Disney names parks and cruises boss Josh D'Amaro as next CEO

Disney has tapped Josh D'Amaro, current head of Disney Parks and Resorts, to succeed Bob Iger as CEO, bringing an end to a tumultuous succession process that saw his handpicked successor Bob Chapek ousted just two years into the job.

D'Amaro, who has been chair of Disney's experiences since 2020, will take over the top spot in March, marking a return to form for a company that had struggled to find its footing under Iger's guidance. The announcement comes as Disney reports a surge in profits from its streaming services, but warns of "headwinds" in the US theme park business.

Under D'Amaro's leadership, Disney has seen a renewed focus on creative excellence and innovation, with a emphasis on delivering exceptional value to consumers and shareholders. However, some analysts have noted that D'Amaro is relatively unknown in Hollywood, and his appointment may be seen as a calculated move to address concerns about the company's brand image.

In an effort to mitigate these concerns, Disney has also announced the promotion of Dana Walden, co-chair of its entertainment division, to president and chief creative officer. Walden will oversee the company's creative efforts, including film and television production, music publishing, and live events.

The move marks a significant shift in Disney's leadership structure, with Iger remaining on the board until December. The new CEO, D'Amaro, will receive a base salary of $2.5m, with the potential for a performance-based bonus of up to 250% of his base salary.

As D'Amaro prepares to take the reins, he has expressed his gratitude to the board for entrusting him with leading the company and has outlined his vision for Disney's future growth and innovation. With the appointment of Walden as president and chief creative officer, Disney appears to be taking steps to strengthen its creative leadership and address concerns about its brand image.

The move is also seen as a significant coup for Iger, who had declared Chapek his successor just six years ago, only to have him ousted after just two years. The appointment of D'Amaro marks a return to form for the company, which had struggled to find its footing under Iger's guidance.

Shares in Disney fell 1% during early trading on Tuesday, but the announcement is likely to be seen as a positive move for the company, with many analysts welcoming the return of Iger and the appointment of D'Amaro as CEO.

im thinkin d'amaro's got this... after all the drama with chapek, it was bound to happen. and yeah, walden's a solid pick - she's been doin great work in entertainment division. i hope d'amaro can bring some much needed stability to disney's parks & resorts business tho. those numbers are lookin pretty rough πŸ€•

OMG, yaaas!! πŸŽ‰ Finally, some stability after that crazy succession drama! πŸ˜… I'm so hyped for Josh D'Amaro to take over as CEO - his focus on creative excellence and innovation is just what Disney needed πŸŽ¬πŸ’‘. And promoting Dana Walden to president and chief creative officer? Genius move! πŸ’₯ She's gonna bring the magic back to Disney's entertainment division πŸ’«. I'm sure it's a bit of a risk putting someone new at the helm, but I think D'Amaro is perfect for the job πŸ™Œ. And let's be real, Bob Chapek's departure was long overdue πŸ˜‚. Fingers crossed this is the start of a brighter future for Disney! πŸ’–

I'm so hyped for Josh D'Amaro to take over as CEO 🀩! He's been doing an amazing job leading Disney Parks and Resorts, and it's clear he's got a deep understanding of what makes Disney tick. The fact that they're promoting Dana Walden to president and chief creative officer is also a huge plus - she's been a driving force behind some of Disney's most innovative projects in the past.

I think this move is gonna be super beneficial for Disney's brand image 🌟. I mean, let's face it, Bob Chapek didn't exactly have the best run as CEO, and it's clear that Iger's guidance wasn't working out as planned. But D'Amaro has a proven track record of delivering results, and he's got a passion for creative excellence that's gonna serve Disney well.

Plus, can we talk about how awesome it is that Disney is investing in its creators? πŸ’Ό They're promoting people who are passionate about storytelling and innovation, and I think that's gonna pay off big time. So, bring on the new era of Disney greatness! πŸŽ‰

I gotta say, this whole thing just smells like corporate politics πŸ€‘. First Chapek gets tossed out after 2 years, now it's some guy nobody knows from Hollywood taking over? Give me a break. And let's be real, $2.5m base salary for the new CEO is way too low considering what these people are bringing in through streaming profits πŸ’Έ. Iger might have been struggling to find his footing, but at least he had some track record of success before getting ousted πŸ€”. This whole thing just feels like a calculated move by Disney's board to shore up their brand image and placate shareholders... meanwhile, what about all the employees who are left wondering what's next for the company? 🀯

πŸ€” just thinking about it, i dont get why they cant just stick with one plan lol. like bob iger picks some guy, that guy fails after a year or two and now theyre bringing in this other guy who is more experienced at the parks but not so much in hollywood. its like trying to fix a car by changing the engine and wheels πŸš—πŸ’₯. can someone explain to me why dana walden gets promoted tho? what makes her more creative than bob chapek who wasnt exactly winning any awards either πŸ€”πŸŽ¬

I think this is a pretty big deal for Disney! They've been through some tough times under Bob Iger's leadership, but it sounds like Josh D'Amaro is going to bring a fresh perspective to the company πŸ€”. The fact that they're promoting Dana Walden to president and chief creative officer is also a great move - she seems like someone who can really help shape Disney's creative direction πŸ’‘. I'm not too worried about D'Amaro being relatively unknown in Hollywood, though - he's clearly got some serious skills under his belt πŸŽ‰. And hey, at least the board is looking out for Disney shareholders with that performance-based bonus πŸ€‘. Overall, I think this is a good omen for Disney's future!

