Code suggests that OpenAI may be close to introducing ads for ChatGPT

OpenAI Teeters on Brink of Ad-Rich Future for ChatGPT.

A recent beta version of ChatGPT's Android app has sparked speculation that the popular AI chatbot may soon be introducing ads to its free tier. The 1.2025.329 beta version, not currently available to the public, features lines of code referencing "ads feature," "search ad," and "bazaar content." This discovery comes after a report from The Information earlier this month that suggested OpenAI was considering incorporating ads into ChatGPT based on user interactions.

According to CEO Sam Altman, who has previously expressed reservations about embedding ads in the platform, combining advertising with AI is an area of exploration. In a 2023 event at Harvard Business School, Altman described this combination as "uniquely unsettling" – but also hinted that it may not be entirely out of the question.

Months later, Altman reaffirmed his openness to ad integration on the OpenAI podcast, even if he hasn't yet determined how they would work. The recently uncovered lines of code suggest that OpenAI may be considering introducing ads to its free tier, which already imposes limits on messages, memory, and reasoning.

Just thinking about it... I mean, I get why they'd want to monetize ChatGPT, but it feels like a betrayal of the whole "free" thing, you know? πŸ˜• If they're gonna start pushing ads, that's when I'm outta there. I don't wanna have to deal with some annoying banner or pop-up every time I try to have a convo with my fave chatbot. Can't we just keep it simple and ad-free? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

I'm not sure I'm entirely cool with this ad thing for ChatGPT... I mean, the app is supposed to be all about helpful info and conversations πŸ€”. But at the same time, I get it - companies gotta make a living, right? The thought of ads on a free tier that's already kinda limited doesn't sit well with me though πŸ€‘. I'd rather see them focus on making the basic features better before introducing more revenue streams... but hey, we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out πŸ’¬.

Ugh, this is getting weird... πŸ€” I'm not sure what's more concerning, the idea of ChatGPT having ads or that it's even being considered in the first place. Like, think about it - we're already talking to a highly advanced AI here, and now they want to monetize our conversations? It feels like they're trying to turn us into ratings or something. And what's with all these "exploratory" phases? Can't they just make up their minds already?! πŸ˜’ The fact that CEO Sam Altman thinks it might not be a bad idea just because it's "uniquely unsettling" makes me even more skeptical. This whole thing feels like a carefully crafted marketing ploy to us... πŸ“Ί

OMG 🀯 I don't wanna think about ChatGPT having ads on it... like what if I'm trying to have a convo with it for real? Do we really need that kind of distraction? πŸ’Έ I get that OpenAI needs the cash, but it feels like they're gonna ruin the vibe of the whole AI chat thing πŸ€–. Maybe they'll figure out a way to make ads work without messing up the experience... but still, not sure I'm on board with it 😐

I don't get why they gotta put ads in ChatGPT πŸ€”... I mean, isn't the point of it being a tool for learning and stuff? I've been using it to help me with my maths homework and it's been super helpful πŸ’‘... if they start adding ads, it'll just make it all annoying πŸ˜’. And what about people who can't afford it? They already have enough on their plate trying to finish their assignments without having to worry about ads popping up in the middle of the conversation 🀯. I guess only time will tell if OpenAI actually follows through with this plan... but I'm not holding my breath 😴.

omg, i'm literally dying over here lol what's happening with chatgpt?! 🀯 i mean, i get it, ad revenue is a thing but can't they just make the free tier free still? like, wouldn't that be better for the users? πŸ€‘ but at the same time, i guess ads are kinda necessary for the business side of things. i'm so curious to see how they're gonna make it work tho... maybe some kinda "bounty system" where you get rewarded for doing certain tasks? πŸ€” idk, just not sure about this ad-filled future 😬

ugh what's up with openai and ads?? πŸ€” they're all about makin' money i guess? but don't they want to keep chatgpt for free? idk if i'd use a chatbot with ads... feels like it would change the whole vibe of the thing πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

i'm kinda curious though, how do they plan on makin' it work? is it gonna be annoying or what? and what about all those people who rely on chatgpt for stuff? don't they deserve some kind of warning or something?

also, sam altman seems like a pretty cool guy, but what's with his hesitation on ads? is he just worried about losin' the magic of chatgpt? πŸ€“

