China is bearing down on Taiwan – enabled by Trump's weakness and vacillation | Simon Tisdall

US Weakening on Taiwan Sparks China's Aggressive Expansionism

The United States' apparent indifference to China's aggressive actions towards Taiwan has emboldened Beijing, which now sees an opportunity to crush the island's democracy and sovereignty. This is not a new phenomenon – China has long resented Taiwan's de facto independence and the US support that comes with it.

China's latest move in this saga is a textbook example of "coercion," where Beijing applies economic pressure, espionage, cyber-sabotage, and mass surveillance to isolate Taiwan and undermine its government. The ultimate goal is to create a sense of Chinese power overwhelming Taiwan, making the US believe that intervention would be too costly, and convincing Taiwanese citizens that their best option is to give up without a fight.

The problem lies with US President Donald Trump's inaction on this issue. Despite promises to provide military support to Taiwan, he has instead retreated into a series of phone calls and tweets that only serve to reassure Xi Jinping, China's leader. His apparent willingness to prioritize trade deals over national security is a betrayal of Taiwan's interests.

This pattern of behavior has set a worrying precedent for other nations facing Chinese aggression. Ukraine, with its own struggles against Russian forces, can already see the devastating consequences of Trump's approach. In an echo of Czechoslovakia in 1938, where appeasement only emboldened Hitler's expansionism, history has proven that compromising with aggression leads to war and enslavement.

As Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te warned, this is not a crisis to be taken lightly – it is an existential threat. If China succeeds in crushing Taiwan's democracy, the consequences will be catastrophic for regional stability and global security.

It remains to be seen whether anyone in Washington will heed this warning before it's too late. One thing is certain: China is moving fast on Taiwan, and if Trump continues his current course of action – or worse, abandons Taiwan altogether – the consequences will be disastrous.

😬 I'm getting really worried about this situation with China and Taiwan 🤯. I mean, isn't it kind of weird that the US is just kinda sitting on their hands while China does all these aggressive things? Like, shouldn't they be doing something to help out their friend Taiwan or something? 🤔

And what's up with Trump's approach, right? Just phone calls and tweets, like that's gonna cut it? 😂 I don't get why he can't just be more direct and tell China to knock it off. It's not like they're a superpower or anything.

This situation is kinda crazy because if Taiwan gives in, what happens then? 🤯 Do we just accept that China owns the whole place now? That doesn't seem right to me 😂

Can someone please explain this stuff to me? I'm totally lost 🙅‍♂️. And what's gonna happen next? Are we gonna see some kind of war or something? 😬

omg I just saw this thread pop up days after it was supposed to be relevant lol. anyway, US indifference towards China's Taiwan situation is super concerning - like, what's going on? can't they see how aggressive China is getting?! 🙄 and Trump's inaction is especially annoying - i mean, we all know he's more about the benjamins than actual national security 💸. this whole thing is just a recipe for disaster if you ask me...

I'm not buying the US's "we're not worried" vibe 🙄... it's always about their own interests when it comes to trade deals vs national security. I mean, who needs Taiwan's freedom and democracy anyway? It's just a pawn in China's game of global expansion. The fact that Trump is more concerned with his own legacy than actual US foreign policy is super worrying 🤯... like what happens when there's an actual war and he's not around to tweet about it? 🚫 Taiwan should be grateful they have someone as "strong" as Lai Ching-te at the helm, but let's be real, that's just a temporary solution 🕰️... China will keep pushing until someone takes action, and when that happens, it'll be too late 😬

I'm getting really worried about this whole situation with China and Taiwan 🤕. It feels like the US is just sitting back and letting China do its thing, which isn't a good look at all. I mean, what's going on? We're supposed to be one of the biggest supporters of democracy and freedom in the world, but instead we're not doing much about it.

I get that trade deals are important, but is it really worth risking the stability of Taiwan just for some economic gain? 🤔 It seems like a lot of people in Washington are more concerned with making deals than with standing up for what's right. I don't think this is going to end well if we keep going down this path.

And what about Ukraine, huh? They're already dealing with Russian aggression and it's not looking good for them 🌪️. We should be supporting our allies instead of just talking about it on Twitter. This whole situation just feels really dire 😬.

omg u guys china is literally getting away with murder over taiwan i mean we all know trump is clueless but come on, is it too much to ask for a lil support from the US lol china's been trying to crush taiwan's democracy 4eva and now they think they can just keep doing it bc nobody's gonna stop them?? that would be SO wrong tbh

idk how many times we gotta repeat this 🤯 china's been trying to take down taiwan for ages but us just keep giving em space 🙄 like trump said no military support and now xi jinping is just chillin, waiting for us to backpedal 😒 meanwhile taiwan's gotta deal with all the espionage and cyber attacks on their own 🤖 it's not just about taiwan tho, this sets a bad precedent for other countries 🌎 ukraine already saw how it went down in 1938 so yeah, history repeats itself 📚 lai ching-te warned us but did anyone listen? 🙄 currently china has like 200+ military bases around the world and is investing in tech to take over the whole globe 🤖🚀 stats show that 9 out of 10 companies don't make it past year 1 📊

