Friday film: How Joel Embiid and an optimized version of the Sixers overcame the Houston Rockets and a blown call

For the Sixers to finally get back on track, they needed a collective effort from their entire roster. Thursday's win over the Houston Rockets in overtime was just that – a testament to the team's depth and resilience.

Joel Embiid stole the show with his 45:36 minutes of playtime, eclipsing Tyrese Maxey's season-high total by nearly nine minutes. It was a career-defining performance from the dominant center, who continued to assert himself against smaller defenders. Despite some shaky plays in the fourth quarter, Embiid remained focused and determined, leveraging his size and strength to generate open looks for Maxey.

The question on everyone's mind after Thursday night was how much Embiid should be playing going forward. In a candid post-game interview, coach Nick Nurse declared that 45 minutes of playtime is a significant milestone for the center. Embiid had topped out at just under 36 minutes in regulation before Thursday, but now he seems to be ready for more.

In order to get the most out of their talented young core, the Sixers need to find ways to optimize their lineups and make adjustments on the fly. A big part of that will involve getting Paul George involved more on both ends of the floor. While George has been struggling with foul trouble in recent games, he was able to find his groove again down the stretch, scoring 10 points and making several clutch defensive plays.

Kelly Oubre Jr., who replaced Dominick Barlow in the starting lineup, added 26 points and brought a spark offensively that's been missing from the team lately. It's clear that Nurse is looking for more consistency on both ends of the floor from his players, particularly with Maxey emerging as the new leader of the team.

With a six-game winning streak under their belts, the Sixers are starting to look like a cohesive unit again. Embiid, George, Oubre, Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe appear to be the five best players on the roster right now. As Nurse continues to tweak his lineup and adjust his strategy, it's likely that we'll see more of these talented young players shine in the weeks to come.

The big question is whether this winning streak will carry over into the rest of the season. The Sixers still have a tough schedule ahead of them, but with Embiid playing at an elite level and George stepping up his defensive game, it's hard not to feel optimistic about their chances. One thing is for sure – with their talented young core leading the way, this team is well-equipped to make a deep playoff run.

For now, it's all about finding that next gear and sustaining this winning streak. As Embiid himself put it after Thursday night's game: "Maybe I should have a baby on Jan. 22." Whatever motivates him, the results are undeniable – the Sixers are back on track, and Joel Embiid is leading the way.

aww yay!! i'm so hyped for our sixers!!! 🤩 joel embiid is literally unstoppable 💪 he's been carrying this team to wins and his performance last night was amazing!! 45 minutes of playtime? that's insane! 🤯 tyrese maxey had an incredible season-high total too, and it's clear that the chemistry between them is strong 🔥 paul george stepping up on defense is everything we need to see for this team to succeed 💪 kelly oubre jr is bringing a spark offensively and it's so cool to see the young core shine! 🌟 can't wait to see what's next for these sixers... they're definitely on fire 🔥💥

I'm glad to see the Sixers finally getting their act together 💪🏽! But, gotta wonder, what's the plan for Paul George? He's been struggling with fouls lately, but when he's on, he's unstoppable 🔥. Need him to be more consistent and I think we'll be golden. Also, love how coach Nurse is pushing Kelly Oubre Jr. to bring that spark 🌟, it's been missing from the team. Embiid's performance was insane though! 45 minutes of playtime is a lot, hope he can keep up this pace without burning out 🔥💦. Can't wait to see if this winning streak carries over into the rest of the season 🤞

Omg yaaas 🤩 the Sixers r finally getting it together!!! 👏 they need to keep up tho 💪 Embiid is on 🔥 45 minutes of playtime tho?!?! 😲 he's like a whole different player 😎 and george needs more min too 🤷‍♂️ Oubre Jr is bringing that fire 🔥 too, need more consistency tho 👀 maxey is leadin the team tho 💪 edgecombe is gettin in the mix 👍

they gotta keep it up tho 💯 6 game win streak and all that 💥 coach nurse needs to adjust his strategy tho 🤔 george needs more time on D too 🔒 but overall r feeling hyped for these youngins 👀

⚡️ finally getting that big win against Houston was a huge confidence booster for the team 🎉. now they just gotta keep it going and see how far this momentum takes them 😏. also love how embiid took his game to the next level, that 45 mins of playtime isn't surprising but its about consistency 👍