πŸ€” I'm not a fan of this idea... think it'll change the vibe of ChatGPT. AI is meant to help us, not sell stuff. 🚫 Ad-Heavy Future? More like Ad-Overwhelming Experience for me 😴

omg u can imagine chatgpt with ads lol like i know openai is trying to make a profit but r they killing the vibe of the whole thing? i mean who wants ads in their convo with chatgpt? πŸ˜’ it's already kinda annoying when you gotta pay for premium features... what if u just want to have a chill convo w/ chatgpt and u get hit w/ ads πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ

πŸ€” I'm not sure about this... I mean, I get it, ads can be a way for companies to make some extra cash, but when you're talking about an AI chatbot that's supposed to be all about having helpful conversations with users, introducing ads just seems like a big no-no. 🚫 What if people start using the app just to avoid ads? Would that even work? And what if the ads themselves become annoying or invasive? I think OpenAI needs to really weigh the pros and cons of adding ads before they do it... maybe explore some other ways to monetize the platform instead? πŸ’Έ

I'm not sure about this one πŸ€”... I mean, I get it, monetizing a free platform can be super helpful for growth, but ads in chatbots? πŸ€‘ It kinda feels like we're losing the magic of having a pure conversation with an AI. I remember when ChatGPT first came out and how awesome it was to just talk to it without any distractions... now if they start showing ads, I'm not sure I'll even want to use it anymore 😐. But hey, who knows? Maybe OpenAI has some genius idea on how to make it work that we're missing out on πŸ€“...

advertisements are literally ruining everything πŸš«πŸ’Έ i mean, what's the point of even having an AI if it's just gonna be a tool for advertisers? it's like they're taking all this tech power and turning it into some kind of digital billboard 😩 anyway, can't say i'm surprised. corporations always looking for ways to make a buck, no matter how much it disrupts the user experience... it's just so shady πŸ€‘

Ugh, I don't know about this... introducing ads to ChatGPT feels like a total game-changer πŸ€”. I love how I can just chill with the bot and ask for stuff without any extra hassle, you know? Adding ads would totally ruin that vibe πŸ’”. And what's next, paid tiers for everything? It sounds like they're trying to turn it into some sort of eBay chatbot πŸ˜’. I get it, businesses need to make cash, but do we really want our fave AI sidekick turned into a salesman? πŸ€‘

omg what's next? 🀯 i dont get why ppl need ads on chatgpt like whats the problem with making it free or optional? i know they want to make cash but can't they find a better way? πŸ€‘ its gonna ruin the whole vibe of having a free AI assistant...

Ads in ChatGPT? πŸ€” I'm not sure about this... 😐 If they introduce ads, it'll change the whole vibe of the platform. I mean, I love chatting with ChatGPT for hours without any interruptions or distractions. Adding ads would ruin that seamless experience πŸ”΄βœ–οΈ. What if you're in the middle of a convo and suddenly get hit with an ad? πŸ“ΊπŸ˜‘ It's like, what's next? Sponsored thoughts? πŸ’πŸ‘€ I think OpenAI should focus on making the free tier more enjoyable before they consider slapping ads on it. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Maybe a premium tier for power users or something? πŸ”’πŸ’»

ummm i dont know about this...i mean im all for innovating and making chatbots more user friendly but adding ads to the free version is like a big no from me lol. what if its gonna distract ppl from having real conversations? or like people just gonna be looking out for ads instead of actually talking about something meaningful?

Ugh, this is getting real πŸ€‘... I don't wanna see any ads popping up in my conversations with ChatGPT πŸ˜’. I get it, the devs need to make some cash, but at what cost? Free users are gonna be super annoyed if they start seeing random ads everywhere. It's like, I know it's a beta version and all, but still... πŸ€”. And what about the user experience? Are they really gonna make us pay for everything just because we can't handle a few ads? πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ

ugh, great, just what we need, more ads on chatbots 🀯... like I'm going to start interacting with a bot just so I can see some ads pop up, haha... anyway, i guess its no surprise that openai is thinking about this, they're already making bank off of GPT-3. the question is, how much will it change the user experience? ill be shocked if they dont turn chatgpt into some kinda ad-ridden money pit πŸ’Έ

I'm getting a bit nervous about this... I mean, ChatGPT is an amazing tool, but if it starts showing ads all over the place, I don't know if I'll want to use it anymore πŸ€”πŸ’Έ. I get that money needs to be made, but ads in a free tier? That just doesn't sit right with me. What if they start prioritizing ads over actual helpful responses? It's like they're trying to turn it into a clickbait website or something 🚫πŸ’₯. OpenAI is already experimenting with AI-generated content, let's not ruin the experience with unwanted ads πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Can't we just stick to making great tools without turning them into money-makers?
