Green whisky? Scottish distillery tests eco-friendly aluminium bottles

Scotland's Distilleries Are Taking on the Green Revolution with Eco-Friendly Whisky Bottles Made from Aluminium

For centuries, Scotch whisky has been synonymous with amber-hued bottles that sit proudly on shelves in Scotland's bars, restaurants, and hotels. But what if this traditional packaging isn't as green as we thought? A small Scottish distillery is taking a bold step towards sustainability by testing eco-friendly aluminium bottles for its malt whisky.

The move is part of a growing trend in the spirits industry to reduce carbon emissions and shift away from glass bottles. According to research, recycling aluminium has better environmental credentials than both new and recycled glass, as well as plastic bottles. However, some whisky enthusiasts may be skeptical about the aesthetic appeal and commercial viability of aluminium bottles.

Stirling Distillery is working with scientists at Heriot-Watt University to test the safety and effectiveness of its aluminium bottles. The initial findings suggest that while younger consumers might be more open to eco-friendly packaging, there are still concerns around the potential health risks of drinking whisky from an aluminium bottle. Traces of aluminium had leached into the whisky in laboratory tests, raising questions about the lining used in the test bottles.

The researchers are now calling for further evaluation and testing with better-lining bottles to ensure that the spirit's chemical make-up isn't altered by contact with the aluminium. Dr Dave Ellis from Heriot-Watt University said, "We don't know if there is a commercially available aluminium can that has a liner capable of handling whisky-strength spirits."

Despite these concerns, some distilleries are already experimenting with eco-friendly packaging. The Isle of Harris Distillery trialled refills of its gin in aluminium several years ago, and a Scottish producer called Ogilvy sells its potato vodka in aluminium flasks that can be repurposed as water bottles.

As the industry continues to grapple with changing consumer tastes and pressure to reduce carbon emissions, it will be interesting to see how Stirling Distillery's experiments unfold. One thing is certain: if eco-friendly packaging becomes the new standard for whisky bottles, Scotland may just become a pioneer in the green revolution of the spirits world.

For now, the industry remains divided on the issue. Ron MacEachran, the executive chair of Harris Distillery, said its trials of aluminium bottles for gin refills "certainly had an audience," but added that aesthetic and commercial reasons still make glass bottles more appealing for whisky.

The future of whisky packaging is uncertain, but one thing is clear: Scotland's distilleries are ready to take a stand on sustainability. Will Stirling Distillery's eco-friendly aluminium bottles be the start of something special, or just a fleeting trend? Only time will tell.

i think its cool that scottish distilleries are trying out eco-friendly packaging ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š its not about making things look old-fashioned but actually reducing our impact on the planet. i mean, aluminium bottles might not be as pretty as glass ones but they do have better environmental credentials ๐Ÿ’ก and if we can make spirits from them safely without affecting the whisky's taste then thats a win for everyone ๐Ÿธ. still gotta hear more about how safe these bottles are though, cant just rush into something like that ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I mean, think about it, when I was younger, we used to drink from glass bottles and not even bat an eyelid... now you're telling me these Scottish distilleries are testing out eco-friendly aluminium bottles for whisky? It's like they're trying to make whisky more accessible, but at the same time, some people might be worried about the aluminium leaching into the whisky. ๐Ÿค” I remember my grandfather used to drink whisky from a flask made of metal, and it was never an issue back then... maybe this is just a matter of tradition? ๐Ÿšฎ

I'm soooo hyped about this! ๐Ÿคฉ Scotland's distilleries taking the lead on sustainability is everything and more! I mean, who doesn't want to save the planet while sipping on some delicious whisky, am I right? ๐Ÿ’š The fact that they're experimenting with eco-friendly aluminium bottles is a total game-changer. And, let's be real, if it's good enough for gin refills, it should definitely work for whisky too! ๐Ÿค” Ogilvy selling its vodka in aluminium flasks as water bottles is genius โ€“ I need one of those ASAP! ๐Ÿ’ฆ Can't wait to see how Stirling Distillery's experiments unfold and whether we'll be sipping on eco-friendly whisky in no time ๐Ÿคž

I'm low-key obsessed with this new eco-friendly whisky bottle idea ๐Ÿคฏ! As a student, I've seen how our schools are trying to reduce waste and carbon emissions too, so it's awesome to see distilleries taking action too. The fact that Scotland might be a pioneer in this is pretty cool, you know?

