Hochul seeks to end local NY law enforcement agreements with ICE, citing ‘tyranny’

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans to introduce a bill that would prohibit local law enforcement agencies from collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the federal 287(g) program. The move comes as tensions over immigration enforcement continue to rise, particularly after two people were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis last month.

Hochul's proposal aims to end the formal agreements between ICE and local police departments, but would still allow officers to assist federal authorities in apprehending criminals and providing crowd control. However, advocates for stricter limits on cooperation with ICE say that this measure is insufficient and urge Hochul to support a more comprehensive bill that would block state and local officers from enforcing federal immigration laws.

The move has sparked opposition from Republican county executives who currently have 287(g) agreements in place. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the GOP's gubernatorial candidate, called Hochul's proposal "the most pro-criminal governor in the United States" and vowed to veto it if it reaches his desk.

Despite the pushback, Hochul's announcement has been welcomed by many immigrant rights groups, which see it as a step towards countering President Trump's immigration crackdown. However, local officials in Rensselaer County, where a 287(g) agreement was first established, have vowed to continue participating in the program, citing the importance of identifying and processing undocumented immigrants.

As the debate over immigration enforcement continues, Hochul's proposal highlights the complexities and challenges of balancing national security concerns with the rights and interests of immigrant communities.

OMG I'm literally shaking thinking about how crazy this is 🤯! So like, Kathy Hochul is trying to make NY a safe space for all immigrants and it's super admirable 💖... but at the same time, I can see why some people are all upset because of the whole 287(g) thing 🤔. My cousin's aunt is actually from El Salvador and she got detained by ICE like, 5 years ago and it was literally a nightmare 😱. So yeah, I think Hochul's proposal is a good start, but we need to see more change ASAP 🚀... meanwhile, my friend's brother just got married and he's from Mexico and they're literally talking about starting a family 🤰🏼... anyway, this whole thing has me thinking a lot about our immigration system and how it affects the people who are living here 💭.

I think this is a great step towards prioritizing people over politics... 🤝 It's about time we recognize that our local law enforcement should be focused on keeping us safe, not chasing after undocumented immigrants who are just trying to survive 💕. We need to create a more compassionate system where everyone can feel welcome and respected, regardless of their immigration status.

idk about this new bill from Hochul 🤔👀, sounds like it's a step in the right direction, but i feel like it's only half-measured 🚫💪, what about all the local cops who wanna do more to help out ICE? don't get me wrong, i get where the advocates for stricter limits are coming from, but at the same time, it can be super scary when people are walking around worried they're gonna get deported just 'cause of a traffic stop 😬💨... anyhoo, Nassau County Exec Bruce Blakeman is being super dramatic about this 🙄👊, and i'm just like, chill dude 🤷‍♂️, it's just a proposal, let's see how it plays out 💭

"y'know what's wild about this whole thing? how some ppl get so worked up just 'cause someone's tryna protect their community from gettin' caught & deported like that's a bad thing 🤷‍♂️. newsflash: immigrants are human beings too, with families & hopes for a better life. we need more leaders like Kathy Hochul who actually care about people's lives rather than just pollyanna-ish promises of 'keeping us safe'" 😊

Ugh man, it feels like we're right back where we started with these debates 🤯... I mean, remember when the whole 287(g) program was first introduced back in the day? It's crazy how things come full circle like that. And now Kathy Hochul is trying to shut it down, but it still feels like a watered-down version if you ask me 🤷‍♂️... I mean, what happened to just getting rid of this whole program for good? But at the same time, I get why some folks want to keep it in place, especially with all these immigration issues swirling around. And Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is being super dramatic about it too 🙄... like, come on dude, can't we just find a middle ground here?

idk why Hochul cant just block all ties with ICE 2 b real 🤔. this bill she announced is like a half-measure, u feel? its like she's trying 2 appease everyone but still not go far enough. those republican county execs are straight up trolling her btw. and i get why immigrant rights groups r hyped but we gotta think about the bigger pic too 🤷‍♀️. what happens when there r more cities & states like this one that decide 2 take a stand? does it create a domino effect or just lead 2 more conflict? 💡

🙌 I'm loving Kathy Hochul's move on this! It's about time we see some concrete action on reforming these 287(g) programs that have been causing so much stress for our communities. I mean, who wants to live in fear of getting caught up in a system that's supposed to be about keeping us safe? 💕 But seriously, it's all about finding that balance and prioritizing human rights over national security concerns. Let's hope more states follow suit and create some real change! 🌟

🤔 think this is a big step forward for NY state 🎉 especially after what happened in Minneapolis last month 😔 it's about time we start putting people over politics, you know? 👍 Hochul's proposal may not be perfect, but at least it's a start and who knows maybe it'll inspire other states to follow suit 🤞

and honestly I'm with the immigrant rights groups on this one 💖 they're fighting for their lives and their families deserve our support 🌟 but we also need to make sure that law enforcement is able to do its job without being threatened by politicians who don't care about the community 🙅‍♂️ gotta find a balance, right? 😊

I'm low-key impressed by Kathy Hochul's move on this 🤔. I mean, it's a step in the right direction for sure! The whole thing feels super complicated, but at the end of the day, you gotta consider what's best for your constituents. It's like that scene from Inception where Cobb is all torn between his reality and his dreams - it's a tough call, but someone's gotta make it 🤯. Some people are already hating on Hochul, calling her "pro-criminal" which is just wild 😂, but I think she's trying to find that balance. It's not a total cop-out, like in the movie Minority Report where Tom Cruise's character has to solve crimes without knowing who he'll be in 30 years 🕰️. Whatever happens next is gonna be super interesting!

