Community printmaking shop is raising money for larger space in West Philly

West Philly Printmaking Studio Counts on Community for New Home.

The Soapbox, a beloved local printmaking shop in West Philadelphia, is turning to its community for help. The non-profit studio has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support the move into a larger space at 4542 Baltimore Avenue, with a goal of raising $50,000 by spring.

Currently located at 47th Street and Kingsessing Avenue, the Soapbox serves local artists who use the shop's resources to create books, zines, and other publications. Its new home will provide more than double the space it currently occupies, allowing for increased accessibility and visibility.

The studio offers access to cutting-edge tools like letterpress, risograph, book presses, etching presses, computer labs, and screen printing equipment – all available on a monthly fee basis. It also boasts a vast library of over 3,500 zines and artist books, as well as workshops and private lessons for those who want to learn.

Community members have shown their support in the past with similar initiatives, such as the West Philly Tool Library, which successfully relocated across the Schuylkill River last fall. As of Monday, The Soapbox campaign has raised less than $1,000 from over 30 contributors.

The new location boasts two entrances meeting ADA standards for accessibility and better visibility due to its street-level space and garage door that opens directly onto the sidewalk.

Ugh, crowdfunding campaigns are just so... old school πŸ€ͺ. Can't we just use Venmo or something already? πŸ˜‚ Anyway, I love The Soapbox and all the amazing things they do for artists in West Philly, but have you seen those tiny spaces they're currently in? It's like a college dorm room for grown-ups! πŸ πŸ“š They really need that new space to spread their wings (or should I say, print their books?) and make even more art happen. Community support is always cool, but let's be real, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned Kickstarter campaign? πŸ’ΈπŸ’₯ Still, it's great to see artists supporting each other... now if they could just get some decent Wi-Fi in that new space, I'd be one happy printmaking nerd! πŸ“ŠπŸ‘

I'm so done with these community fundraising campaigns πŸ™„. It's always the same story – some non-profit or artist studio needs help, so they just throw up a crowdfunding page on the internet and wait for people to donate whatever they feel like giving πŸ’Έ. I mean, where's the incentive to actually do the work yourself if someone else is just going to take care of everything? And $50k is just a drop in the bucket for a real business that needs funding – when are these studios ever going to have a solid budget plan or anything like that? πŸ€”

I'm all for community-driven initiatives like this! 🀝 It's awesome to see The Soapbox counting on its local supporters to help fund their new home. I mean, we've seen it work out well before with places like the West Philly Tool Library, so fingers crossed they hit that $50k goal! πŸ’Έ It's not just about the space itself, but also the accessibility and visibility that comes with it – two entrances meeting ADA standards is a huge plus for inclusivity. Plus, the fact that they're offering affordable access to those tools on a monthly fee basis means we can expect some amazing zines and books to come out of this. Let's get behind The Soapbox and help them take their printmaking skills to the next level! 🎨πŸ’₯

the soapbox is just gonna be a fancy art studio with elitist artists making zines for each other 🀒. it's all about who you know, not what's good for the community. they're just asking for more money to maintain their status quo of being a exclusive resource for rich artists.

i mean, have you seen the state of west philly lately? we need affordable housing and education, not fancy art studios. $50k is a drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing real issues in this city πŸ€‘

omg can't believe the soapbox is in need of a new home 🀯 i mean we have the best artists in west philly and it's only fair they get the resources they deserve πŸ’• i've had so much fun at their current spot making zines and collabs with other artists, now imagine doubling that space πŸ“ˆ hopefully the community comes together to support them this time around, like those awesome people who made the west philly tool library happen last year 🀝 fingers crossed for that $50k goal πŸ’Έ

omg can u believe they're trying to raise like 50k just to get a bigger space i feel bad for them cuz this stuff is so expensive but at the same time its for a good cause lol imagine having even more zines to check out in their library its like a dream come true for artists on a budget anyway, fingers crossed for em they gotta have a community that cares about arts n culture like west philly does

I'm loving this initiative, but isn't it weird that they need our help? I mean, they've been around for a while and seem to have done alright without raising funds before πŸ€”. But hey, more space is always better, right? I do hope they reach their goal, 'cause the zines at The Soapbox are literally my favorite thing to browse through 😍. And it's awesome that they're prioritizing accessibility - that garage door opening up onto the sidewalk is such a thoughtful touch πŸšͺ. Can't wait to see how this all plays out and what kind of projects come out of their new space πŸ’‘!

im not sure about this crowdfunding thing, seems like a pretty standard ask... πŸ€” i mean, community support is cool and all, but $50k for 30 contributors raising less than $1k in a month? sounds like a pretty low bar. also, what's the timeline looking like here? will they actually find a better space with this amount of money?