But at the same time, I get why some people might be skeptical about aluminium bottles... like, what if they're not safe for drinking from? ๐Ÿค” Stirling Distillery needs to keep testing and finding better solutions. And can you imagine if our school's cafeteria starts using eco-friendly packaging too? That would be a game-changer for sustainability efforts! ๐Ÿ’š

I'm also kinda curious about the whole "youth vs tradition" vibe going on in this article ๐Ÿ˜‚. Like, older generations might be attached to glass bottles because they're familiar with them, but younger people are all about trying new things and being eco-friendly. Maybe Stirling Distillery can help bridge that gap? ๐Ÿค

You know what's crazy about these new eco-friendly packaging trends? Like I was at this bar the other day and they had these reusable straws that you could return to get a discount on your next drink ๐Ÿคฏ And then it hit me, if we're already using those in bars, why not use aluminium bottles for whisky too? It's like, think about it, all these distilleries are just trying to make their products sound more sustainable than they actually are ๐Ÿ˜‚. I mean, have you ever seen a whisky tasting event? Those guys are always drinking from tiny glass cups and then spilling the whole thing on themselves... it's like, what's the point of that packaging if we're still gonna be making a mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm intrigued by this Scottish distillery that's trying out eco-friendly aluminum bottles for their malt whisky ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก It's cool to see them taking steps towards sustainability, but I do have some concerns about the aesthetic appeal and potential health risks of drinking from an aluminum bottle ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿ‘€ At the same time, I'm all for reducing carbon emissions and exploring new options for packaging. Maybe it'll take a few more trials and experiments before we can say for sure if this is a game-changer or just a novelty ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒฟ

I dont get why they need to change bottles like thats gonna make a diffrence ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿธ u know what would be cool tho? if they made those eco friendly bottles for every kind of drink not just whisky ๐Ÿ˜‚ and also can we talk about how much i love gins refills in aluminium flasks ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’š

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ this is so interesting! I mean, can you imagine walking into your local pub and ordering a dram from a sleek, modern aluminium bottle instead of that classic glass one? It's a bold move by the distillery, and while there are some concerns about the health risks, it's great to see them taking steps towards sustainability. And hey, who knows, maybe it'll become the new standard for whisky bottles! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm not sure about these new eco-friendly aluminium bottles for whisky yet ๐Ÿค”. I mean, I love Scotland and all, but there are some valid concerns about them. Like how do they know it's safe to drink from an aluminium bottle that's been tested with a different spirit? And what if the lining in the bottle leaches into the whisky at a different rate or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I remember when I first heard about refills in aluminium, like the gin trials on the Isle of Harris Distillery, and it seemed kinda cool. But now that there are more distilleries jumping on board, I'm not so sure... ๐Ÿ’ก Maybe they'll figure out a way to make it work, but for now, I'd rather stick with glass bottles ๐Ÿ“ฆ.

It's good to see them experimenting though, and who knows maybe we'll have some innovative solutions soon! ๐Ÿ’ป Fingers crossed that these eco-friendly options don't end up in the bin due to consumer skepticism ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

I think it's awesome that some Scottish distilleries are taking bold steps towards reducing their carbon footprint ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿธ. Using eco-friendly materials like aluminium for whisky bottles is definitely a good move, but I'm curious to see how they'll address the concerns about potential health risks and chemical leaching ๐Ÿ’Š. Maybe they can find a better lining or material that's safer for our spirits ๐Ÿค”. I love the idea of repurposing flasks as water bottles too - it's like closing the loop on sustainability ๐Ÿ”„. Fingers crossed Stirling Distillery's experiments will pave the way for more sustainable packaging in the whisky world ๐Ÿ’š. Can't wait to see what the future holds! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think its kinda cool that Scotch whisky distilleries are trying out new ways to reduce their carbon footprint ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š. But I'm curious about this whole Aluminium bottle thing... some people might not like the look of it ๐Ÿ˜. And what's up with the lining in these test bottles? Shouldn't they be testing with real aluminium bottles, not fake ones? ๐Ÿค”

It's interesting that there are still distilleries who don't think eco-friendly packaging is worth it, but I feel Scotland might lead the way on this one ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ. The fact that some of these distilleries have already experimented with aluminium flasks or refills shows there's interest in sustainability.

For Stirling Distillery, it'll be interesting to see how their experiments go down... and if younger consumers will actually like the new packaging ๐Ÿ’ก. Will this become a thing? Only time will tell ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I think it's dope that Scotland's distilleries are stepping up their game when it comes to reducing waste and going green ๐ŸŒฟ. Like, who wouldn't want to drink from an eco-friendly aluminium bottle ๐Ÿ˜Ž. The fact that Stirling Distillery is working with scientists to get the kinks out and create a liner that won't affect the whisky's taste or quality is super cool ๐Ÿ’ก. And I'm loving the idea of repurposing these bottles as water flasks ๐Ÿคฉ.