I'm so confused about this whole situation with Taiwan 🤯. I mean, China's being super aggressive and it's like, totally understandable that they're upset about Taiwan's independence... but at the same time, what's wrong with the US just supporting its ally? 🤔 And Trump's handling of it is just... wow. One minute he's all in, the next he's like "meh" and tweets some random thing 😒. It's like, can't we just have a clear plan or something? 🙄

And what about the history lesson here? I mean, sure, appeasing aggression is never good... but can't we just have a nuanced conversation about how to handle this without jumping to conclusions? 🤷‍♀️ Like, maybe there's some middle ground that no one's considering? 🤔

But on the other hand... China is literally trying to crush Taiwan and it's like, super serious business. 😬 If we don't do something, who will? 💪 So, yeah, I guess we need to step up our game... but how?! 🤯

omg 🤯 china is getting crazy!!! they think they can just bully taiwan and the us wont do anything about it? like, what's next? russia gonna start threatening australia too? 😳 this is so not cool, trump needs to step up his game and show china who's boss. or worse, just apologize for the us being a freeloader 🤷‍♂️ anyway, taiwan needs our support now more than ever. fingers crossed they can stay safe 💪

im so worried about taiwan, china's been quiet for a sec but i'm sure they're still cooking up something 🤯 this trump thingy is super concerning, like, what's going on with that guy? 🤔 is usa really just gonna sit back and let china do whatever it wants to taiwan? i get why taiwan's got some issues with china but come on, usa should be doing more to help them out 👊 at least something!

😕 I'm really worried about what's happening with Taiwan right now... It feels like no one is taking this seriously enough 🤕. The US seems to be just standing by while China's being super aggressive and it's not okay 💔. I know we all want peace, but you can't just let people walk all over others without speaking up 🗣️. Taiwan deserves our support and protection ⚔️. It's like, what would we do if someone was doing the same thing to us? 😤 We'd stand up for ourselves, right? So why aren't they standing up for Taiwan? 🤷‍♀️ It's just not right...

I think the US is just playing with fire here 🚨. I mean, China's been making moves for years and this is the response? "Oh, don't worry, we've got your back, but only if you sign that trade deal" 😒. It's like they're trying to negotiate with a bully. Taiwan's already feeling the squeeze and now they're being told to just chill 🤷‍♀️.

It's not just about Taiwan, it's about setting a precedent for other countries. What happens when China comes after someone else? Are we supposed to just sit back and watch? 🤔 The US needs to take this seriously and not just talk the talk. They need to be willing to back up their words with action 💪.

I'm worried that if Trump keeps going down this path, it'll be too late for Taiwan and maybe even others who are facing Chinese aggression. We don't want to see a repeat of history here 📚. The US needs to step up its game and show China that they're not just going to roll over on this one 😡.

🚨 The US needs to step up its game when it comes to dealing with China's aggressive behavior towards Taiwan. I mean, think about it - they're basically just sitting back and letting China bully them around 🤷‍♂️. Trump's approach is all about "tweeting" threats rather than taking concrete action 💬. Newsflash: words aren't enough when it comes to national security! We need more substance over soundbites 📢. Taiwan deserves better, and the world should be watching as this situation escalates 🔥. It's time for the US to take a firm stance and show China that they won't be pushed around 💪. Anything less is just appeasement, and we all know how that ends 😒.

omg dont think china is just gonna get away with this 😱 they're already pushing boundaries with japan and south korea like what's next?! 🤯 and trumps response is literally making it easier for xi to do whatever he wants 🙄 all that backchanneling and tweeting is just sending a huge "we'll let you do as u please" message 📣 meanwhile taiwan's population is getting more scared by the day 😟 i hope some sensible ppl in washington start taking this seriously before its too late 💪

Umm yeah so like I was reading this article about the US not doing enough for Taiwan and it's just super concerning 🤔. I mean China's been trying to crush Taiwan's democracy for ages and now they're just getting more aggressive by the day. And what really gets my goat is that Trump's all like "oh, I'm gonna do something" but then he just tweets about it and does nothing 📱. Like, come on dude, prioritize Taiwan over those trade deals with China already! It's not like we haven't seen this before, history has shown us that giving in to aggression only makes things worse 💔. We need to be all like "hey, nope, we're not gonna let you do that" and support Taiwan for real 🤝. Anything less is just letting China get away with it, which would be super bad for everyone 🌎
