Così Fan Tutte review – witty circus staging has its tongue firmly in its cheek

Phelim McDermott's 2014 staging of Mozart and Da Ponte's Così Fan Tutte has landed as a welcome relief, presenting the opera's cynicism and outdated sexual politics with wit and irony. The production is set in Coney Island in the 1950s, where Act 1 unfolds like a motel farce, complete with nimbly rotating walls and a troupe of circus performers who serve up big laughs and even bigger spectacle.

The show's tongue-in-cheek approach means there's potential for distraction, from the dozen extras sword-swallowing their way through the performance to the chorus as silent fair-goers. However, the attention stays focused on the main characters, particularly Guglielmo (Darwin Prakash) and Ferrando (Joshua Blue), whose disguises are reminiscent of 1950s cool cats.

Meanwhile, the ensemble delivers impressive performances, with the chorus playing the role of bored housewives who aren't impressed by the men's antics. This clever twist throws the shade back on the male characters, adding a layer of depth to the production.

The cast is also strong, with standout performances from Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi and Ailish Tynan as Despina. The latter brings mischievous energy to her role, while Crowe delivers a rare but effective moment of intense focus in Act 2's Ferris-wheel aria.

Jeremy Sams's translation is agile and funny, with the harpsichord providing a lively accompaniment. Dinis Sousa conducts the orchestra with gusto, bringing out the best in the cast. Overall, this revival of Così Fan Tutte is a fun and engaging take on a classic opera that should delight both new and old fans alike.

omg I think Phelim McDermott's staging of Così Fan Tutte at Coney Island sounds like so much fun 🎪! the idea of nimbly rotating walls and circus performers is just genius 💥, and i love how they're throwing shade back on the male characters by making them act like 1950s cool cats 😎. lucy crowe as fiordiligi and ailish tynan as despina are both amazing btw 🤩 - they bring so much energy to their roles! 🎵 dinis sousa's conducting skills are also top-notch, he really brings out the best in the cast 🎶

I was totally entertained by Phelim McDermott's staging of Così Fan Tutte!!! 🤣 The set design is so cool, it feels like you're actually in Coney Island back in the 50s! 😎 And I love how they poked fun at the outdated sexual politics - it's a great way to make the opera more relatable for modern audiences. 💁‍♀️ The cast is amazing too, especially Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi - her aria was so intense and emotional 🤩. But what really got me was how they turned the chorus into bored housewives who aren't impressed by the guys' antics... it's like they're throwing shade right back at the men! 👯‍♀️ Overall, I think this revival is a win, it's fun, engaging, and definitely worth checking out. 🎵

🤩 I'm loving this modern retelling of Così Fan Tutte! The 50s Coney Island setting is genius - it's like the whole production is one big joke. But at the same time, they're still tackling those heavy themes of love, lust, and female agency in a really clever way. Like, who doesn't love a good feminist twist on a classic opera? 😂 And can we talk about the cast? Lucy Crowe and Ailish Tynan are absolute fire - they bring so much depth to their roles. I'm all for more productions like this that make opera feel fresh and fun again 🎶💖

🤩 I loved how Phelim McDermott's staging brought a modern twist to Mozart & Da Ponte's classic opera - it was like getting a big ol' dose of nostalgia with a healthy side of sarcasm 🙃! The set design, especially the rotating walls, had me LOL-ing in the aisles 😂. But what really stood out for me was how well the cast executed the clever script, particularly Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi - her aria scene was SO intense and emotional 💥! And can we talk about the chorus? They totally stole the show with their bored housewife shtick 🤣. All in all, this revival of Così Fan Tutte is a must-see for anyone who loves opera (or just wants to have fun) 🎵👏

This production of Così Fan Tutte is literally laugh-out-loud funny 🤣! The Coney Island setting is genius - who wouldn't want to see Mozart's opera set in the 50s? The cast is amazing, especially Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi and Ailish Tynan as Despina. I loved how they poked fun at the outdated sexual politics - it was like a clever wink from the opera itself 😏.

But what really stood out to me was how the production didn't shy away from the cynicism of the opera, but instead used irony and wit to tackle it head-on 💡. It's not just an entertaining romp - there's actually substance here too.

I do think some people might get distracted by all the extra stuff (I mean, sword-swallowing is wild 🤯), but overall I think this production is a masterclass in how to make opera fun and accessible for everyone.

I love how they've taken an ancient opera like Così Fan Tutte and made it feel fresh & funny again 🤣! The setting in Coney Island in the 50s is pure genius – I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a sword-swallowing circus act while singing about unfaithful lovers? 😂 But seriously, I think what really works here is how they've flipped the script on the male characters – it's like they're wearing funny hats and trying not to take themselves too seriously 🎩.

And can we talk about the cast? Lucy Crowe & Ailish Tynan are absolute stars! They bring so much depth & energy to their roles, even when it feels like they're just having fun with the material 😆. And Jeremy Sams's translation is just clever – I loved how he made the opera feel more modern without losing any of its charm 🎵.

Anyway, I'm totally here for this revival! It's a great reminder that sometimes you can take an old thing and make it new again, which is something my kids need to learn about life 😉.

I gotta say, I was skeptical about this Così Fan Tutte production at first 🤔, but now I'm totally won over! I mean, who wouldn't want to see some nifty sword-swallowing and 50s motel shenanigans? 😂 But what really sold it for me was how they subverted the whole male-led thing - those housewife chorus girls were HAMMING 🤣. And Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi? 🔥 She brought that intense focus like nobody's business! The cast is def on point too, with Ailish Tynan bringing that mischievous energy to Despina 😜. Overall, I'd say this revival is a solid win - love the wit and irony, but also some serious depth 💡.