At first, I thought it would be weird drinking from an aluminium bottle, but now I see it as a no-brainer ๐Ÿ™Œ. People are already going green in other ways, so why not their whiskey too? ๐Ÿธ I mean, we're living in a time where reusable straws and bamboo toothbrushes are all the rage ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's definitely good to have some whisky enthusiasts speaking out about the concerns, though ๐Ÿ˜. We don't want any potential health risks or altered flavor profiles ๐Ÿค•. But overall, I'm hyped to see Scotland leading the charge on sustainability in the spirits industry ๐ŸŽ‰. Bring on the eco-friendly packaging and let's make a change for the better ๐Ÿ’–

I'm loving this ๐Ÿคฉ idea of switching from glass to aluminium bottles for whisky! I mean, think about it - recycling aluminium is way better than glass and plastic ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š. And let's be real, the environmental impact of the spirits industry can't be ignored ๐Ÿ“‰.

But, what's up with some distilleries being a bit skeptical about the aesthetic appeal? Like, come on guys, a little creativity never hurt anyone! ๐Ÿ˜‚ You could do something cool like a custom design or even a reusable aluminium cap ๐Ÿ’ก. And if it's not viable for commercial use, that's a small price to pay for the sake of the planet ๐ŸŒŸ.

I'm also intrigued by the research being done on the lining used in test bottles ๐Ÿ‘€. Maybe they can find a way to make it work or develop a new technology that's just as effective but safer ๐Ÿ”ฌ.

It'll be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out, and if Stirling Distillery's experiments become the new standard for whisky bottles ๐Ÿค”. Either way, I think we're on the right track ๐Ÿ’š.

I think it's awesome that Scottish distilleries are trying out eco-friendly packaging for their whisky. I mean, let's be real, glass bottles are nice and all, but they're not exactly the most sustainable option. Aluminium is a great alternative - recycling it has way better environmental credentials than glass or plastic.

I'm curious to see how Stirling Distillery's experiments go, especially with the testing for aluminium lining. Safety first, right? If it means their whisky tastes different, that's a bummer. But if it helps reduce carbon emissions and makes them more sustainable, then I'm all for it!

It'll be interesting to see what other distilleries come up with in terms of eco-friendly packaging. Maybe we'll see more aluminium bottles, or even biodegradable options? The future of whisky is exciting! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’š

Aluminium bottles for whisky? Yeah right ๐Ÿค”... like it's gonna stick. Distilleries think they're being all green and sustainable but what about the resale value of these fancy eco-friendly bottles? Who's gonna want to buy a bottle that's basically just an old tin can? And what's with this "sustainable" hype? They'll just recycle it and start again, so I don't see any real change here ๐Ÿ“ฆ. And those concerns over aluminium leaching into the whisky... nice try trying to scare people off from going green ๐Ÿ˜’. It's all just marketing nonsense anyway ๐Ÿ’ธ

I think it's a bit weird that they're testing aluminium bottles for whisky, I mean, aren't whisky and water kind of different things? Like, you wouldn't put water in an old tin can from a soda. But at the same time, if it's better for the environment than glass or plastic, that's gotta be good news ๐Ÿค”

I think this change in packaging could go either way ๐Ÿค”. I mean, who doesn't love the idea of reducing waste and being more eco-friendly? But at the same time, there's some valid concerns about the material and how it affects the taste of the whisky...or is it? ๐Ÿธ Maybe it'll be a game-changer for the industry and Scotland becomes known as a leader in sustainable packaging. Wouldn't that be awesome? ๐Ÿ˜Š The fact that some distilleries are already experimenting with alternative materials shows that there's still interest in eco-friendly options, so fingers crossed this won't just be a flash in the pan ๐Ÿ’š

I'm not sure if I'd want to drink whisky from an aluminium bottle yet... I mean, it sounds like there might be some health concerns. Like what if the aluminium is, you know, getting into the whisky? ๐Ÿค” But at the same time, I can see why they're trying to make it more eco-friendly - all that glass packaging isn't exactly good for the planet either. ๐ŸŒŽ

I'm still on the fence about whether aluminium bottles are a good idea or not. Maybe they just need to work out some kinks with the lining and stuff. But hey, if Scotland's distilleries can make it work, that'd be pretty cool! ๐Ÿ˜Š
