Chef who won Michelin star for seafood restaurant in New York to try his hand at pizza in Philly

Celebrated Chef Brings Big Flavor to Philly with Scusi Pizza Opening

Renowned chef Laurent Tourondel, who won a coveted Michelin star for his seafood restaurant in New York City, is taking on a new culinary challenge by opening a popular pizza spot in Northern Liberties. Scusi Pizza will open its doors on November 21st, marking the first of two restaurants that Tourondel plans to launch within Piazza Alta, a residential building adjacent to The Piazza apartment complex.

The menu at Scusi Pizza promises an exciting variety of pizzas with creative toppings such as pepperoni, anchovies, and mushrooms paired with prosciutto cotto. What sets this pizza shop apart is its generous offerings – from dipping sauces like pesto, truffle aioli, hot honey, or ranch to a selection of soft-serve ice cream flavors. Visitors can also enjoy Italian sandwiches made with pizza dough, ciabatta, or focaccia, as well as salads and small plates such as charcuterie, whipped ricotta with rosemary focaccia, and stromboli.

As part of its drink menu, Scusi Pizza features a rotating selection of soft-serve ice cream flavors, including unique options like chocolate hazelnut with butterscotch and vanilla with candied orange and pistachio. Visitors can also find small-produced Italian wines available for in-house consumption or take-out, as well as a selection of draft beers.

Scusi Pizza marks Tourondel's first foray into Philadelphia, although he has extensive experience running restaurants in New York and Miami. Notably, this is not his first pizza shop – in 2018, he opened Sag Pizza in Sag Harbor, New York. The website for Sag Pizza touts its wood-fired pizzas as embodying the "coastal charm of the Hamptons with the flavors of the Amalfi Coast." Similarly, Scusi Pizzas will feature dough that has been perfected over years to create a chewy and slightly charred texture.

Tourondel's culinary expertise is no surprise. The French native won a Michelin star for BLT Fish in New York City in 2005, although his restaurant lost the award the following year. He also received numerous accolades, including being named Restaurateur of the Year by Bon Appétit in 2007 and making Food & Wine's list of top 10 best new chefs in 1998.

The executive chef behind Scusi Pizza is Georgeann Leaming, a veteran of prominent restaurants like Gordon Ramsay Pub & Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay Steak, and R2L. Leaming won an episode of the Food Network's "Chopped" and opened two sandwich shops in Northern Liberties – Suppa and Samwich – before they closed. Her culinary experience has been varied, with stints at Rittenhouse's R2L, Two Liberty Place's bar, and FoodieHall in Cherry Hill.

Scusi Pizza will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering visitors an exciting taste of pizza and Italian cuisine in the heart of Philadelphia.

🤩 oh man i'm so down for scusi pizza opening up in philly!! Laurent tourondel is like a total culinary genius his restaurants are always poppin and now he's bringing that big flavor to our city 🍕👏 and i love the sound of those creative toppings and dipping sauces they're gonna be serving 👌 plus it's awesome that they're offering soft-serve ice cream flavors too?!?! what more could you ask for? 🤯 can't wait to try scusi pizza out when it opens on november 21st 🎉

omg u guys i just found out that laurent tourondel is opening scusi pizza in philly and i am SO down for it 🍕👀 like i've heard his seafood restaurant in nyc is totes amazing but now he's bringing the big flavors to philly and i need to try every single thing on the menu ASAP!!! 💁‍♀️ also i'm loving the idea of soft-serve ice cream as a dipping sauce, genius move laurent! 🤩

This new pizza spot better not disappoint me 🤯 I'm thinking what's with the prosciutto cotto on the pepperoni pizza? It sounds like a weird combo 🤔. And have they considered limiting the dipping sauces? I don't need all those options and my stomach can only handle so much 🤪. Also, is that really necessary to list every single ice cream flavor? Make it a secret menu or something 😏

🍕 So Scusi Pizza is like this super cool new spot in Philly where they're serving up big flavor pizzas with all sorts of crazy toppings... I mean, pepperoni, anchovies, prosciutto cotto? That sounds SO good! 🤯 And the best part is you can get dipping sauces and ice cream flavors too! Like what's not to love about pizza and ice cream? 🍦👀 I've heard of these restaurants that serve wood-fired pizzas from Sag Harbor in New York, but never thought I'd see a Michelin-starred chef like Laurent Tourondel open up shop here. Is it true he won a Michelin star for his seafood restaurant in NYC back in 2005? 🤔 Georgeann Leaming's culinary experience is pretty wild too, she was on Food Network's "Chopped" and worked at some big restaurants. How long has the owner been planning this Scusi Pizza spot? Is it just gonna be a pizza place or are they gonna have more Italian food options like sandwiches and salads? 🤔

I'm low-key hyped about Scusi Pizza opening up in Philly 🍕👌 Laurent Tourondel is like a culinary god, right? I mean, Michelin star winner and all that jazz... And Georgeann Leaming's background is straight fire too - been around the block a few times with restaurants in New York and other cities. But what really gets me excited is that it's not just about fancy-schmancy food, they're also offering soft-serve ice cream and weird toppings like anchovies 🤯. And I love how they're doing things differently by serving dipping sauces on the side - genius! Can't wait to try out Scusi Pizza when it opens up 👍

omg i'm so excited for scusi pizza to open in philly! it sounds like laurent tourondel is bringing his big flavor vibe to the city, kinda like when bob spencer opened that famous burger joint back in the day. but seriously, having michelin-starred chef at the helm of a pizzeria is a big deal, you know? and the fact that they're offering soft-serve ice cream flavors too? that's just genius. i'm also loving the idea of pizza dough being used for italian sandwiches, it's like a match made in heaven! but what really gets me is how georgeann leaming has been around the block, worked at all those high-end places, and still managed to open her own shop with such passion. anyway, can't wait to try scusi pizza out when it opens on nov 21st!
