Britain's Conor Benn has been given the green light to challenge for the WBC welterweight world title, and he'll be given a chance to do so as Mario Barrios' mandatory challenger.
Benn, 29 years old, is now ranked number one contender by the WBC for the title that is currently held by Barrios, who was expected to face Ryan Garcia in the ring next February. Benn has been ranked fourth on the list but hasn't fought at the welterweight limit since his fight against Chris Eubank Jr in February 2022.
It would take a major upset if Benn goes through with his intended plan and ends up facing Barrios for the belt, as Garcia is also set to compete for the title against Barrios. Benn wants the winner of that bout early next year and believes that he has what it takes to seize the championship from Barrios.
