‘FC Barcelona Didn’t Sign Me Because I Was Ugly,’ Says 90s Legend

FC Barcelona's Regret Over Passing Up Russian Legend Victor Onopko Due to His Unconventional Looks.

Victor Onopko, the 90s Russian La Liga legend who had stints with FC Barcelona and other prominent clubs in Spain, recently spilled the beans that he was turned down by the Catalan giants due to his appearance. The revelation came on a YouTube channel called El Bigote de Abadía.

The claim made by Onopko that Barcelona's then-coach Johan Cruyff deemed him "ugly" led to a missed opportunity for the Russian footballer, who joined Real Oviedo in 1995 and went on to make 216 appearances. According to Onopko, he initially signed with Oviedo but entered into an agreement that would have allowed him to join another club if a higher offer was made. However, the club deceived him by telling him they wouldn't accept more money.

Onopko also expressed disappointment over how Barcelona handled his transfer and claimed that Cruyff's team decided not to sign him because of his looks, which might be attributed to Cruyff's reputation for seeking out unique talent.

Despite this setback, Onopko became a beloved cult hero in La Liga with 7 goals and an impressive 109 caps for the Russian national team. Today, he serves as an assistant manager at Rostov FC in Russia's top division.

Onopko's comments coincided with Barcelona facing Real Sociedad in the league, where they were on a 11-match winning streak.

I mean, what a complete and utter disaster for FC Barcelona 🤦‍♂️! I'm not surprised that Onopko spilled the beans, tbh... it's not like he had anything to lose at this point. And yeah, it makes total sense that they turned him down due to his "unconventional looks"... I mean, who wouldn't want a player with a questionable face? 😂 It's all about appearances, right?

But for real, though, it's messed up that he was deceived by Real Oviedo... what a low move. And now we know that Cruyff himself was the one who deemed him "ugly" 🤣. I guess you could say that Onopko's looks were the main reason why Barcelona missed out on an amazing player.

And can we just talk about how cringeworthy it is that this came out now, when Barcelona is on a 11-match winning streak? Like, do they really think that this is gonna distract from their recent form? Please 😂. I'm calling it now: Onopko's comments are gonna be all over social media and everyone's gonna be talking about how FC Barcelona was wrong to pass up this legend...

I gotta disagree, think Onopko's got it right lol 🤣. I mean, who says being ugly is bad? Cruyff was all about creativity and individuality, maybe he just saw something different in Onopko that others didn't. And honestly, if Barcelona was so scared of a guy with unconventional looks, what kinda team did they really want to build? A cookie-cutter squad with no edge? 😂 I think Onopko's got the right idea, embracing your uniqueness is key to success. Plus, Oviedo made a mistake by not accepting his higher offer, that's on them not Onopko 🤑

I feel bad for Victor Onopko 🤔. Can you imagine not being good enough because of how you look? It makes me think of when our school's sports teams are choosing new uniforms... it's always about finding that perfect uniform design, and I worry some people might be judged for who they are just like Onopko was back then.

On a lighter note, I wish we had such cool sports stories to talk about in class 🏆. Maybe we could even do an essay on how sports can shape our identity? That would be pretty interesting...

man, that's wild 🤯 i mean, who would've thought that a player's looks could be a major reason for being passed over by one of the biggest clubs in europe? like, what's wrong with having a few facial features that don't fit the mold of traditional attractiveness? it's crazy how much emphasis is placed on physical appearance in sports. and to think that javan cruiff himself was behind this decision... that's just sad 🤕. but hey, victor onopko went on to have an amazing career despite this setback, and i gotta respect that 🙏. maybe we can all learn from his story that it's not about how you look, but what you can bring to the table 💪.

I feel bad for this dude Victor Onopko 🤕. Who decides a person's worth based on how they look? 😡 I mean, I've seen some ugly guys play football and make it big, but to be turned down by Barcelona just because of looks is harsh. Cruyff was supposed to be all about individuality and unique talent... guess that didn't apply to Onopko 😒.

It's wild to think that this could have been a different life for him if the club had given him a chance. Instead, he went on to have an amazing career in La Liga and even became a cult hero with Russia 🇷🇺. Kudos to him for bouncing back from that setback and achieving his goals. Maybe we can all learn from this that it's not about how you look, but what's inside that matters 💪.

omg can u believe this 🤯 like cruyff was literally known for his quirky style and yet he still discriminates based on looks 🚫 its like barca was worried what ppl would think if they signed this russian legend 🤷‍♂️ i mean who cares about looks when ur a footballer lol? anyway i heard opko's got some sick skills on the pitch 🏃‍♂️ and btw why did barca go with that "deceived" tactic 🤑 u guys dont believe in transparency or integrity 😔

just think about it 🤔... looks shouldn't matter in football, right? 🏈 what would've been if Onopko was given a chance? who knows maybe he would've led barca to more success 🎉 the fact that Cruyff was looking for "unique talent" is pretty interesting too... did he actually see something special in Onopko or was it just an excuse?

