ICE Arrested Father Who Cared for His Ill Son — Then Denied His Request to Attend Son’s Funeral

A devoted father was left to mourn his terminally ill son without being by his side, after being detained for three months in an immigration center. Maher Tarabishi had been holding it together for his son Wael during the boy's battle with Pompe disease, a rare condition that leaves patients unable to eat or drink on their own.

Tarabishi was arrested by ICE agents at his check-in appointment in October and was being held at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Texas. His family had been advocating for his release so he could continue caring for Wael, but ultimately Tarabishi's fate would be decided after Wael's death on January 23rd.

The day of Wael's passing, Maher received devastating news that his son was gone. Breaking down on the phone with his daughter-in-law Shahd Arnaout, he repeatedly expressed his shock and grief at losing Wael without being able to care for him himself.

With Wael's impending funeral now imminent, ICE officials initially seemed willing to accommodate Tarabishi's request for release, as they had done previously when allowing other detainees to attend their loved ones' funerals. However, in a last-minute decision made by ICE management, the detention center informed Tarabishi that he was not allowed to attend his own son's burial.

According to an automated transcript of a voicemail obtained by The Intercept, an ICE supervisor told Tarabishi's attorney Ali Elhorr that Maher would have to stay at the detention center for the funeral. The official claimed they had received no formal request from anyone to attend the service, and also disputed Tarabishi's claims of being Wael's primary caregiver.

The case highlights the complex and often contradictory policies of ICE, which sometimes appear to prioritize national security concerns over humanitarian ones. It has sparked an outpouring of support for Maher Tarabishi from family members, advocates, and journalists who are calling on ICE to revise its stance on this matter.

In a poignant message recorded just days before his death, Wael had expressed his desire not to die until he could see his father again. The heartbreaking story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can befall families torn apart by immigration policies, and has ignited a new wave of outrage against ICE's handling of Maher Tarabishi's case.

🤔 it's just so unfair maher tarabishi was already grieving over his son wael's passing and then finds out he can't even be there for the funeral? 🚫 what kind of system detains someone for three months only to deny them a chance to say goodbye to their own child? 😢 does ice really think they're doing more harm than good by keeping people like maher locked up? 🤷‍♂️ and meanwhile, wael's words still ring true "see my father again"... it's heartbreaking how his wishes were ignored 💔

Man this is so sad 🤕. Three months without seeing his son Maher was already a huge blow but then to find out he wasn't allowed to be there for the funeral is just heartbreaking 💔. I mean can you even imagine having your world turned upside down like that? The fact that ICE managed to make it seem like they were doing what's best (allowing him to care for his son) but then had a change of heart and denied him the right to attend the funeral just doesn't add up 🤯. It's clear that Maher was Wael's primary caregiver, I'm not buying the official story about them disputing it 🙅‍♂️. ICE needs to seriously rethink their policies on this one 👮‍♂️.

OMG 😱 this is so wrong 💔 Maher was literally holding it together for his son during his illness and now he gets detained 🚫 for 3 months just to be with Wael on his last day? 🤯 like what even is the point of that? 🙄 ICE should totally revise their policies on this one 👮‍♀️🔥

🤕 this is just crazy... I cant believe the dude was detained for 3 months and then they had the nerve to say he couldn't even attend his own son's funeral. that's just messed up. i mean, come on, ICE has no problem with people dying in detention centers but having a family member care for someone with a terminal illness is too much to ask? 🤯 the fact that they questioned whether tarabishi was wael's primary caregiver just shows how out of touch they are with reality. and what really gets me is that wael recorded a message just days before he died saying he didn't want to die until he could see his dad again... it's like, what even is the point of having a detention center if you can't care for your loved ones? 🤷‍♂️

Ugh, this is just awful... 🤕 3 months without seeing his son before Wael passed away and now he's being denied to attend the funeral? It's like they're saying his life isn't worth more than some arbitrary policy. I mean, who do they think they are?! Maher's been holding it together for Wael the whole time and this is what happens to him? 🤯 And to make matters worse, ICE is basically saying that if someone wants to care for their loved one while in detention, that's not a valid reason for release. It's just ridiculous. And now we're seeing an outpouring of support for Maher... about time people started speaking up about the atrocities that happen behind those detention center doors 😡

😞 u guys, this is just so heartbroken... Maher Tarabishi was literally dying to hold his son's hand at the funeral, but ICE had other plans 🤕. I mean, can't they see that he's not a flight risk? He's been detained for 3 months already! It's like they're more worried about paperwork than human lives 💔. The kid wanted to see his dad one last time before passing away... is that really too much to ask? 🤷‍♂️ I'm so angry and sad at the same time 😡👎. ICE needs to get their act together and start putting people over policies 🙏. This is just another example of how broken our immigration system is 🚧. We need to raise awareness and make some noise about this... no one deserves to go through what Maher Tarabishi and his family are going through 😩.

man... this is just so messed up 🤯 Maher Tarabishi was already struggling to hold it together for his son Wael while he was fighting for his life, and then you take him away from him in the middle of that journey? like, what's more important here - national security or a dad getting to say goodbye to his dying son? 😔 it's just heartbreaking to think about. and the fact that ICE is basically saying no to releasing Maher because they don't want to risk being seen as sympathetic, it's just ridiculous 🙄. this whole thing feels like a massive human rights fail...

this is just a total disaster 😱ICE needs to seriously reevaluate their policy on detainees attending funerals...i mean what kind of organization holds someone back from seeing their terminally ill son one last time? it's not like he was planning a party or something 🤣 maher tarabishi deserves so much better than this 🙏 and the fact that they disputed his claims of being wael's primary caregiver is just icing on the cake...ICE needs to take responsibility for their actions and treat detainees with some basic human dignity 👮‍♂️

🚨 This is just heartbreaking 😩. I mean, who gets detained for 3 months and then told they're not allowed to say goodbye to their terminally ill son?! 🤯 Maher should be released ASAP so he can at least attend his son's funeral in dignity 💔. It's all about priorities - national security or human lives? 🙄 ICE needs a serious overhaul, this is just another example of how broken our immigration system is 🚫💔.

