Hong Kong high-rise death toll rises to 94, with dozens still missing

At least 94 people have died in the devastating high-rise fire that ravaged a residential complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, with dozens still missing and presumed trapped inside.

The investigation into the disaster is ongoing, with officials scrutinizing whether safety standards were met on exterior walls. According to Security Secretary Chris Tang, two "unusual" circumstances warrant a criminal probe. Firstly, the protective materials used on external walls did not meet fire-retardant standards, allowing the blaze to spread at an alarming rate once ignited.

Glass windows were sealed with styrofoam boards, which are notorious for spreading fire when exposed to heat. The intense and rapid spread of the fire was a major factor in the high casualty count.

Among those who lost their lives was 37-year-old firefighter Ho Wai-ho, one of the first responders on the scene. He died at the hospital after collapsing from injuries sustained during the rescue efforts.

The victims, many of whom were foreign domestic helpers employed by Hong Kong residents, have left families and friends in shock around the world. Countries including the US and Indonesia offered condolences, with the U.S. consul general stating that his thoughts are with the "victims, their families, and all those affected" by the disaster.

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged authorities to take "all-out efforts" to minimize casualties and losses in Hong Kong, a densely populated city of 7.5 million people. The Pope also expressed condolences, saying he is sending "spiritual solidarity" to those suffering from the fire's effects.

πŸŒŸπŸ’” I'm still trying to process this devastating tragedy in Tai Po, Hong Kong... The fact that a fire broke out in a residential complex and spread so quickly is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. It's like, what went wrong? Were those safety standards really met on the exterior walls? I don't know if we can ever truly know until the investigation is done πŸ”.

And to make matters worse, an innocent firefighter lost his life trying to help others πŸ™. That's just not right. The victims... oh my god, many were foreign domestic helpers who left families and friends behind in shock around the world 😒. I'm so glad countries like the US and Indonesia offered condolences - it shows we care about our people, no matter where they're from ❀️.

I think it's really important for us to focus on finding out what went wrong here and making sure that something like this never happens again πŸ”„. We need to make sure all these safety measures are in place so that everyone can feel safe in their homes πŸ‘.

can we really blame anyone for this? its just bad luck & poor building design πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, have you seen the footage of the styrofoam boards on the windows? that was always gonna be a fire hazard... and dont even get me started on how many buildings in hk are older than 20 yrs with outdated safety features. so lets not jump to conclusions & start a witch hunt πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

😩πŸ”₯ just saw this news about that fire in Hong Kong and it's absolutely devastating... like 94 people dead and dozens more missing πŸ€•. Can't believe they were using styrofoam boards on the windows, that's insane πŸ˜‚. And a firefighter died trying to save others? That's heartbreaking ❀️. The lack of safety standards is just mind-blowing... how did this happen? πŸ’”

🀯 this fire is literally insane! like how did it spread so fast? and what's with these styrofoam boards they're literally spreading the fire 🚨πŸ’₯ i feel bad for all the victims, especially that firefighter Ho Wai-ho he was trying to save ppl and ended up losing his life πŸ˜”. the fact that many of them were foreign domestic helpers just makes it even more heartbreaking πŸ’”. hope the authorities can figure out what went wrong and make sure something like this never happens again 🀞

😒 Disgusting situation - how do you get a fire that bad on a building? 🀯 Should've seen signs earlier... not just external walls, what about regular maintenance & inspections? πŸ’”

Ugh I'm still trying to process this heartbreaking tragedy πŸ€•... it's just so senseless that a high-rise fire in Hong Kong resulted in so many lives lost and dozens more trapped. The fact that the protective materials used on external walls didn't meet fire-retardant standards is just infuriating - who gets away with such blatant negligence?

The use of styrofoam boards, which are notorious for spreading fire when exposed to heat, must have been a major contributing factor to the blaze's rapid spread πŸš’. And the fact that two "unusual" circumstances warrant a criminal probe... well, that's just a huge red flag πŸ”΄.

I'm also deeply saddened by the loss of firefighter Ho Wai-ho - his bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten πŸ’”. The victims, many of whom were foreign domestic helpers, have left families and friends around the world in shock... it's heartbreaking to think about all those loved ones who are now grieving 🌎.

