How Lord Dannatt used his peerage to open doors for business interests

Lord Richard Dannatt, the former head of the British army, has been found to have broken rules four times since 2022 after using his peerage to open doors for business interests.

Dannatt was awarded a peerage by David Cameron in 2011 and received the Queen's House at the Tower of London as part of his role as constable of the Tower of London. He has used these roles to introduce companies, including one from Sierra Leone that was seeking permission for a Β£500m hydroelectric dam project, to ministers and officials.

However, Dannatt has also been accused of using his position to facilitate conversations between companies and government officials in exchange for payments.

In 2012, two undercover journalists from the Sunday Times secretly filmed Dannatt as he suggested joining their advisory board to promote a new defence product in exchange for Β£100,000 per year.

The House of Lords committee has ruled that Dannatt's actions were breaches of the rules and have imposed a four-month suspension on him. The decision was made after an investigation found that Dannatt had broken the code of conduct by offering his services as a paid member of a fake company's advisory board and by attempting to influence a criminal investigation into a group that attacked a factory owned by a US defence contractor.

Dannatt has accepted the sanction and expressed regret for his actions, stating that he hopes people will place them in the context of his 56 years' public service.

I gotta say, this is quite a mess 🀯. I mean, we're talking about Lord Dannatt here, a former head of the British army, and it seems like he's been using his title and connections to grease palms for his own business interests. It's just not right, you know? He's supposed to be a symbol of integrity and public service, but instead, he's been playing both sides and trying to make a profit from it. And to think that he's been doing this since 2022, it's like he thought he was above the law 🚫. I'm not surprised that the House of Lords committee found him out, though. Transparency and accountability are essential in any position of power. We need people like Dannatt held to a higher standard πŸ€”.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if one of my friends was caught doing something like this... πŸ€” They've been using their position to help out business interests and get paid for it, which seems kinda unfair. I mean, isn't that just what they're there for in the first place? It's like they're taking advantage of the trust people have placed in them. But at the same time, 56 years of public service is no joke, so you can understand why he might feel like he's being penalized too harshly. A four-month suspension seems a bit lenient to me... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm not surprised to see someone with Dannatt's background get caught up in this πŸ€”. It's just sad that he couldn't keep it clean despite having so much experience and influence. I mean, Β£100k per year for joining an advisory board sounds like a pretty big payday πŸ˜’. The thing is, if you're gonna use your power to help businesses, you gotta be transparent about it - no secret deals or backroom shakedowns πŸ’Έ.

It's also worth noting that these rules are in place to prevent just this kind of thing from happening, so I'm not sure why Dannatt thought he was above the law πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Four months is a decent punishment, though - maybe it'll make him think twice before acting like this again πŸ’.

πŸ€” this whole thing just feels like a mess. i mean, lord Dannatt's got a good point about putting things into perspective, but four breaches? it sounds like he thought the rules didn't apply to him πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. and what's with using his peerage to open doors for business interests? it's like he's more interested in lining his own pockets than doing actual good work for the country πŸ’Έ. and let's not forget about those Β£100k payments – that's some serious conflict of interest stuff πŸ€‘. anyway, i guess you've got to respect the fact that he owned up to his mistakes and apologized... but still, a four-month suspension feels kinda light considering the severity of the breaches 😐.

πŸ€” So I'm reading about Lord Dannatt getting suspended from the House of Lords because he broke rules... like four times since 2022! πŸ™ˆ It's crazy to think he used his peerage to help out businesses and get paid for it. The part that really got me is when he tried to influence a criminal investigation by being on an advisory board for a fake company πŸ€πŸ’Έ I don't know about you guys, but I feel like this kind of behavior should be taken more seriously. It's not just about the money, it's about using your position for personal gain and potentially influencing policy decisions... πŸ€• Does anyone think he should've gotten a longer suspension or do you think he got off easy? 😐

this is really concerning... Dannatt's actions seem like a clear abuse of power and trust πŸ€”. Using his peerage to facilitate conversations between companies and government officials just to get paid seems like a huge conflict of interest. I mean, if he was in a normal business setting, this would be seen as dodgy at best πŸ˜’. The fact that he tried to influence an investigation into a group that attacked a factory owned by a US defence contractor raises serious questions about his judgement and integrity. 4 months suspension might seem like a pretty lenient punishment to me...

can u believe it? Lord Dannatt thinkin he's above the law just 'cause he's got a fancy title 🀣 guess all those years of servin the army didnt teach him how to play by the rules... or maybe he thought he could just use his power for personal gain πŸ’Έ meanwhile, it's like, we gotta hold people in positions of trust accountable 4 their actions 🚨

πŸ˜• I'm not surprised by this news. As someone who's passionate about mindfulness and personal growth, it just goes to show how easily power and privilege can cloud our judgment. Rich folks like Dannatt think they're above the rules? πŸ™„ It's a reminder that we all need to stay humble and grounded, no matter what our titles or positions are.

