Chrissie Hynde: 'I pierced Johnny Rotten's ear in a toilet with an earring and a bar of soap'

Chrissie Hynde, legendary lead singer of The Pretenders, reminisces about her past and shares some anecdotes that offer a glimpse into her life as a punk rock icon.

The film Grace of My Heart, released in 1996, influenced Chrissie's decision to record an album of duets. However, she initially thought of other artists, like Low and Cass McCombs, but ultimately ended up recording with Rufus Wainwright, whom she had met after a conversation with his husband.

Chrissie has covered Morrissey's Every Day Is Like Sunday in the past and is featured on Duets Special. She reveals that her conversations with Morrissey rarely reach a philosophical or moral impasse, as they often focus on their shared vegetarianism and music. The two musicians have remained close friends over the years.

The Pretenders' debut album turned 45 this year, prompting Chrissie to reflect on how much was in the works before she met Pete Farndon, Jimmy Honeyman-Scott, and Martin Chambers, her band members at the time. She remembers meeting Benji Lysaght, who produced Duets Special, after he approached her about James Honeyman-Scott's guitar playing.

Chrissie also shares that The Pretenders' 2000 Miles is back on airwaves for Christmas, a festive song she wrote a year after Jimmy Honeyman-Scott's death. She regrets not being able to purchase the guitar rental company would sell her the instrument she had fallen in love with.

Chrissie has appeared in an episode of Friends and recalls that Warners asked her to contribute a song for the show, but she didn't realize it was going to be featured prominently until after filming took place. She's also shared that meeting Johnny Rotten was a pivotal moment, as he invited her to join the Pistols. However, Chrissie doesn't think she would have made it work with either Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious.

Chrissie maintains friendships with some punk scene women, such as Jordan and Vivienne Westwood's associate, Gaye Advert, whom she admired for her beauty and boldness.

man i feel so bad for chrissie hynde that she never got to buy the guitar that had captured her heart all these years... πŸŽΈπŸ’” it's like music has a way of connecting us with things that we just can't have, you know? anyway, it's cool to see her reminiscing about old times and sharing some behind-the-scenes stories... i mean who wouldn't want to hang out with morrissey, right? πŸ˜‰ but seriously, chrissie's been making music for like forever, and she still manages to keep it real and authentic... that's something we can all learn from πŸ™

I'm loving this Chrissie Hynde interview πŸ’– She's so down to earth about her past and has some really cool stories about meeting Morrissey 😊 I've always been a fan of The Pretenders, their music is just timeless. It's awesome that she's remained friends with people from the punk scene over the years πŸ‘« Chrissie's thoughts on not being able to get the guitar for 2000 Miles are so relatable 🎸 And it's great to see her talking about how much music influenced her life, even if some of those influences didn't quite work out πŸ˜‚

I'm loving Chrissie Hynde's nostalgic vibes on this one! πŸ™Œ The way she reminisces about recording Duets Special with Rufus Wainwright is so relatable - who hasn't had those conversations where you're like, "oh, we should totally collaborate"? πŸ’¬ And can we talk about how cool it is that Morrissey and Chrissie are BFFs over shared values? Their vegetarianism vibes are everything! πŸ₯— I'm also dying to know more about the behind-the-scenes of The Pretenders' 2000 Miles - it's like, what was going through Chrissie's mind when she wrote that song after Jimmy Honeyman-Scott's passing? πŸ’” All these stories are giving me major 90s nostalgia and a deep respect for Chrissie Hynde's legendary status! 😎

I think Chrissie Hynde's stories are so fascinating 🀩. She had some really interesting encounters in the past, like meeting Johnny Rotten, which could've been a game-changer, but I'm not sure it would've worked out either way πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. It's cool that she's remained friends with people from the punk scene, though - Jordan and Gaye Advert are both legends in their own right πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. And can we talk about how awesome her music is? The Pretenders' 2000 Miles is such a great Christmas song, and it's amazing how much of her life story has influenced her art 🎸. Anyway, I love that she's been able to find common ground with people like Morrissey over shared interests - it's refreshing in the music industry πŸ€—.

I'm also feeling nostalgic after reading about The Pretenders' debut album turning 45 this year πŸ“†. Chrissie's story about how much was in the works before she met her band members is so fascinating! And I love that '2000 Miles' is back on airwaves for Christmas - it's such a beautiful song πŸŽ„πŸ’•.

It's also awesome to see Chrissie's behind-the-scenes stories, like when Warners asked her to contribute a song for Friends and she didn't realize it was going to be featured prominently until after filming took place πŸ“ΊπŸŽΆ. And meeting Johnny Rotten was definitely a pivotal moment in her life - but I'm glad she doesn't think she would have made it work with him or Sid Vicious πŸ˜‚.

Chrissie's dedication to her friendships and the punk scene is so admirable - she's still close with Jordan, Gaye Advert, and Vivienne Westwood's associate, and that's amazing πŸ’•. She's a true icon and inspiration to many musicians out there!

I feel bad for Chrissie that she couldn't get the guitar 🎸. I mean, it was a special one to her, and you can tell how much it meant when she talks about it πŸ˜”. Also, who knew Rufus Wainwright was her duet partner? Rufus is so talented! πŸ’•

I'm not surprised Chrissie didn't join the Pistols with Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I mean, that's a crazy scene to get into! But it's cool she has those friendships with women from the punk scene πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ. Gaye Advert is definitely a legend!

I love how Chrissie is still close friends with Morrissey 🀝. They're just like two peas in a pod, aren't they? 😊 And it's awesome that The Pretenders' 2000 Miles is getting airplay again for Christmas πŸŽ„. That song gives me all the feels!

I wonder what would've happened if Chrissie had met Benji Lysaght sooner πŸ€”. Maybe she wouldn't have recorded Duets Special? Either way, it's been a fascinating peek into Chrissie's life πŸ“š.

I just love reading about Chrissie Hynde's stories πŸ™Œ. She's like a time capsule of the 80s punk rock era. I can only imagine how surreal it must've been to meet some of those legends, like Johnny Rotten 😲. It's amazing how music has a way of bringing people together, and Chrissie's friendships with Morrissey and Gaye Advert are a testament to that ❀️. And speaking of Duets Special, I'm intrigued by the story behind Rufus Wainwright becoming her duet partner 🎢. You know, it's funny how life works out – she initially thought of other artists, but ultimately ended up with someone who shared similar musical tastes πŸ€—. Anyway, I think it's great that The Pretenders' debut album is still making waves after all these years 🎡.

omg can u believe chrissie hynde is still killing the game at 75 🀩 i'm loving all these throwbacks to her time in punk rock and friends πŸ€— her chemistry with rufus wainwright on duets special is giving me life πŸ’– and who else but christie would share a personal story about jordan from the slits πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ anyway just rewatching "friends" for the millionth time lol πŸ˜‚

Chrissie Hynde is a total legend 🀩! I love how she still vibes with Morrissey like they're old buddies 🀝. It's so cool that their shared veggie values bring them together. And can you believe The Pretenders' debut album is 45? Time flies when you're making music that lasts πŸ’«. I'm also loving the retro feel of "2000 Miles" getting a Christmas re-release - it's like Chrissie's song is wrapped up in a present just for us 🎁. But what I find really fascinating is how she looks back on her collaborations with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious... like, whoa, that's some intense history πŸ’₯. Anyway, it's clear Chrissie has always stayed true to herself (and her music) throughout the years, and that's something we can all respect πŸ™.