I'm worried about the long-term impact this disaster will have on Hong Kong's residents, who are already living under immense pressure due to rising housing costs and economic uncertainty πŸ’Έ. The city needs a lot of support right now - from authorities, from international aid organizations, and most importantly from our collective compassion ❀️.

man this is so sad πŸ€• the thought of all those ppl trapped in that building is like something outta a nightmare i was just thinkin bout how different it was when our high school caught on fire like 15 yrs ago and it was only like 2 people injured... but back then we had those fancy sprinkler systems installed, cant believe they didnt have proper safety measures in place for this Hong Kong complex πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ the styrofoam boards being a major contributor to the spread of the fire is just mind-blowing what kinda precautions were taken before allowing something like that to happen? anyway my heart goes out to those families and friends, cant imagine how hard it must be for them πŸ’”

πŸ€• Oh my god, this is just heartbreaking. I mean, 94 people lost their lives in that fire and dozens more are still trapped... it's just horrific. And the fact that some of these victims were foreign domestic helpers who have families and friends around the world... it's just so sad. πŸ’”

I'm also really concerned about the safety standards in place at this residential complex. I mean, you would think that with all the advancements in fire safety technology, something like this wouldn't happen. And the fact that the protective materials didn't meet fire-retardant standards is just crazy. 🀯

It's also really sad to hear about firefighter Ho Wai-ho... he was one of the first responders and he gave his life trying to save others. That's just tragic. πŸ˜”

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ can't believe the materials they used on that building... like, who thinks sealing glass windows with styrofoam boards is a good idea?! πŸ˜‚ it was just waiting for someone to set off a fire, and then what happens? A whole residential complex goes up in flames. πŸ’₯ 94 people dead, dozens more missing... this could've been prevented if those standards were actually met πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. RIP firefighter Ho Wai-ho, you're a hero for going back into the burning building to try and rescue others πŸ™. I hope Hong Kong gets the support it needs from all over the world, but come on guys... safety standards shouldn't be that hard to enforce πŸ’―.

can't believe this happened πŸ€• I mean, I've seen some horror movies in my time but this one takes the cake... a firefighter dies trying to rescue others? so sad πŸ’” what's going on with these buildings and their safety standards? it's just not right. got to hope they catch whoever is responsible for this disaster and bring them to justice 🚫

πŸ˜” This is just heartbreaking... 94 lives lost already? It's like, what even happened here? I mean, safety standards failed, glass windows were sealed with styrofoam boards that spread fire like crazy... it's just so preventable πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And the fact that a firefighter died trying to rescue others is just devastating πŸ’”. These poor people who lost their lives were mostly foreign domestic helpers... can you even imagine how tough this must be for their families back home? 🌎 It's not like we're going to make this up, but I hope authorities are taking full responsibility and getting to the bottom of this tragedy πŸ’―.

Ugh, this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... like what was going through their minds when they built that complex? Using styrofoam boards as fireproofing material? That's just reckless 😑... and the fact that two people lost their lives trying to save others is just devastating πŸ’”. And it's not even like they were even properly maintained, I mean, how hard is it to check fire safety standards on a building project? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's just so frustrating when something like this happens and you can't help but wonder if there are more systemic issues at play... like, was this an isolated incident or was it a warning sign of deeper problems? πŸ€”

🀯 this is just devastating, i mean can u even imagine being trapped in that building and not knowing if u r gonna make it out alive? πŸ™ its like a worst-case scenario come true. and that firefighter, ho wai-ho, died trying to save others... thats just heartbreaking πŸ€•. chinese president xi jingping is right tho, authorities need to do everything they can to minimize casualties and losses in hong kong. but also, what about the safety standards? how did this happen in the first place? πŸ€”

This is just devastating πŸ€•... can't even imagine how traumatic it must be for these families who lost loved ones in such a horrific way 😒. I mean, 94 people is already a staggering number and now we find out that the exterior walls weren't even up to fire standards? It's like they were playing with fire and expecting nothing to happen πŸ’₯. And to think about Ho Wai-ho, a firefighter who was on the scene trying to help others... RIP πŸ™. The fact that many of those victims were foreign domestic helpers just makes it all the more heartbreaking ❀️. I hope the authorities do take all-out efforts to get to the bottom of this and make sure something like this never happens again 🀞.

I'm still tryna process this... so many lives lost πŸ€•. It's crazy that they used styrofoam boards on glass windows - who thought that was a good idea? πŸ™„ I mean, I've seen some dodgy construction jobs in my day, but this is just insane. And to think it spread so fast, it's like it had a mind of its own... Anyway, condolences to the families and friends back home. It's heartbreaking to see people from all over the world rallying around those affected 🌎. I'm gonna keep an eye on this investigation - hope they get to the bottom of what went wrong πŸ’‘.