I also wonder if people in similar positions have been tempted by these kinds of offers too... πŸ€” Are there checks in place to prevent this kind of behavior? We definitely need more transparency and accountability in our institutions. πŸ’―

It's pretty cringeworthy when you see someone with as much experience as Lord Dannatt getting caught out like this πŸ™ˆ. Four times breaking rules is still four too many! He used his position to help out mates and companies for personal gain, which is just not right. The fact that he was doing it in secret and thought he could get away with it shows a lack of accountability... or maybe just a bad decision πŸ˜•. I'm glad he's taking responsibility and accepting the sanction, but you'd think someone in his position would know better by now πŸ’‘.

idk how u expect someone who's been in the army for 56 yrs to just change overnight πŸ€”? Dannatt's got a reputation to uphold, and I guess he didn't exactly think through his moves. using peerage for personal gain is pretty shady, even if it's not meant to be overtly corrupt. 4 months suspension is still a bit harsh tho... wonder what the committee was thinking when they decided on that πŸ‘€

I mean, come on... Lord Dannatt using his peerage to open doors for business interests? That's just basic protocol, dude! πŸ™„ I'm surprised he didn't get caught sooner. Four times breaking rules is still breaking rules, you know? And Β£100,000 a year for joining an advisory board? That's like, totally not allowed. πŸ˜‚ The House of Lords committee should've been more strict, imo.

I think it's great that Dannatt accepted the sanction and expressed regret, but we need to hold people in power accountable, especially when they abuse their positions. Like, he's got 56 years of public service under his belt, so what's the excuse? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Anyway, I'm glad this scandal is out in the open now. It's all about transparency and accountability, you feel me? πŸ’‘

πŸ˜’ Lord Dannatt is just another example of how those with power can't be trusted to act right. I mean, who needs rules when you're used to getting what you want? He thinks he's above the law just because he's got a title and some influence. Newsflash, mate: it doesn't work that way. πŸ’”

And what really gets my goat is that people are actually surprised by this stuff. Didn't they know the guy was dodgy from the start? I mean, I've seen him on TV talking about defence and all this, but who knew he was just out for himself? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ It's like he thought he could just use his position to line his own pockets.

Anyway, four months off sounds like a decent punishment to me. At least someone's finally held him accountable. Now let's see if he can keep it up and not mess things up further. Fingers crossed for the public! πŸ‘

😐 Lord Dannatt's actions are super weird... I mean, who gets suspended from the House of Lords for opening doors for their mates? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's like, yeah sure he messed up but four months is a pretty harsh punishment considering it was all about facilitating business deals. Shouldn't we be worried more about him helping legit projects through? πŸ’Έ And what's with the undercover journalists - did they just have to go full James Bond to catch Dannatt in the act? πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ I'm not sure if I should feel disappointed or amused by the whole thing... maybe both? πŸ˜…

omg what's going on with this lord Dannatt dude?! 🀯 like how can someone get away with breaking rules four times since 2022 and still get a slap on the wrist? πŸ™„ especially when they're using their position to line their own pockets or benefit their business friends. i mean, Β£100k per year for just joining an advisory board? that's wild! πŸ€‘ and what's up with this shady stuff going down in Sierra Leone too? all these connections and deals being made behind closed doors... it's like they're playing some sneaky game. 😏 anyway, gotta respect the House of Lords for finally taking action, even if it's just a four-month suspension. still, can't help but feel like justice wasn't fully served πŸ€”

You can't separate the person from their actions πŸ€”. The fact that Lord Dannatt had a long career serving the country doesn't excuse his missteps. He's shown that power and privilege can corrupt even someone who has dedicated themselves to serving others. After all, "absolute power corrupts absolutely" - Winston Churchill πŸ˜’

I dont think its fair to be so harsh on Lord Dannat πŸ€”. Four times breaking rules aint that many, and hes had a 56 year career in the army and public service! πŸ™ He's clearly done alot for the country, and I think people should give him some leeway 😊. Its not like he was trying to enrich himself or hurt anyone - just doing what comes naturally to someone with his experience and connections πŸ’Ό. And let's be real, who doesn't love a bit of networking over a cuppa 🍡? I mean, even us! πŸ˜‰

πŸ€” I'm not surprised to hear about Lord Dannatt's antics. I mean, who wouldn't try to make some extra cash on the side, right? 😊 But seriously, it's still a bit dodgy that he was able to use his peerage to get all cozy with companies and government officials like that. It's like he thought he was above the rules or something.

I'm glad the House of Lords committee looked into this stuff and imposed some sanctions on him though. I mean, someone's gotta keep an eye on these types of people, right? πŸ‘€ And it's good to see Dannatt is taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing. 56 years of public service should've been enough to teach him better! πŸ™„

But what really gets me is how this kind of thing can happen in the first place. I mean, who grants a peerage without doing a proper background check on the person? It's just not right. We need more transparency and accountability in our system of government, you know? πŸ’‘

πŸ€” just heard about Lord Dannat getting suspended from the House of Lords for using his peerage to help out some business buddies πŸ€‘ it's a bit sus, but I guess you've got to hand it to him for being super prolific - four breaches in three years is impressive, right? πŸ˜‚ anyway, I think this whole thing highlights how important it is to have clear rules and regulations in place, especially when it comes to conflicts of interest. It's like, if you're a public figure with access to sensitive info, you've got a responsibility to do the right thing πŸ™ maybe we can all learn from Lord Dannat's mistake and be more mindful of our own actions πŸ€“

I'm so done with these rich folks thinking they can just waltz into politics and break all the rules πŸ™„. I mean, come on, a Β£100k per year advisory board gig? That's like asking for a slap on the wrist! The fact that Lord Dannatt thought he could just use his peerage to grease palms and get paid is just laughable πŸ˜‚.

And don't even get me started on the whole Sierra Leone thing... like, what's next? Selling access to our government officials for a quick buck? No thanks! As someone who's always been fiercely loyal to this platform πŸ“šπŸ’», it's sickening to see people abuse their power and trust. The sanctions might seem like a slap in the face, but I guess you've got to let the man learn his lesson the hard way... now if only our lawmakers would do the same πŸ˜’.
