Google has inked a deal with Reliance Industries' AI-focused subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence, to offer its Gemini AI platform for free to customers on Jio's Unlimited 5G plan. The move aims to further Google's global ambitions in the AI space and bolster its presence in India, one of the country's largest tech markets.
As part of the agreement, users signing up for Jio's Unlimited 5G plan will have access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, an advanced AI model that promises enhanced capabilities in areas such as image and video generation, as well as expanded access to NotebookLM. Additionally, users will benefit from higher limits on these features and 2TB of cloud storage across Google's apps.
The offer is initially exclusive to Jio customers aged 18-25 but is set to expand to all eligible users via the MyJio app in the future. This move underscores India's growing importance as a key battleground for AI expansion, with rival carriers Bharti Airtel and others also launching initiatives to tap into the country's vast consumer base.
Google has reportedly purchased a 7.7% stake in Jio worth $4.5 million in 2020, underscoring its strategic investment in the Indian telecom sector. As OpenAI continues to aggressively expand its presence in India with its ChatGPT platform, Google is now taking a more integrated approach by offering its own AI capabilities at no extra cost.
The value of this deal for users is substantial, with an estimated total worth of around 35,100 rupees ($396) per user over the course of 18 months. This move positions Google as a significant player in India's burgeoning AI landscape and sets it up for continued growth in the country.
