Delhi’s pollution is a crisis of democracy as much as public health, citizens say

New Delhi's annual descent into smog is a stark reminder of the country's democratic failures as much as its public health crisis. Every year, between October and November, the city's skies turn a toxic grey, visibility drops to almost zero, and hospitals are overwhelmed by patients suffering from severe respiratory illnesses.

The government's efforts to combat pollution have been met with skepticism, particularly after the recent decision to allow "green crackers" during Diwali, a festival that saw a significant increase in air pollution levels. The move was seen as a cynical attempt to placate voters while doing little to address the root causes of the problem.

Citizens and environmental activists are growing increasingly frustrated with the government's lack of action on pollution, which has become a symbol of India's struggling democracy. A recent protest against the government's inaction was quickly dispersed by police, with over 80 demonstrators arrested in just an hour.

The crisis is not just a local issue but also a national concern, with India leading talks for climate justice at the Global South COP30 in Brazil. However, experts argue that tackling air pollution must be part of this effort, and that India's participation in the conference cannot come at the expense of its own citizens' health.

The government has proposed various measures to combat pollution, including "anti-smog guns" and cloud seeding, but these have been criticized as short-term fixes. Environmental activist Saurav Das argues that these measures are more focused on perception management than addressing the root causes of the problem.

As India prepares for worsening pollution, citizens are growing increasingly vocal about their demands for change. The government must take immediate action to address this crisis, not just for the health and well-being of its citizens but also as a matter of national pride and democratic accountability.

Ugh, can't believe what's happening in India... 🤕 it's like they're playing with people's lives and pretending everything is fine. "Green crackers" during Diwali? Are you kidding me? It's just a bunch of empty promises to get votes while they do nothing about the real issues. The government's always trying to spin things, but we're not buying it. 💔 I mean, what's the point of having a democracy if they can't even protect their own citizens' health? And now they're talking about "anti-smog guns" and cloud seeding like that's gonna solve everything... please 🙄. It's all just smoke and mirrors at this point. The fact that 80 people got arrested for protesting is just another example of how out of touch the government is with its people. We need real change, not just some half-baked solutions to appease us while they continue to screw things up. 🤦‍♂️

I'm really worried about what's happening in Delhi every year 🤕🌫️. I feel like we're not doing enough to protect our own air quality, you know? 🙅‍♂️ We're always talking about climate justice at COP30, but what's the point if we can't even take care of ourselves first? 💡 I mean, 80 people getting arrested for protesting is crazy! 😲 We need to stand up for our rights and demand change from our government. It's not like they're ignoring us or anything... it's just that they don't seem to be listening 🗣️. I wish we could see some real action on this pollution problem, you know? Something more than just "anti-smog guns" and cloud seeding 💨. We need concrete solutions, not just PR moves 📰.

Ugh, smog season is just getting worse 😷🌫️, it's like they're trying to suck every last breath outta us. And now they're proposing "anti-smog guns" 🚫💨? That's just a bunch of PR spin, if you ask me. These measures are just band-aids on a bigger problem. We need real change, not token gestures from the government. I'm so over these protests being dispersed by the cops 🤬, it's like they're more interested in silencing us than listening to our concerns. Can't we just have some clean air for once? 🙄 The worst part is, they're still trying to justify their inaction on pollution 🙅‍♂️. It's time for the government to step up and take real action. We deserve better 💪.

ugh i cant even imagine living in new delhi during smog season 😷 it sounds like such a nightmare 🌪️ u know what's weird though? i was just reading about how some cities are starting to use bee-friendly plants to reduce air pollution 🐝 they basically plant flowers and stuff that produce less pollution and more bees yay 🐝💚

omg u r right! smog in new delhi is like, literally killing ppl 🤕 every year it gets worse & no one seems 2 care 🙄 the gov's "efforts" 2 combat pollution are joke 🤣 who lets out green crackers during diwali?! 🎉 that was straight up racist against poor ppl livin in Delhi 😩

i mean, india leads talks on climate justice but how can u lead when u cant even take care of ur own citizens? 🤷‍♀️ it's like, we get it u wanna be a global leader but first take care of ur own air 🌫️ u need 2 do better than anti-smog guns & cloud seeding that r just bandaid solutions 🚫

i'm so done with the gov's lack of action 💔 ppl r getting sick & dyin & still no change 🔄 its time 4 a real solution not these half-baked ideas 🤔

I'm all for making "green crackers" a permanent fixture on Indian festivals lol 😂. Think about it, who needs clean air when you can have sparklers that are almost as bad as the pollution? It's like, the government is trying to appease us with superficial solutions while doing nothing to tackle the real issue. The protests are getting more intense and I'm loving every minute of it 🤘. We need to hold our leaders accountable for putting people over profits. And btw, what's with all these "anti-smog guns" and cloud seeding nonsense? Sounds like some sci-fi movie stuff to me 🚀. Let's get serious about addressing the root causes of pollution, not just making a show out of it 💪.