OMG 🤯 this is literally heartbreakin' 🙈 can u even imagine bein in maher's shoes?? 😩 his son wael was goin through so much & he had to be stuck in that detention center 🚫 while maher is tryna hold it together 4 him, but they dont let him see his own son during the funeral?! 🤕 what kind of policies r those at ice?! 💔 this whole thing is just so unfair 🙄 and the fact that wael recorded a message sayin he didnt wanna die till he saw maher again...😭 it's like,ICE needs 2 take responsibility 4 their mistakes & let maher come home 2 be w/ his family during this hard time 💕

OMG 😱 this is just so sad 🤕 i cant even imagine being in maher tarabisis shoes right now 🙏 he was trying to take care of his son wael for months and then gets detained for 3 months without any support or release 😭 it's like they're more concerned with national security than human life 🚫ICE needs to re-think their policies ASAP 👎 and also maher tarabishi should be there for waeals funeral as his primary caregiver 💔 he shouldn't have to choose between being with his son or fighting for his own freedom 🤝

I mean come on, ICE is literally doing everything wrong here. A guy's terminally ill son is dying, his wife is in distress, and they're still holding him captive in some detention center? What's the point of even having a human rights policy if you're not gonna follow it? And now they're telling Maher Tarabishi he can't attend his own son's funeral because of some petty rule about formal requests? Are you kidding me? This is like something out of a bad movie. ICE needs to get its act together and start putting people over politics for once 😡

ICE needs 2 rethink this 🤕... Maher was literally with his son every step of the way & even got to hear Wael say he didn't want 2 die till he saw him again! What more proof do they need?! 😭 It's not like he's just gonna suddenly start loving America if he gets 2 see his son get buried. This is just so heartbreaking & unfair... Maher deserves 2 be with his son in this darkest of times 💔

I just watched this crazy video on my phone of a cat trying to "help" its owner with cooking and it's literally hilarious 🤣. The way the cat keeps knocking over utensils and then looks like it's trying to solve a puzzle... anyway, I digress from this super sad story about Maher Tarabishi. ICE's policies are super messed up, no doubt about that 😔. But have you guys ever noticed how some of these immigration centers look like they're straight out of a bad sci-fi movie? The conditions in those places must be horrific for people stuck there... anyway, I'm gonna go watch more cat vids now 🐈😹

🤯 Can you believe this is how our system is treating ppl? 🙅‍♂️ Maher was literally holding it together for his dying son & now he gets detained from attending the funeral? 💔 It's not just about him, think of all the others who've been through similar struggles. ICE needs to re-think its priorities & consider the human cost of these policies. 🚫

man, this is so messed up 🤯... Maher Tarabishi gets detained for 3 months while his kid is dyin' alone and he can't even be with him in the end? it's like they're more worried about followin' rules than human lives...ICE should really rethink their policies on immigration - these people are just tryna take care of their families like any other parent would 🤝

I'm so sad for this guy, Maher... 🤕 His son Wael was like his everything, and to be held back from being with him in his last moments is just heartbreaking. I can imagine how hard it must've been for him to not see his son's funeral, considering how much he'd been taking care of him throughout the whole ordeal. ICE needs to get its priorities straight and start showing some humanity. This isn't about national security, it's about treating people with respect and dignity. Maher deserves better, and so does Wael... rest in peace, buddy 🌹

It's absolutely heart-wrenching to think about Maher Tarabishi being held in an immigration center while his terminally ill son Wael is fighting for his life 🤕. I mean, what's the point of even having a detention center if you're not going to allow a dad to be by his son's side when he needs him most? And now that Wael has passed away, ICE's decision to keep Maher detained for the funeral is just cruel and inhumane 😔.

I feel like our immigration policies are so messed up right now. It's like they're more concerned with national security than actually taking care of human beings. I mean, what's a little family time between a parent and child compared to some grand national agenda? 🤷‍♂️

It's not like Maher was asking for special treatment or anything - he just wanted the chance to say goodbye to his son in person. Is that really too much to ask from an agency that claims to be responsible for keeping our country safe? I don't think so 🙄.

This whole thing is a big wake-up call for all of us to rethink our priorities when it comes to immigration and family policies. We need to start putting the people first, not just some abstract notion of national security. It's time for ICE to reevaluate their stance on this matter and do what's right - release Maher Tarabishi and let him pay his respects to his son in peace 🙏.

🤕
ice is like, super harsh right now 🚫
detaining dad while son is dyin' is so wrong 👎
wael wanted to see his dad 1 last time & maher wasnt allowed 🤕
why do they care more about paper work than human lives 📝
ICE needs to re-think their policies ASAP 💪