I don't know if I believe this story 🤔. Like, seriously, "ugly" and that's why they didn't sign him? I mean, I've seen some questionable hairstyles in my time, but that's not exactly what you're looking for in a player 😂. And can we talk about how convenient it is to say now that Cruyff just thought Onopko was ugly when the dude had an amazing career with Real Oviedo 🤷‍♂️. I get that everyone gets snubbed at some point, but this feels like a pretty easy way out for Barcelona 🙄. And what's next? They're gonna come out and say they didn't sign him because he was allergic to the ball or something 😂?

OMG, can you believe that? 😱 #VictorOnopko deserves so much more recognition for his skills on the pitch! I mean, who judges a player's talent based on their looks? Cruyff was all about innovation and finding unique players, but it sounds like that didn't apply to Onopko 🤦‍♂️. The fact that Barcelona deceived him over the transfer deal is even more shady 🤑. But hey, Onopko bounced back from this setback and became a legend in his own right! 💪 #OnopkoDeservedBetter #LaLigaLegend #BarcaMissedOut

I mean, come on... 🙄 FC Barcelona can't even get it right when it comes to scouting talent? This is a big club with huge resources and they're gonna pass up someone like Victor Onopko because he doesn't fit their traditional beauty standard 🤣 I'm sure Johan Cruyff's reputation for spotting unique talent was just an excuse to not take a chance on the guy. And what's with El Bigote de Abadía's YouTube channel? It sounds like some random fanboy trying to stir up drama 💁‍♂️ Anyway, good on Onopko for speaking out and becoming a cult hero in La Liga... it's about time someone took credit where credit is due 🙌

I cant believe that fc barca was so harsh on poor victor onopko 🤕 he deserves way more respect just because of his appearance 😔 it's crazy to think that someone as talented as him got rejected by the biggest club in spain due to how he looks 👀 Johan cruyff should be ashamed of himself for treating victor like this 💔 and what's even worse is that fc barca didnt even give him a second chance 🙅‍♂️ if anything it sounds like they took advantage of him by deceiving him about the transfer agreement 🤑 all in all, i think victor onopko is a real hero for sticking to his guns despite all the negativity he faced 💪

🤷‍♂️ this is so messed up man... like, who makes decisions based on how someone looks? Cruyff was supposed to be all about innovation and creativity but it sounds like he was just perpetuating some kinda old-school bias 🙄. Onopko's been an iconic figure in Russian football for decades and Barcelona just threw him away over his appearance 😔. It's not fair to the player or the fans who supported him throughout his career 💔.

🤷‍♂️ This is so sad to hear 🙈 about Victor Onopko being turned down by FC Barcelona due to his looks 😔. I mean, who cares about someone's appearance on the pitch? 🏀 He must've had some amazing skills to make it that far in La Liga ⚽️! And what's with Johan Cruyff's reputation for looking beyond conventional looks? 🤔 That's exactly what we need more of in football – diversity and inclusion 🌈. The fact that he ended up becoming a cult hero is awesome 💪, but I wish he would've gotten the recognition he deserved back then 😭. 🏆

man this is crazy 🤯, i cant even imagine being rejected from barcelona because of how you look 😱, victor onopko was like totally a legendary player and now he's saying that johan cruiff just didnt think he fit in with the team vibe 🤷‍♂️. but you know what's wilder? that he was right there to sign with real oviedo but they messed him over too 😡, talk about a rough break 💔.

i feel bad for onopko though, i mean he still went on to have an amazing career and even became a hero in la liga 🙌. and it's interesting that he mentions cruiff being the one who made the decision not to sign him... maybe we should've seen some of that "unique talent" shine through 💫.

anyway, i guess what i'm saying is that this whole story just goes to show how much things can change in your career path and life 🔄. you never know what's gonna happen next 🔮.

OMG I'm literally dyin 🤯, can you believe this?! Victor Onopko was totes robbed 🙄 of a chance at FC Barcelona 😭. Like, who wouldn't want a Russian legend on their squad? 🇷🇺 But noooo, because Johan Cruyff thought he was "ugly" 💁‍♂️. Grrr I hate that someone made fun of his appearance 👎. Onopko's story is literally the most heartbreaking thing I've heard all year ❤️. He deserved so much better than to be judged on how he looks 🤷‍♀️. I'm still rooting for him, and I hope Rostov FC brings home some wins soon 🏆👊

🤕 u no think its sus that fc barcelona passed up viktor onopko because of his looks lol like what kinda club does that? 1st of all he's been playin football for years and hes got skills but bc he dont fit the "barca type"? 🙄 anywaa i feel bad for him, seems like barcelona just didnt want to take a chance on someone who could bring sumthing diffrent 2 the pitch.

🤔 This is wild! Can you imagine being told you're not good enough for a team just because of how you look? I mean, Victor Onopko was already an accomplished player, had experience in La Liga and the Russian national team... what did they see that made them think he wasn't worthy?

I drew a little diagram to illustrate this:

Imagine Cruyff's face in the middle, with a big red X marked through Onopko's name. It just doesn't make sense!

Anyway, I feel bad for Onopko, but at the same time, it's crazy to think that one person's opinion (or lack thereof) could decide someone's career path. 🤷‍♂️