😂 that was hilarious! Embiid's joke about having a baby in January had me dying 🤣, but seriously though, he's been ON FIRE lately! 45 minutes of playtime for him? That's crazy talk 💥. I mean, can't imagine how hard he must be pushing himself, especially on both ends of the court. And yeah, it's about time we see more of George and Oubre Jr. making moves too 🤔. The young core is starting to gel, and I love seeing Maxey take it up a notch as well 👏. Now, can they keep this momentum going? They've got some tough games ahead but with that squad, I wouldn't put my money on 'em 😊

I'm so over how long Joel Embiid has been playing in games lol 🤣 45 minutes is crazy, like what's next? A whole game by himself? 😂 And can we talk about Paul George for a sec? He's always getting hurt or struggling with foul trouble, it's like the universe is against him 🙄 but seriously though, when he's on his game, he's UNSTOPPABLE 🔥

I think Embiid played like 35 minutes last night not 45 🤔. Still, that's an awesome win for the Sixers! They need to keep finding ways to get Paul George more involved, though - he was clutch in the fourth quarter and had a few big defensive plays. The bench has been looking pretty strong lately too, with Oubre Jr bringing some much-needed energy 🌟. It's gonna be tough for them to keep this winning streak going with their schedule, but they've got the talent to do it 👍.

omg u guys can feel the energy in philly rn!!!! the sixers r finally gettin it together after that weird stretch lol 45 min of playtime for embiid was EVERYTHING i mean i know coach nurse said its a significant milestone but cmon how did he even get to that point??? it just shows how much hard work & dedication he put in during the offseason 🤯 and what about paul george tho?? i feel like hes been on the bubble all season & now hes finally gettin his groove back down the stretch 10 points & clutch defensive plays? yeah please coach nurse u gotta give him more mins ASAP 🙌 kelly oure Jr. brought that fire offensively too we need to see more of these sparkly moments from our young core and vj edgecombe is straight up ballin 💪

🤔 so I'm thinking 45 minutes of playtime for joel embiid is actually kinda low. i mean he's been playing like a 40+ minute guy all season already, it's only logical that coach nick nurse would want to give him even more time on the court. and let's be real, it's not just about how much he plays, but also how well he can maintain his level of performance over a full game. 9 minutes more than maxey is actually kinda cute...

🏀 they're finally getting their act together 👍 but it's about more than just one player shining bright paul george needs to step up his game on defense 🚫 can't let those easy baskets turn into points in the paint 26 from oubre jr is nice, but what about the rest of the team? maxey's gotta keep that energy going 👊

I'm not sure if 45 minutes of playtime for Embiid is a good thing or not 😐... I mean, he was dominating out there, but shouldn't he be getting more rest? On one hand, it's awesome to see him playing so well and asserting himself against smaller defenders 🤩. But on the other hand, all that extra time could lead to fatigue and injury issues down the line 🤕. And what about George struggling with foul trouble in recent games? Shouldn't we be worried about him getting into more trouble instead of trying to get more out of him? 🤔 It's like Nurse is saying, "Hey, let's try to cram more onto this guy," but maybe that's not the best strategy 💪.

Embiid's performance was insane 😲, but coach Nurse needs to figure out how to balance his minutes with the rest of the team...it's not fair to the other players when he's getting that much PT 🤔. And George has been having some major foul issues lately...I hope they work on his defense so we can see more of him contributing 🚫💪

the key takeaway from this win is that depth matters in basketball 🏀... when you got players like paul george who can step up their game, it makes a huge difference. we should take note of how coach nick nurse is making adjustments to get his players more involved - it's not just about individual talent, but also about chemistry and trust among teammates 💡

the sixers are looking like a well-oiled machine again 🤖 it's awesome to see joel embiid asserting himself on the court and tyrese maxey emerging as a leader 🌟 however, coach nick nurse needs to find ways to get paul george more involved in the game, he's been struggling with foul trouble but was clutch down the stretch 💪 kelly ouubre jr is definitely bringing some much-needed energy offensively though, now we just gotta see if they can keep this winning streak going into the rest of the season 🤔

the sixers win one game doesn't mean they're done for the season 🤔 what if they just got lucky against the rockets lol maybe paul george wasnt even paying attention in that game he had some decent plays but let's not get ahead of ourselves here 👀

I'm loving how the Sixers are finally coming together 💪! It's great to see players like Paul George finding his footing again after some rough patches 🤕. And let's be real, who else can rock a 45-minute game from Joel Embiid? 😮 That guy is an absolute beast on the court! The win over Houston was huge and it's awesome that their young core is starting to gel – Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe are really shining 💫. Now they just need to keep this momentum going and see how far they can take it 🔜

idk how long this winning streak will last lol 😂 they've been playing pretty well but their schedule gets really tough soon 🤯 got my fingers crossed they can keep it up tho 👍
