Cynthia Erivo makes Golden Globes history — and "Wicked" still gets snubbed

Cynthia Erivo Makes Golden Globes History, Wicked Still Snubbed in Nominations

At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony on Monday, a historic milestone was achieved when Cynthia Erivo became the first Black woman to earn two Best Actress nominations for her role in "Wicked: For Good". Her second nomination solidified her place as one of only 12 Black women who have been recognized in this category, with Angela Bassett being the sole winner to date.

However, despite the buzz surrounding its talented leads, the film itself missed out on a Best Picture nomination. It did receive nods for two original songs and a box office achievement, but director Jon M. Chu was once again overlooked in the Best Director category.

The drama category saw some unexpected surprises, including Eva Victor earning a Best Actress nod for her role in "Sorry, Baby", an indie film that explores life after sexual assault. Meanwhile, Michael B. Jordan received recognition for his performance, but his co-star Wunmi Mosaku was overlooked.

In the television sphere, HBO Max's "The White Lotus" led with six nominations, followed by Netflix's "Adolescence" and Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building". However, Rhea Seehorn finally received her first Golden Globe nomination for her role in "Pluribus", after years of being overlooked.

The ceremony also introduced a podcast category this year, with several popular shows nominated. The awards ceremony will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, with host Nikki Glaser returning to the stage.

Despite the historic moments, some fans couldn't help but feel disappointed that "Wicked: For Good" didn't receive more recognition. With Cynthia Erivo's incredible performance once again being celebrated, it remains to be seen how her future projects will fare at upcoming award ceremonies.

🤔 I must say, the underrepresentation of talented women like Rhea Seehorn and Wunmi Mosaku in the nominations was quite striking 🙅‍♀️. It's disheartening that "Wicked: For Good" didn't receive more recognition for its outstanding performances, especially with Cynthia Erivo's masterful portrayal cementing her place as a trailblazer in Hollywood 🌟. The introduction of a podcast category is also noteworthy 👍, but it remains to be seen how it will impact the overall landscape of awards ceremonies. All in all, while there were some notable wins and surprises, it felt like "Wicked: For Good" was left wanting more 💔.

🤔 I'm kinda surprised they snubbed Wicked in Best Picture 🙄. I mean, it was a solid nomination for the original songs 🎵. But come on, two Black women in a single category? That's progress 💁‍♀️. However, I do feel bad for Jon M. Chu, he's been overlooked twice now 🤷‍♂️. And what about Wunmi Mosaku? She was part of a strong cast with Michael B. Jordan 😐. It just feels like some talented people are getting lost in the shuffle ⏱️. I guess we'll have to wait and see how Cynthia Erivo's future projects do 🤞.

I'm low-key bummed for the Wicked squad 🤷‍♀️💔, I mean, Erivo's talent is undeniable, but still... two noms is better than zero, right? 😊 And I'm so hyped for Rhea Seehorn to finally get her due recognition! She's been slaying in Only Murders in the Building 👀👍. And let's be real, Michael B Jordan's snub is whack 💔, but he'll get his chance next time, fam! 😊

tbh I'm so over these Golden Globes snubs 🙄, especially for Wicked: For Good... Cynthia Erivo is a total icon and she deserves so much more recognition! I mean, two nominations in one year? That's amazing, but still, it's like the rest of the industry just doesn't get her (and neither does everyone else, lol). And can we talk about how underrated some other actresses are? Like Rhea Seehorn finally got a nod after all these years 🙌, and Eva Victor for Sorry, Baby?! Those performances were on point! But I guess it's just another year of the usual drama category shenanigans. Still, I'm hyped to see what Cynthia does next 🎬

man... i'm still on a high from cynthia erivo's historic win 🤩 she's breaking barriers left and right, and i'm here for it 💖 i've been following her journey since wicked first hit the stage, and to see her get recognized by the golden globes is just amazing. but at the same time, it's a shame that the film itself didn't get more love 🤕 i mean, those original songs were fire 🔥 and the box office achievement was impressive, but director jon m chu got snubbed again 🙄 still, cynthia's win is all about empowerment for black women on screen 👑 can't wait to see what she does next 🎬

🤕 another year, more snubs for Cynthia Erivo 🙅‍♀️, still no love for Wicked: For Good 🎭 despite that epic performance 💥, and only 12 Black women recognized in this category? 🚫 that's just sad, you know? 😔 also, Eva Victor getting nominated for Sorry, Baby is great, but what about her co-star who killed it too? 🤷‍♀️ same thing with Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku got robbed 🎉. at least Rhea Seehorn finally got her first nom though 👏, that's progress 🌈. can't wait to see how Cynthia's future projects go, but I'm low-key disappointed 😔💔

just can't believe wicked got snubbed again lol 😔 i mean erivo is a genius on screen but it feels like her talent isn't valued enough by the industry 🤦‍♀️ at least she's getting recognition and breaking barriers for black women in lead roles 👏 now let's talk about why "for good" wasn't even considered for best picture 🎥 is that a sign of our society still not valuing stories about black women? 🤔

awww yay cynthia erivo is literally breaking barriers left and right 🙌💫 i'm so hyped for her second best actress nom she deserves all the recognition for her talent 💖🎭 i feel bad that wicked: good didn't get more nominations but two nods are still amazing, plus it's not every day a black woman gets two nomms in one category 😊 what do u think will happen at the next awards? 🤔

omg yaaas Cynthia Erivo is literally breaking barriers and I'm here for it!!! 🙌🏽♀️ 2 nominations in one night is already a win in my book lol but omg what's up with Wicked not getting more love tho?!? 🤔 it's like they're trying to snub the talented cast and crew 😒 anyway, Congrats Cynthia for making history and I'm so hyped for her future projects!!! 💥💫

I'm still trying to process the Golden Globes snubs 🤔. On one hand, I'm super proud of Cynthia Erivo for breaking those historic milestones 🎉. It's about time we see more diversity in that acting category 🌈. But at the same time, I feel bad for Wicked: For Good – it's such a talented film and everyone deserves recognition 💕. And what's up with the snub for Jon M. Chu as Best Director? He's an amazing director 🎥. It's like, we're celebrating all these incredible performances but forgetting about the people who bring them to life 🙄.
