Driver in deadly San Mateo Bridge crash was distracted by his cell phone, CHP says

A deadly San Mateo Bridge crash has claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman, Mary Hurtado Duran, after a distracted driver crashed into her stalled Kia sedan on Tuesday. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Ford transit van, who is also seriously injured, was rushed to Stanford Hospital for treatment.

According to authorities, the driver of the Ford became preoccupied with his cell phone just before the crash and lost sight of the road ahead. When he returned his attention to driving, it was too late to avoid the stalled Kia sedan directly in front of him.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) revealed that the driver's cellphone distraction led to the fatal accident, which prompted all westbound lanes on the bridge to be closed until 8 p.m. as authorities investigated the scene. The CHP is still investigating the incident and has not yet disclosed the driver's speed at the time of the crash.

The investigation into Tuesday's deadly San Mateo Bridge crash continues, with a focus on how a cellphone distraction contributed to the fatal accident.

Ugh I just heard about that terrible bridge crash in San Mateo πŸ€• and it's still so fresh in my mind. I mean what can you say? A distracted driver literally takes someone's life on the road...it's just devastating πŸ˜”. And to think that guy was on his phone, not even paying attention where he was going. It's like, come on man! We need to be more aware of our surroundings while driving. This is a huge reminder to all of us to stay focused and put down those phones for a sec when we're behind the wheel πŸ“΄.

It's just so frustrating that it had to happen here in California too...I know we have some of the best roads in the country, but safety always comes first, you know? πŸ’” I hope the guy who was driving is okay and that justice is served. This accident needs to prompt a serious discussion about road safety and phone usage while driving πŸš¨πŸ’»

Ugh, this is so depressing πŸ€•... A 54-yr-old woman's life just cut short because some dude was too busy staring at his phone πŸ“±πŸš—. Can't even drive without being distracted anymore, it's like, what's the point? 😩 And now they're closing down the whole bridge for hours, traffic is gonna be a nightmare πŸŒ‰πŸ˜‘... and what really gets me is that they still don't know how fast the driver was going when he crashed into her car πŸ€”. It's just so frustrating knowing that maybe some small action could've prevented this from happening πŸ’”

πŸ˜” just heard about this tragic accident on the San Mateo Bridge... so many lives lost over something as senseless as phone distractions πŸ“±πŸš— it's like we're all just one mistake away from disaster, you know? and it's not just about the victim, but also her loved ones who have to deal with the aftermath of this senseless loss πŸ’” anyway, I guess it's just a reminder to stay vigilant on our roads and keep our eyes on the road πŸš—πŸ’¨

Ugh, so sad to hear about Mary πŸ€•... I mean, who can be that careless on the road? The driver just lost it for like 2 seconds and... game over 😱. Can't believe they didn't put their phone away when they were driving in a area with tons of people around. It's just basic common sense, you know? And now Mary is gone 🌹. Anyway, so glad the other person is okay, I guess... but seriously, how many times have we seen this before? 😩

Man... another crazy bridge crash in Cali πŸš—πŸ˜±. It's like, drivers can't even get their attention back from those phones for 5 secs and it ends up costing someone's life πŸ’”. I'm all for staying connected on-the-go, but come on! Can't we find a way to balance that with being safe on the roads? The fact that this driver was texting just before the crash is just insane 🀯. And now another life is lost... it's just too much. I'm not saying we can solve all these problems with cell phone laws or anything, but maybe we need to rethink our priorities for a sec πŸ˜•. Anyway, hoping the investigation finds out some concrete stuff and the driver gets justice πŸ™.

OMG 😱, can you believe this?! 🀯 A single second of cell phone usage can lead to such a devastating outcome. The stats are crazy - did you know that 78% of drivers have admitted to using their phones while driving? πŸ“Š And, it's estimated that 1 in 5 fatal car crashes involve distracted driving! πŸ’” The Ford driver's phone was just 6 inches away from his face and he still couldn't keep an eye on the road. That's what I call a recipe for disaster!

And, let's talk about the impact of this incident - the victim's family will never get to see her again, and the driver is lucky to be alive πŸ™. The California Highway Patrol is doing its part, but we need more awareness about the dangers of distracted driving! πŸ’‘ We should all take a minute to think about our actions while driving, and put our phones away for just one second longer.

Here's a fun fact: did you know that texting while driving increases your risk of being involved in a crash by 23 times? πŸ“ˆ It's time to break this habit, guys! Let's make a pact to stay focused on the road! πŸ’ͺ
