Dangerous cold sweeps NYC area as officials urge precautions

New Yorkers Batten Down as Arctic Blast Brings Frigid Temperatures

A severe cold snap has descended upon the New York region, with officials urging residents to limit their time outdoors due to temperatures plummeting into the teens on Monday. Real-feel temperatures are expected to drop to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the coldest day since February.

The National Weather Service warns of extreme gusts reaching up to 28 miles per hour, which could exacerbate wind chill and make conditions even more treacherous. Landlords in the city are reminded that they must maintain a minimum temperature of 68 degrees during the day and 62 degrees at night when it's below 55 degrees outside.

Residents are advised to dress in layers and protect themselves from frostbite, which can manifest as numbness or pale skin. Hypothermia symptoms, such as shivering, confusion, or drowsiness, should also be watched for. The city's emergency management agency has issued a call to action, urging people to stay indoors and seeking help if they experience any of these symptoms.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is taking precautions by monitoring weather-related issues on its public transportation systems. Bus drivers are being instructed to reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and clear ice and frost from buses before heading out on their routes.

Residents can check the MTA's app or website for up-to-date transit service information. Meanwhile, city outreach teams will be working to connect homeless residents with shelter services. For emergency situations, officials recommend calling 911.

As the cold snap continues into Tuesday, a high of around 34 degrees is forecast in Central Park, with wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees possible. Gusts up to 22 miles per hour are expected on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, temperatures are set to rise to around 45 degrees, with rain currently in the forecast.

ugh it's freezing outside right now 🥶 my neighbors were talking about how they're having to shovel their sidewalks like 3 times already this week 🚮 i feel for all the homeless folks out there trying to stay warm, but on the other hand, can't say i blame people for wanting to get out and enjoy the winter scenery ❄️ maybe a mix of both - some community centers or public spaces that are warm and cozy would be awesome to grab a hot drink or snack while waiting for the weather to pass 🍵

ugh, i'm like so cold rn 🥶 i just wanna curl up with a hot cuppa and watch some netflix, but noooo... it's freezing outside 🌫️ i feel for all my friends in NYC who have to deal with this crazy weather 😩 i've had to reschedule our plans like 3 times already 🤦‍♀️ hope everyone stays safe and warm over there ❤️

Ugh, I'm freezing just thinking about it 🥶. This cold snap is crazy! It's like when I was a kid and we'd play outside in the snow all day and then have hot chocolate by the fire afterwards... those were the days 😊. Now, people are literally having to stay indoors because it's so cold. And don't even get me started on the wind chill - that's just crazy talk ❄️. I remember when I was younger and we'd go sledding at Rockefeller Center and it would be so much fun... now, it sounds like you'd have to bundle up just to walk out of your apartment building 😂. Anyway, hope everyone stays safe and warm...

omg did u no its freezin out there lol i hope ppl r ok dont wanna catch frostbite 🥶 meanwhile i was thinking about trying out that new coffee shop downtown has anyone else been ?? and btw how do they make those fancy snowflakes on tv??

omg its literally freezing in new york right now ❄️ i was walking down the street yesterday and my face hurt from the cold lol anyway im really worried about homeless ppl getting stuck outside they should have more shelter options open ⏰

omg this arctic blast is so crazy!! 😱 i feel bad for everyone in nyc having to deal with this - like, can we just stay inside and binge-watch netflix or something? 🍿 meanwhile, let's all give a shoutout to those city outreach teams working hard to connect homeless residents with shelter services ❤️ stay warm and safe, new yorkers! 💪

Wow! ❄️🌨️ Like, can you even believe it's that cold already? I'm no New Yorker, but I feel for them. Hypothermia symptoms and frostbite? That's crazy talk! 😱 Landlords gotta keep those buildings warm, though... 68 degrees is nothing compared to the chill outside. Stay safe, NYC! 🏙️💕

omg I'm so done with this cold snap already 😩❄️ like isn't it winter yet? can we just have one day without freezing our butts off pls?! 🤦‍♀️ and btw, who thought it was a good idea to let homeless people out on the streets during this weather?! 🚫 shelters are supposed to be available 24/7 for a reason! ❄️💨

ugh im so worried about all those new yorkers out there braving this crazy cold weather 🤕😬 its like they're not even thinking about their own well being its been ages since ill see anyone from NYC but hearing about it makes me wanna bundle up just thinking about how cold and windy its gonna be over there 🥶💨 i hope everyone stays safe and warm if you guys know someone who might need help staying indoors or getting some assistance just let them know okay?

omg u guys its like -40 outside rn lol i cant even imagine how cold thats is like we're still using flip phones and listening to music on youtube lol whats gonna happen to the homeless people out there gotta bundle up for real though dont wanna get frostbite 🤣💨

I'm not surprised by this arctic blast hitting NYC, it's like we're overdue for a cold snap anyway... but still, temps plummeting into teens? That's friggin crazy! Everyone needs to bundle up and be careful out there, I mean, frostbite and hypothermia can sneak up on you in seconds. And poor homeless folks, they deserve our help even more during this time. Good thing the city is getting its act together with outreach teams and emergency services ready. My grandma would kill me if I went outside without my scarf today lol...

brrr 🥶, this cold snap is crazy! i'm from nyc, been here for years, but even i wasn't prepared for this kind of weather... people gotta be careful out there, especially the homeless folk who are already struggling to stay warm. 68 degrees is kinda harsh, i feel you landlords 🤷‍♂️. city's always trying to help, good job on connecting homeless folks with shelter services, though. hope everyone stays safe and indoors where it's cozy 😊.

omg i just saw this article about the arctic blast hitting new york and im like wtf how can it get that cold already?! i know we're still in jan but i didn't think it was possible for temps to drop that low lol my grandma lives in ny and she's always saying its so cold there in winter lol anyway yeah gotta make sure to bundle up if you gotta be outside today! anyone have a good coat or parka that can withstand -20 temps tho?

omg yaaas i'm so over this arctic blast lol can't believe nyc is freezing rn like who needs snow when u can have a cup of hot cocoa and snuggle up by the fireplace? btw mta should totes reward ppl for taking public transport during this cold snap, maybe some free hot choc or something 🍫🚂💨

man this arctic blast is like a reminder that we're all just tiny specks in this crazy vast universe 🌫️ you know how we get so used to our daily routines and then suddenly something like this happens and it's like... okay what's next? does anyone really have control over their own lives when the weather is gonna be like that? 😬 it's like we're all just waiting for the other shoe to drop, or in this case, for the wind chill to kick in ❄️

Ugh my poor kids they're going to be SO cold tomorrow I've already prepped their thermals and warm socks 🤣👶 but seriously can't we just have a mild winter for once?! 😩 this is like something out of a horror movie all those sub 50s temps it's crazy how fast it drops. Did anyone else hear about the school closures today? My daughter is going to be so bummed she was looking forward to art class 🎨

Ugh, I'm so over this cold snap 🥶. I mean, can't we just have a decent day without freezing our butts off? The MTA's app is being super finicky today too ⚠️. Had to refresh my page like three times to get the bus schedule for tomorrow. And don't even get me started on landlords who think they can just ignore the temperature guidelines 🤦‍♀️. I'm pretty sure I saw someone getting escorted by NYPD outside their apartment building because it was below 55 degrees ❄️. Can we just have a reasonable day without anyone being frostbitten or worse? 🙏

ugh, this cold snap is giving me anxiety thinking about my kiddos having to trudge through snow and ice just to get to school 🤕. as a parent, it's hard enough getting them out of bed on time without having to bundle up like they're going on an arctic expedition ❄️. can we just fast forward to spring already? 😩
