Former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema has been accused by her ex-husband of having an affair with a member of her security detail, which allegedly led to the breakdown of his marriage. In a lawsuit filed last year and recently moved to federal court, Matthew Ammel claims that Sinema began pursuing him despite knowing he was married.
Ammel alleges that Sinema hired him after he retired from the Army in 2022 and accompanied her on several trips, including to Napa Valley, California; Las Vegas, and Saudi Arabia. However, his wife discovered "romantic and lascivious" messages exchanged between Sinema and Ammel over the Signal messaging app.
According to the lawsuit, Sinema gave Ammel a job as a national security fellow in her Senate office while he continued to work for her campaign as a bodyguard. The complaint alleges that Sinema suggested it was best to keep their relationship private to avoid public optics.
The affair allegedly lasted from the fall of 2023 to the end of 2024 and included attending numerous concerts together, such as Green Day, Taylor Swift, and U2. Ammel has struggled with post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and traumatic brain injuries related to his military deployments in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
The lawsuit also claims that Sinema paid for psychedelic treatment for Ammel, which included a suggestion by Sinema that he bring MDMA on a work trip "so that she could guide him through a psychedelic experience." Ammel's ex-wife is seeking at least $75,000 from Sinema in damages.