omg how cool is this? 🀩 a printmaking studio in west philly needs a new home and it's up to the community to help fund it! $50k goal is super reasonable considering what they'll get in return, more space for ppl to create and learn πŸ“šπŸ’‘ the fact that they're gonna have 2 entrances meeting ada standards for accessibility is amazing, it's all about inclusivity 🌈 gotta support local initiatives like this! πŸ‘

I'm not surprised they're having trouble raising funds πŸ€‘. Have you seen the state of Philly's arts scene lately? It's like everyone's trying to start their own project, but nobody has the cash to back it up πŸ’Έ. I mean, who doesn't love a good zine, right? πŸ€” But at what cost? The Soapbox needs that 50k ASAP or it'll just be another forgotten studio in West Philly 😐. On the bright side, their new location is pretty sweet – two entrances and all that jazz πŸšͺ. Maybe they should've thought of that before they got too cozy in their current spot πŸ‘€

OMG u guys I got a tea on this 🍡 The Soapbox is literally counting on us! They're trying to raise $50k by spring which is a big ask but if they get it done it'll be awesome πŸ’ͺ think about all the artists who wanna make zines and books but can't afford the space right now, this will be a game changer πŸŽ‰ Plus it's West Philly so we gotta support our own! They already have an amazing collection of 3k+ zines lol that's some serious prep work done. Fingers crossed they hit their goal and get those doors open soon 🀞

I'm so stoked about this community-driven project 🀩. The Soapbox is like a heartbeat in West Philly, providing an amazing resource for local artists to express themselves. It's awesome they're counting on their supporters to help fund the new space - it's all about collaboration and keeping the creative vibe alive πŸ’‘. The goal of $50k seems doable, but I'm hoping they get even more love from the community! 🀞 A bigger space means more people can access the studio's sick tools and resources... like, who wouldn't want to get their hands on that letterpress? 😍

omg I'm getting those old vibes from the West Philly Tool Library move last year πŸ€— it's amazing how community comes together to support local businesses like The Soapbox, I mean they're already doing a lot with limited resources, can you imagine what they'll be able to do with more space? πŸŽ¨πŸ’Ό 3,500 zines and artist books in the library is insane, I remember digging through thrift stores for art supplies back when I was in high school it's like this studio is a treasure trove... anyway, $50k seems like a stretch but fingers crossed they hit their goal 🀞

omg, i'm so down with this! 🀩 a printmaking studio in west philly is like my dream come true 😍 they're offering so many cool tools and resources for artists to make their own zines and books πŸ“šπŸ–ŒοΈ it's awesome that they're turning to the community for help 🀝 we should all support this initiative, especially since it's a non-profit! πŸ’•

i love that the new space is like double the size of their current spot 🏠πŸ’₯ it'll be way more accessible and visible, which is perfect for an art studio 🌟 they're also getting some awesome upgrades, like street-level space and better accessibility features πŸ‘

but, um, $50k seems kinda steep πŸ’Έ i mean, i get that they need it to make this happen, but still πŸ€” can't we just chip in a bit more? πŸ€‘ anyway, let's all show our support and keep an eye on that campaign πŸ“ˆπŸ’ͺ

OMG u guys I'm literally DYING to support this cause!!! 🀯 The Soapbox is like, my fave spot in Philly where I can just chill and make zines all day. They have the best equipment and staff are always so helpful. If they move to that new space it's gonna be a GAME CHANGER for artists in West Philly! We need more spaces like this πŸ™ŒπŸ’– 4542 Baltimore Ave is already looking SO COOL btw πŸ‘ can't wait to see what The Soapbox has planned. We got this crew and I know we can hit that $50k goal πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised they're not gonna be in a spot with more foot traffic πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ, but I guess 4542 Baltimore Avenue is still pretty central 😊. The fact that they've got over 3,500 zines and books available for members to use is insane! πŸ“šπŸ‘ I think it's awesome that the community is stepping up to support them again 🀝. They're already getting a solid amount of cash πŸ’Έ, so hopefully they hit that $50k goal by spring 🌷. More space means more opportunities for artists, which is always a good thing πŸŽ¨πŸ’–

I'm kinda worried about this one... they're already at like $1000 after a month, and it's still a long way off from their goal πŸ€”. They need community love for a looong time. I mean, those resources are super cool and all, but have you seen the prices of rent around Philly lately? It's crazy! If they can make this work, though, it'll be awesome to see more art and creativity popping up in West Philly 🎨πŸ’ͺ

I'm so down with this community effort πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘! I remember back in the day when we used to have those super cool independent record stores like Tower Records 🎢, it's awesome to see people rallying around a local business like The Soapbox. They're basically a hub for artists and creatives, providing these amazing resources that help them make their projects come alive πŸ“šπŸ’». It's great to hear they've got a solid plan in place for the new space, especially with those extra entrances and garage door – it's gonna be so convenient! πŸšͺπŸ’¨ I'm hoping they hit that $50k goal by spring 🀞. Who knows, maybe we'll see some awesome zines and prints popping out of there soon πŸŽ¨πŸ“Έ!