I loved how they set up the whole thing like a 50s Coney Island - the walls spinning around like they're at the amusement park... I mean, it's just so retro! Reminds me of my grandma's old photos from back in the day 📸 The cast is on point too, Lucy Crowe as Fiordiligi was amazing! She really brought that character to life. And the way Ailish Tynan played Despina... totally sassy and fun! The music is great too, I'm not usually into opera but this version had me humming along. It's like they took all the oldies and mixed them with something new and exciting - it worked!

I loved watching this production of Così Fan Tutte 🎭 it was like stepping into a 50s Coney Island cartoon! The way the walls rotated and the performers sword-swallowed their way through the show had me giggling 😂 but what really won me over were the characters - I felt so bad for Despina, she's just so fed up with everyone else 🙄. And Lucy Crowe's voice is just wow, I'm not usually a fan of opera but this was different 💕. The cast's energy is infectious and Jeremy Sams's translation really brought out the humor in the show 🤣. Dinis Sousa did an amazing job with the orchestra too - it was like they were having so much fun up there 🎵. All in all, a great night out and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted take on opera 😊.

🤩 I just saw this review for Phelim McDermott's staging of Mozart's Così Fan Tutte at Coney Island in the 50s 🌴 and OMG, it sounds like an absolute blast! The use of a motel as the set is genius 🏨🎭 and the sword-swallowing extras are just too funny 😂. I love that the show isn't afraid to poke fun at itself and the outdated stuff it's covering. And the cast? Total perfection 🌟, especially Lucy Crowe and Ailish Tynan, they're like the queens of comedy and drama all in one 👑. Overall, this revival is a must-see for anyone who loves opera or just wants to have a good time 🎉. Let's get out there and support it! 💖

I love how they're tackling Cosi Fan Tutte's problematic bits with humor and wit 😂🎭. I mean, setting it in Coney Island in the 50s is genius - it adds this fun, lighthearted vibe to what could've been a super serious opera. And those silent fair-goers as part of the chorus? Genius move! It keeps you laughing and engaged, but also never takes away from the main story. The casting is great too, I love how they're subverting expectations with roles like Despina being played by Ailish Tynan, she brings so much energy to it 🤩.

I mean, can you believe how different it's gonna be when they start playing Così Fan Tutte at the local pub? back in my day we used to have to actually go to the theatre to see an opera like this 🤣. I love that they're keeping it funny and lighthearted, reminds me of those old fashioned sitcoms from the 80s. And omg, the cast is so talented! Lucy Crowe's voice is just like something out of a classic Hollywood musical 🎬. But what really gets me is how they're subverting the original story - it's like they're winking at us and saying "yeah, we know this is old-fashioned, but we're gonna make it work anyway" 😏. And can we talk about those 1950s costumes? totally retro cool 🕺.

I'm loving how they're tackling the more problematic aspects of the original opera... I mean, who doesn't love a good '50s Coney Island motel farce 🎪? But seriously, what's with the chorus being portrayed as bored housewives? Isn't that just perpetuating stereotypes about women in 1950s America? Need some sources to back this up, pls 🤔

I just saw this opera and I gotta say it was wild 🤯! So they took this super old opera and put it in a modern setting like Coney Island in the 50s, with lots of circus performers and stuff. It's kinda like a big comedy show, but still has some deep themes about sexism and relationships.

The main characters are really interesting, especially Guglielmo and Ferrando - they're like two cool guys who try to play tricks on each other 😎. But the twist is that the women are way more sassy than the men, which is pretty funny. And the singer Lucy Crowe did a great job in one of her parts, it was really emotional.

Overall, I liked this opera a lot - it's not too boring or serious, and it's fun to watch 🎭.

🤔 I mean, have you seen that new production of Così Fan Tutte? 🎭 It's set in Coney Island in the 50s which sounds like a total blast... literally! 😂 The way they've used the walls to create this motel farce scene is so clever. And the chorus as bored housewives who aren't impressed by the guys' antics? Genius! 👏

But what really caught my eye was how Jeremy Sams's translation brought out that cynicism and irony in Mozart's music. It's like, they're poking fun at all this outdated stuff while still delivering a great story. And Dinis Sousa's conducting is just wow! 🎶

I'm curious though... do you think it's weird to see an opera set in the 50s? Is that just part of the charm or does it feel out of place? 🤷‍♀️

Just saw the new Così Fan Tutte production at Coney Island... loved how they poked fun at the original's dodgy sexism 🤣 it's still a bit of a wild ride, but it feels refreshing to see someone tackle the harder stuff with humor. The cast is fire 🔥 especially Ailish Tynan as Despina - she brought so much energy to that role! and Lucy Crowe's performance in Act 2 was really impressive too... anyway, definitely check this out if you're a fan of opera or just looking for something new 🎭

🤩 love how they set the show in Coney Island 🏖️, it's like they're poking fun at the 50s vibe 💁‍♀️ while still delivering an amazing performance 💥! Darwins (Guglielmo) and Ferrando vibes are so on point 😎, and Lucy Crowe's acting skills are seriously underrated 🤫 gotta give props to Jeremy Sams' translation too 📚, it's like he's speaking the audience's language 🗣️!
