Reading is like a superpower ! I mean, Derek Owusu's story is just crazy - he was all like "meh" on reading till he hit 24 and then BAM! He discovered his fave authors & got into this whole world of literature . Now he's all about those books that help him grow & understand himself better . I can totes relate to re-reading books to boost my mood (I mean, who doesn't love a good feel-good read? ). And omg, Richard Yates' A Good School is on my TBR list ASAP ! Have you guys read any of these authors or books?
IM SO INSPIRED BY DEREK OWUSU'S STORY!!! HE SHOWED US THAT READING CAN BE A GAME CHANGER, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE NEED IT MOST. I MEAN, HE WASN'T EVEN 24 BEFORE HE DISCOVERED THE JOY OF READING AND IT LED HIM TO PURSUE HIS PASSION FOR WRITING. AND LOOK AT ALL THE AMAZING AUTHORS HE'S READ AND ENDED UP LOVING!!!
he's so lucky to have found reading at 24 , I mean, can you imagine not enjoying books until then? for me, reading is like my escape from reality , it's how I unwind and learn new things
omg u gotta feel for derek owusu he was literally stuck in a reading rut till he hit 24 lol like i know it sounds so late but tbh i needed some time to figure out what kinda books made me feel good too i've always been more of a visual learner so if ur not getting into reading from a young age u might wanna try audiobooks or watch movie adaptations of ur fave novels idk tho maybe owusu just needed his own path lol he did discover some awesome authors that helped him understand himself better like bell hooks and benjamin zephaniah those 2 books really made me think about masculinity in a different way anyway i'm glad derek found his tribe (and authors) eventually
so they say reading has got the power to change lives but i'm not so sure about that...i mean don't get me wrong derek owusu's story is cool and all but it feels like he was already on his way to becoming a writer even before he discovered all these amazing books. it's like the books just helped him tap into something that was already inside him. i'm not saying it can't change lives, but maybe it's more about finding the right person at the right time? and another thing, why do we always gotta make reading sound so magical? "it's life-changing" or "it's going to shape your entire existence"...can't we just say it's a good book?
Reading can be super personal and stuff. I mean, some people find it like the ultimate escape or whatever, but for others, it takes time to develop a taste for it . Like Derek Owusu, who didn't really get into reading until he was 24... that's pretty cool! He found his way through all these authors and books, and it sounds like they helped him grow in some big ways . I'm curious, though - what about people who aren't exactly book-smart? Do you guys still find time for reading or is it more of a 'me' thing?
