The Trump administration has been accused of wilful complicity in the torture and abuse of over 250 Venezuelans who were deported from the US to El Salvador. Human Rights Watch and Cristosal, a group investigating violations in Central America, have reported that conditions at El Salvador's Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot) violate the UN's standard minimal rules for the treatment of prisoners.
The report alleges that detainees were subjected to "constant beatings" as well as other forms of ill treatment, including cases of sexual violence. The victims also experienced lengthy incommunicado detention and inadequate food supplies.
It has been claimed that just 3% of the deported Venezuelans had been convicted in the US of a violent crime, contradicting the administration's claim that they were involved with an organized crime gang.
The Trump administration's decision to deport the detainees to El Salvador has been widely criticized as a human rights abuse. The US government has been accused of turning a blind eye to the mistreatment and abuse of these individuals.