😕 I feel like we're still stuck on this immigration stuff... it's just not that simple. Our local police should be focused on keeping us safe, not enforcing federal laws about who lives here or when they have to leave. Can't we just treat everyone with some respect and dignity? 💔

ICE is a total joke 🤣. Can't believe they're still trying to enforce those outdated laws. I mean, come on, we've got people living in this country without papers just trying to survive. It's time for some common sense 🙏. I love that Hochul is taking a stand and maybe, just maybe, it'll inspire other governors to follow suit 💪. But seriously, those Republicans are out of touch 🤦‍♂️. Who needs 287(g) anyway? It's just creating more problems than it solves 🚮. And what's with the GOP candidate calling Hochul "pro-criminal"? Give me a break 😒. We need more people in office who actually care about the little guy, not just lining the pockets of big corporations 💸. Anyway, I'm all for it – bring on the bill!

Imagine a big puzzle 🤔, with pieces that are super important: National Security 🛡️, Immigrant Rights 🌎, and Local Control 💪. Right now, it's hard to see which piece fits where.

Kathy Hochul wants to break the 287(g) deal between local police and ICE (which is like a big puzzle piece on the side of national security). But some people think that's not enough 🤷‍♀️. They want an even bigger change, so that local cops can't help federal agents catch bad guys or control crowds.

Bruce Blakeman (the Republican candidate) thinks Hochul's idea is "pro-criminal" 😒 and says he'll veto it if it gets to his desk. But many immigrant groups see this as a step forward 🌈, because it shows they're being listened to.

It's like trying to draw a diagram of the whole puzzle 🎨... some pieces are easy to see (like national security), but others are harder to understand (like how local control fits in). We need to keep talking and finding ways to make this work 💬.

ICE is literally terrorizing these communities, and it's about time some governor steps up to stop it 🚫💔. I mean, what's next? The cops are already traumatized by that Minneapolis shooting, can't imagine how many more they'll be dealing with if we keep letting ICE just barge in whenever they want. We need a comprehensive bill, not just a watered-down version like Hochul is proposing 🤦‍♀️. And those Republican county execs who are opposing it? Just trying to protect their own interests and keep the status quo, no matter how many people suffer as a result 💸.

🤔 I'm all for this move, but like, we gotta be careful not to create a power vacuum or anything 🚨. I mean, what if we're supposed to be helping out our feds in keeping people safe? But at the same time, we can't just sit back and let ICE run wild 🤯. It's all about finding that balance, you know? And what's up with these county execs who are trying to block this bill? Can't they see how it affects their own communities 👥? I'm down for more comprehensive legislation, but like, steps in the right direction, ya feel me? 💪

🤔 just thinking about this 🤷‍♀️ its like a big mess 💥 local cops are already getting heat for helping out ICE 🚨 they're trying to do their job but at what cost? 😩 Hochul's plan is a good start but imo its not enough 🙅‍♂️ we need to see more support from lawmakers for immigrant rights 🤝 and less drama between pols 🗣️ Blakeman's reaction tho? 😒 cant believe hes playing the pro-criminal card 🚫 Nassau County Exec should focus on his own county instead of trying to stir up trouble 🤦‍♂️ Rensselaer Co. needs to rethink their 287(g) agreement ASAP 🔄 we gotta protect our communities 👥👏

this is a big deal for the ppl living in nyc... i feel like governor hochul r tryin to make a statement against the trump admin's stance on immigration... but at the same time, u gotta understand where local law enforcement comes from - they wanna keep their community safe too 🤔. it's all about balance, right? some ppl will be happy with this new bill, while others will be like "what about our rights?" 🙄

I'm so done with politicians pretending to care about people's lives when they're just playing politics 🙄. Like, if you're gonna announce a bill that's supposed to protect people, can't you at least be honest about what it really means? 🤷‍♀️ This proposal is like, "Hey, we'll let local cops help ICE catch bad guys, but only not too much" - sounds like a total cop-out (no pun intended) 😒. I mean, if you wanna crack down on crime, why can't you just do it without putting people's lives at risk? It's like, can't we find a way to keep everyone safe without making them feel like they're walking on eggshells all the time? 🤯

OMG 🤯 I'm literally so stoked about Kathy Hochul's announcement!!! 🎉 She's finally taking a stand against that toxic 287(g) program! 😡 It's like, come on, who needs federal agents making our cops do their dirty work? 🚫 My friends and I have been talking about this for ages - how ICE has no business telling our local law enforcement what to do. And yeah, some people are saying her proposal isn't enough, but like, every little bit counts, right? 💪 We just need to keep pushing for stricter limits on cooperation with ICE. The fact that those Rensselaer County officials are still down with the program is wild 🤯 - I guess you can't teach some people how to love themselves, let alone their immigrant neighbors! 😊

I don't know if I fully agree with Hochul's plan 🤔. On one hand, it's about time we take a stand against ICE and protect our local law enforcement from being used as federal enforcers 💪. But on the other hand, aren't they just trying to create more chaos by not having formal agreements in place? I mean, wouldn't that lead to more confusion and, like, actual problems for immigration officials who need help 🤷‍♀️?

And what about all those Republican county executives who are already part of the 287(g) program? Don't they have a point when they say this bill is too soft on crime 🚫? I mean, isn't it better to just let local cops do their thing without federal interference? But then again, wouldn't that be, like, super pro-immigrant and not pro-law-and-order at all 😒?

I'm just so... confused 🤯. Can we really have it both ways? 🤷‍♂️
