO is going to top this performance 😅. Have they got any more Sibelius coming up?

man i was at this concert last night and osmo vanska is literally a genius with sibelius his energy and passion just radiates from the stage 😍🎵 he has this way of breathing life into these classical pieces that makes them feel so alive and connected to our emotions. the karelia suite is like a whole new piece when he conducts it, the harmonies are just richer and more complex than i've ever heard before 💥 and helena juntunen's vocals were insane she has this amazing range and control that just takes you on a journey with her singing 🌊🎶

I loved how Vänskä brought out Sibelius's unique vibe 🎵💫 especially with those lesser-known vocal pieces - Helena Juntunen is a total rockstar! Her acting skills are on point, you can feel her emotions pouring into every performance 🤩. And Osmo Vänskä's direction of the Karelia Suite was just pure magic ✨. I also appreciated how he balanced myth and mysticism in his programming - it really added depth to the evening 😌.

Vänskä totally brought the magic with that Sibelius debut 🧙‍♂️! I mean, you can tell he's been studying those Finnish composers for ages, 'cause his interpretations are on point. The Karelia Suite was like a whole new level of harmony and counterpoint – I was blown away! And Helena Juntunen's vocals? Whoa, she's got talent pouring outta every pore 💥. I loved how Vänskä coaxed that weird brilliance outta the tone poem Luonnotar, it was like a whole other world 🌐. Shostakovich's symphony, though – that bold move to speed things up was genius 🔥, now we're talkin' intense orchestral vibes!

🎵 I loved how Vänskä balanced out the dramatic pieces with this really cool tone poem Luonnotar 🌲 it reminded me of a Finnish forest, so beautiful and yet so eerie at the same time! Helena Juntunen was stunning as always, her vocals had that magic that just draws you in. And can we talk about Osmo's conducting skills? The guy is like a conductor whisperer or something 🤯 the way he coaxed out those intricate melodies from the orchestra was pure genius 🎶

🎵 I'm telling ya, the way Vänskä brought Sibelius's lyricism to life was simply magical! I mean, that guy knew his stuff 🙌. But what really got me was Helena Juntunen's vocals - she absolutely stole the show 💃! The way she poured her heart and soul into those lesser-known vocal works... it gave chills down my spine 🥶. And Vänskä's conducting? Top-notch as always 🎵. I swear, he has a gift for making even the most conventional pieces sound innovative 🤩. And that Shostakovich symphony? Absolutely mind-blowing 🤯! The way Vänskä tackled it with such precision and flair... it was like nothing I've ever seen before 🔥. Back in my day, we didn't have all these fancy recording studios and whatnot, but a live performance like that? It's like a work of art, man 🎨!

I mean, I've been listening to Sibelius for years since my grandparents used to play his stuff all the time 🎵... but honestly, Vänskä's performance last night was like a breath of fresh air! The way he balanced myth and mysticism in that Karelia Suite was pure magic ✨. And Helena Juntunen? Wow, she totally brought those vocal works to life! I loved how she poured her heart into 'Baron Magnus'... reminded me of when my favorite actress used to perform in the same theater 🎭. As for Shostakovich's 15th symphony, I was a bit skeptical at first but Vänskä really brought out its quirky charm 😏. The way he made that music sound like Chekhov's stories? Genius! Anyway, it felt like stepping back into the past when I heard Sibelius's music last night... so refreshing 🌙.

omg i'm so stoked about this concert!!! 🤩 osmo vänskä brought sibelius's music to life in such a compelling way and his expertise really shone through 😊 the karelia suite was on point especially that central movement, it was like he unlocked the secrets of the piece. and helena juntenen is literally amazing as a singer, her acting chops are insane 🤯 she poured so much heart into those vocal works, you could feel every emotion. the tone poem luonnotar was also super cool, it's like vänskä took us on this wild ride through finnish mythology 🌙 and shostakovich's 15th symphony... wow, vänskä's approach was so bold and brilliant, i loved how he let the music breathe. cant wait to see what else cbso has in store for us 😎

omg did u catch this amazing orchestra performance by osmo van ska?? he brought sibelius's music to life in a way that was like nothing i've ever seen b4 🤩 his interpretations were so authoritative and nuanced it was clear why hes been doing this for decades. but what really got me was helena juntenen's vocals - she had this wow factor that just drew u in every time she sang 🎶 especially in those lesser-known sibelius vocal works, she poured her heart out and it showed 🙌

I'm so over this classical music scene... everyone's just fawning over Vänskä's Sibelius debut like it's the most magical thing ever lol 😴 I mean don't get me wrong, he's a decent conductor and all but come on guys, it's not like he's the first one to bring out the Finnish composer's best stuff. And what's with the emphasis on 'myth and mysticism' every time? It's just music 🎵. Give me something with a little more edge or unpredictability for once... Shostakovich's symphony was actually pretty cool in that regard, but you wouldn't know that from all the soporific praise he got here 😴