I think this whole thing is kinda like a two-party system - you got your old guard, led by Iger, and then you got your new kid on the block, D'Amaro πŸ€”. It's like they're trying to reboot Disney with a fresh face. But, let's be real, it's still the same company. The question is, how much of their success comes from D'Amaro's experience in running theme parks and not enough from his Hollywood credentials? It feels like Disney is playing catch-up, trying to regain that Disney magic that they had before Iger took over πŸŽ‰. And what about all the other stakeholders, like shareholders? Are they happy with this new leadership? We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out πŸ’Έ

🀯 just what we need another shake up at Disney! i mean i'm all for innovation and creative excellence, but come on 2 years is just to soon to be ousted from a job especially when ur supposed to be grooming someone for the top spot... bob chapek got roasted and now we're back to square one? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ at least damaro has a solid track record in parks and resorts but let's not forget he's also relatively unknown in hollywood this whole thing just feels like a calculated move to address concerns about disney's brand image and i'm not sure how that's gonna sit well with fans... πŸŽ¬πŸ‘€

Aww, dis is so relievin' news πŸ™! Finally, Disney got someone who's gonna bring some stability & creativity back to the table πŸŽ¨πŸ‘ Josh D'Amaro seems like a great choice, especially with his experience in parks and resorts 🌳❀️ It's gonna be interesting to see how he'll mix things up while still honoring the magic of Disney ✨ I'm glad they're makin' some changes & investin' in creative leadership πŸ’ͺ Dana Walden's promotion is also super exciting, can't wait to see what she'll bring to the table πŸŽπŸ‘

D'Amaro seems like a good fit for the job πŸ€”πŸ’Ό, but let's see how he does under pressure πŸ˜…. The streaming business is killing it right now, so maybe they can use that momentum to boost the theme park biz too πŸ’ΈπŸŽ’. I'm curious to see how Walden will handle creative decisions 🎬, and if D'Amaro's focus on innovation will actually pay off 🀞

πŸ€” i think disney needed a shakeup after that tumultuous succession process πŸ”„ bob iger's leadership was starting to feel stale for some people. josh d'amaro seems like a breath of fresh air, all about creative excellence and innovation πŸ’‘. i'm curious to see how he'll balance that with the business side of things. and yay for dana walden getting more recognition as president and chief creative officer πŸŽ‰ she's got some big shoes to fill, but i think disney is making a smart move by promoting her from within. fingers crossed it all pays off πŸ’ͺ

omg i dont know about this lol damaros got no hype at all πŸ€”, like what makes him qualified now? he was just head of parks and resorts for like 5 years... how does that prepare u to lead a global entertainment giant? πŸ’Έ i mean we get it, disney needs a shakeup but can't they at least give us some warning signs before making such drastic changes? πŸ“Ί this is exactly why im starting to lose faith in the news outlets here - all this hype around damaro and walden without giving us any real info on how they plan to tackle the actual issues... πŸ’”

I'm curious about this new CEO, Josh D'Amaro πŸ€”. He's got some big shoes to fill after Bob Iger stepped down, but it sounds like Disney is getting back on track with a focus on creative excellence πŸ’‘. The promotion of Dana Walden as president and chief creative officer is also a great move, she seems like the right person for the job 🎬. But what do you guys think about D'Amaro's relatively unknown background in Hollywood? Should he be worried about being seen as a calculated move to fix Disney's brand image? πŸ’Έ

omg i'm low-key hyped about Josh D'Amaro taking over as ceo 🀩 he's def got a lot of experience under his belt with disney parks & resorts and chairing disney experiences since 2020. i think its great that he's bringing back the focus on creative excellence & innovation πŸŽ¨πŸ’‘ it'll be sick to see what he comes up with next. but tbh, some ppl might be worried cuz hes not super known in hollywood lol like wut if his move is just a calculated one tho? anywayz, i'm all about disney's new direction under D'Amaro πŸŽ‰ and cant wait to c how it plays out! πŸ’Έ

just heard this news about disney changing ceos again lol πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ d'a maro's got some big shoes to fill but i think he's got a solid track record with parks and resorts, so fingers crossed for him! also glad they're promoting walden to president and cco, she's definitely someone who knows her stuff. the thing that gets me is how much drama there was over bob chapek getting ousted tho 🀯 some people were saying he didn't stand a chance after iger's reign... maybe it was just timing? anyway, 2.5m base salary for d'a maro is not bad at all πŸ’Έ gotta see how this all plays out in march!
