Hytale will only cost $20 because it isn't good yet, its developer says

Hytale Relaunch Sparks Controversy with Aggressive Pricing Strategy

Hypixel Studios has announced that its upcoming game, Hytale, will be released in early access for a mere $20. The decision comes after the developer successfully reacquired the rights to the game from Riot Games, which had previously cancelled it due to "a major reboot of the game engine."

According to Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel Studios, the low price point is a reflection of the game's unfinished state. "I'm pricing Hytale as aggressively low as possible," he said in a statement on Twitter. "The game is unfinished and runs on a build from over four years ago. Charging more didn't feel right. I don't think the game is good yet."

Collins-Laflamme also shared that he's taking on significant personal risk by reviving the project, with a growing team of 50 talented individuals working on it. The "Standard" edition will be available for $20, while additional editions priced at $35 and $70 will offer in-game cosmetics.

The move has sparked debate among gamers, with some questioning Hypixel's decision to release the game at such an early stage. However, others have praised the studio's willingness to take risks and put the quality of the game above profit margins.

Hytale was originally cancelled by Riot Games in June 2025 after five years of development. The game has undergone significant changes since then, but its current state still raises questions about whether it's ready for release.

I gotta say, I'm both impressed and kinda worried about Hypixel's decision to launch Hytale at $20 πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ. On one hand, it shows they're willing to take risks and prioritize quality over profit - that takes guts πŸ’ͺ. And let's be real, the game is still a work in progress, so charging more would've felt like gerrymandering πŸ˜’.

But on the other hand, I'm curious about how this is gonna play out for the devs. They're basically putting their necks on the line here πŸ€•. The 50-person team is no joke, but are they really ready for the scrutiny that comes with a price point like that? And what about those who spend $70+ for in-game goodies - will it feel like they got ripped off πŸ’Έ?

For me, it's all about trust. If I believe in Hypixel and their vision, then maybe the low price point is a good thing 🀞. But if I'm someone on the fence, I gotta wonder: are they really prepared for the potential backlash? πŸ€”

This is gonna be a wild ride... $20 for a game that's still on beta? That's like buying a used car from a shady seller . Can't wait to see if the developers are just trying to make a quick buck or actually care about making a good game . I mean, 50 talented individuals working on it? Sounds like they're gonna need some coffee and a serious time management plan πŸ˜‚. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out... and by that, I mean if anyone can afford the extra editions πŸ€‘

I dont think its cool that Hypixel is releasing the game at 20 bucks... thats like buying a burger and fries at 5 bucks lol πŸ˜‚. I mean i know they said its unfinished but come on thats not an excuse to price it low like that. I bet they're just trying to get people to buy it so they can sell them more cosmetics later πŸ€‘. I think its kinda shady how Riot cancelled the game in the first place and now Hypixel is taking all the risk... πŸ€”

πŸ˜… I just saw this thread and gotta say, I'm both impressed and concerned about Hytale's price point... like $20 for early access? That's crazy! I get that the game is unfinished, but at the same time, it feels like Hypixel is trying to set themselves up for success (or failure?) by getting a ton of players in the door. 50 devs working on this thing is no joke, so kudos to them for taking on the risk. Still, I'd love to see some more dev diaries or updates before I drop that $20... πŸ€”

I'm not buying it πŸ€‘ $20 is crazy low, especially considering how unfinished the game is. I mean, if they're saying it's not good yet, why are they rushing to get it out there? Is this a ploy to get more players in and then...? I need some actual gameplay footage or developer diaries before I even consider shelling out that kinda cash πŸ’Έ

Ugh, just heard that Hytale is out and it's a total mess πŸ€• the devs are basically giving away the game for $20 and I'm like "why bother?" it's still got all these bugs and unfinished features that'll probably drive players insane in no time 😑 and don't even get me started on the "Standard" edition being only $20... I mean, what's next? Free games with every purchase at GameStop? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh dont get me wrong i love a good deal but $20 feels super cheap even if hytale is still unfinished im not sure if the lack of polish is worth paying 10 bucks less than the standard edition lol what im saying is hype up ur dev team and make it shine instead of just throwing a cheap launch price πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ

πŸ€” This whole thing is like, can we trust devs to put quality over cash? I mean, Hypixel's going all in on Hytale with a super low price point, and some gamers are hella salty about it πŸ˜’. But, you know, I get it. Collins-Laflamme is taking a huge risk by reviving the project, and he's basically saying, "Hey, we're not done yet, but let's release this anyway." It's like the gaming industry version of a progressive budget – gotta test the waters before you know what you've got 🌊.

Now, I'm not saying it's a bad move. If anything, it shows that devs are willing to take risks and put their games out there for the community to feedback. That's kinda like what progressive politics is all about – putting people over profits πŸ’Έ. Of course, others might see this as a gamble gone wrong... but hey, at least Hypixel's got guts for trying πŸŽ‰.

I'm so torn about this one πŸ€”. On one hand, I love that Hypixel is taking a risk and putting the quality of the game above profit margins πŸ’Έ. $20 for early access is crazy cheap, and if they're being upfront about the game's unfinished state, I appreciate their transparency πŸ“Š. However, at the same time, I'm worried that players are getting taken advantage of πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Five years of development is a long time to be working on something, and you'd think Riot Games would've caught up with them by now πŸ’».

I also wonder what's going to happen when the game's actually finished... will they raise prices or stick with the $20 model? πŸ€‘ Either way, I'm keeping an eye on this one πŸ‘€.
