Three Good Samaritans killed in I-57 crash as they checked on other victims; driver survives.
Tragedy struck on the Illinois highway system when three men stepped out of their cars to aid others after a vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 57 in West Pullman. Ruben Lujano, 50, and his friends Daekwon Cunningham, 29, and Martese J. Williams, 33, were all killed instantly.
According to relatives, Lujano was known for being selfless and putting the needs of others before his own. His former wife Destiny Jones described him as someone who "never took credit for anything" and always tried to make light of difficult situations. His daughter Leylani Padilla's 30th birthday was also celebrated by his family, but not without him attending.
Daekwon Cunningham was a well-respected figure in the community, with his mother Tracy stating that he brought light and energy to every space he was in. He had been involved with a local violence prevention organization called Chicago CRED and had recently started attending trade school.
The three men stepped out of their vehicles after an accident occurred nearby, but unfortunately for them, another car hit and killed all three instantly at around midnight on Wednesday.
