"He said 'I can't breathe'": Medical examiner likely to call ICE detainee death a homicide

Medical Examiner Set to Label Detainee's Death as Homicide in ICE Custody

A Texas medical examiner appears poised to rule that the death of a 55-year-old Cuban detainee, who died after struggling with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) staff, was a homicide. The medical examiner is waiting on toxicology results but believes the cause of death was asphyxia due to neck and chest compression.

According to an employee's phone call with Campos' daughter, the medical office likely classifies his death at Camp Montana East as a homicide, following a struggle that led to Campos losing consciousness and ultimately dying. The office has determined the preliminary cause of death, but is awaiting further results before making the official determination.

ICE initially reported that Campos attempted "to take his life" and violently resisted staff during the struggle. However, a detainee who claimed to be in the same unit as Campos disputes this account, stating that guards began choking him, prompting Campos to cry out "No puedo respirar," or "I can't breathe." The man claims he heard Campos' voice stop after he cried for help.

The death marks the second at Camp Montana East and the fourth ICE detainee death so far in 2026. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of detainees in ICE custody, including reports of inadequate medical care and excessive use of force by staff.

๐Ÿค• this is so messed up how can u treat someone like that in a detention centre? its just not right they need better training on de-escalation tactics and also more support for their mental health its not just about the physical harm u cause but the trauma it leaves behind ๐Ÿšจ

I'm literally shook by this news ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Like, who gets killed while trying to get medical attention? It's so messed up how these ICE folks are treating people like they're disposable ๐Ÿšฎ. I just wanna know what was going on that day and why Campos wasn't getting the help he needed. And now it seems like his death is gonna be labeled as a homicide... it's like, justice for him, you feel? ๐Ÿ˜” But seriously, we need to keep pushing for change so this kind of thing never happens again ๐Ÿค. We gotta stand with the people who are already marginalized and vulnerable ๐Ÿ’–.

ICE gotta do better ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’” Detainees r human beings too u no ๐Ÿ˜” Can't believe they're tryna say it was just a struggle ๐Ÿ’ช when Campos' own friend said guards were choking him ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ˜ฑ That toxicology report's gonna show who's lyin' ๐Ÿ‘€ Not cool that ICE is tryna cover this up ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ผ Hope the medical examiner gets it right and labels it as a homicide ๐Ÿ’ฅ Justice 4 Campos! โค๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I'm not buying all this hype around Campos' death being ruled a homicide ๐Ÿšซ. Yeah, toxicology results are coming out, but what if they show something completely different? And have you seen the initial report from ICE? "He tried to take his life" ๐Ÿ’€? Sounds like a pretty convenient spin to me ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Detainees in ICE custody are already facing a lot of trauma and stress, do we really need to jump to conclusions about what happened here? Maybe we should wait for the whole investigation before making judgments ๐Ÿ‘Š. It's all so... hasty ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ just saw this news and I'm like what is going on with these detention centers?! ๐Ÿšซ they're supposed to be protecting people's lives not taking them away like that ๐Ÿ˜ข 55yo dude struggling in his cell and next thing you know he's dead...asphyxia due to compression sounds super harsh ๐Ÿ’” I don't think we're hearing enough about this stuff in the media, every life lost is a tragedy ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ I'm guessing it's gonna be a huge scandal now and there'll be some serious changes made ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ check out this article from NY Times - https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/15/us/ice-detention-death-camp-montana-east.html?ref=gl&moc=1

Ugh, this is so disturbing ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I cant believe what's happening to people who are already in a vulnerable situation. Camp Montana East needs an overhaul ASAP. ICE needs to take responsibility for the lives of these detainees. It's not okay that they're being subjected to excessive force and inadequate medical care. We need to see more accountability for these actions, like some sort of investigation or even prosecution if necessary. The fact that a detainee is willing to speak out against what happened is a testament to how bad it really is... and I'm sure we've only heard half the story ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿšจ I'm really worried about these cases... it's like, what even is going on at these detention centers?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ They're supposed to be taking care of people, not putting them in harm's way. Toxicology results might take time but knowing the cause of death is asphyxia due to compression makes me sick ๐Ÿคข. What kind of environment are they trying to create? I'm thinking it's gotta be related to those allegations of inadequate medical care and excessive force... anyway, my heart goes out to Campos' family - hope justice gets served ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ‘ฎ

ugh this is just great another innocent life lost to a system that's already proven to be pretty messed up ๐Ÿค• ICE has got some serious explaining to do here. Like, what even is "attempting to take his life"? sounds like they're trying to cover their own behinds ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ and now we've got a mom who's gonna have to live with the fact that her son died in custody? not cool at all ๐Ÿ˜” and the whole thing about Campos calling out for help, only for nobody to come and save him? it's like they were just waiting for someone to die so they wouldn't have to deal with the consequences ๐Ÿ™„ the medical examiner is basically saying that Campos' death was a homicide because of how he died, which I guess makes sense, but what about all the other stuff that went down in his final moments? did anyone even care that he was struggling for air? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿšจ I'm so sick of these "honest" statements from the gov't. Like they're trying to spin this as Campos' fault? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ No way, man. ICE needs some serious accountability for what's going down in those detention centers. This isn't just about one dude dying, it's a pattern of behavior that's been ignored for far too long. Toxicology results might confirm it, but I'm pretty sure the medical examiner already knows what happened - Campos was killed, plain and simple. ๐Ÿ˜ก

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm soooo shocked! Like, what even is going on over at Camp Montana East?! ๐Ÿค” It's like, totally unacceptable that some poor dude has to go through that kinda trauma just 'cause he's trying to get his life together in the States. ๐Ÿ˜” And now he's dead? ๐Ÿ’€ That's just heartbreaking.

I'm not surprised though, tbh... I've seen some pretty disturbing vids of people getting mistreated by ICE and it's just, like, gross ๐Ÿคข. We need to be more aware of these issues and make sure that we're speaking out against them. ๐Ÿ’– Like, how hard is it to treat ppl with dignity and respect? ๐Ÿ™„ It's not rocket science, fam! ๐Ÿš€

Anywayz, I'm just soooo glad that there's finally someone who's gonna get justice for Carlos Campos ๐Ÿ‘Š. His family deserves so much better than what they got ๐Ÿ’”. We gotta keep pushing for change and making sure that our voices are heard ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.
