Iran to boycott World Cup draw over lack of visa for federation president

Iran's Football Federation Pulls Out of World Cup Draw Over Visa Row

The Iranian football federation has announced that it will boycott the upcoming FIFA World Cup draw in Washington D.C. due to a visa dispute involving its president, Mehdi Taj. The decision comes after Taj and other members of the delegation were denied visas by the US state department.

According to reports, four officials from the FFIRI were granted visas to attend the tournament, but Taj was one of three individuals who had their applications rejected. This move has raised concerns that Iran may withdraw its team from the World Cup altogether.

The issue is particularly contentious given that the US government has a travel ban in place on citizens from several countries, including Iran. However, athletes and coaches are exempt from this ban, although it appears that Taj does not fall into either of these categories.

"We have informed FIFA that the decisions taken are unrelated to sport and that the members of the Iranian delegation will not participate in the World Cup draw," said a spokesperson for the FFIRI, Amir Mehdi Alavi. "This is a clear indication that we will not be participating in any capacity."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously pledged that all teams would be welcome at the World Cup, but his words may have fallen on deaf ears as Iran takes its stance.

The US Department of State has refused to comment on the matter, while FIFA has declined to provide further information. However, it's clear that this visa dispute is having a significant impact on the Iranian team's participation in the tournament.

awww man πŸ€• this is soooo unfair! i feel bad for iran and their football team πŸ˜” like they got visas for some but not mehdi taj πŸ˜” it just doesn't make sense πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i hope they can figure out what's going on and get everything sorted out soon πŸ’ͺ maybe the us government should look into making a special exception just for athletes? πŸ™ that would be amazing πŸ‘

omg can u believe this? 🀯 Iran's football federation is pulling out of the World Cup draw over some Visa drama πŸš«πŸ’Έ like what even is the point of a football tournament if u cant attend? πŸ˜‚ and its not just the football, think about all the other athletes who arent allowed to compete in the US due to that travel ban πŸ˜”...anyway, i feel for Iran, hope they can sort it out ASAP so they can show us what they got on the pitch πŸ’ͺ

😬 This whole thing is just a headache for everyone involved. I mean, can't you just sort out visas for one person? It's not like Mehdi Taj's presence at the draw is going to bring some kind of global security risk. And now Iran's team might miss out on the World Cup entirely - that's a huge shame for football fans everywhere πŸ†. I guess this says something about the complexities of international relations and the US government's stance on travel bans, but can't we just focus on the beautiful game? 😊

πŸ€” The whole thing with Iran and the World Cup draw seems super weird. I mean, you'd think that the US gov't would be all about promoting sports and unity, but visa issues seem to be taking priority? πŸ™„ It's not like this is a massive surprise considering the travel ban in place for Iranian citizens... or is it supposed to exempt athletes and coaches from that too? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Anyway, I'm sure the Iranian team will figure out what to do next. Maybe they'll just boycott the whole thing or something. It's not like the World Cup can't go on without 'em... 😐

ugh no way is iran gonna be at the world cup lol πŸ˜‚ they cant even get visas πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ its not like the us govnt doesnt have better things 2 do than deal w/ this drama... like FIFA needs 2 step in & be all "oh ok, we dont care bout ur visa problems" πŸ™„ i guess thats what happens wen u try 2 play hardball w/ the states πŸ˜’

Ugh, what a mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! I mean, come on, who needs visas for football? It's just a tournament, right? Anyway, I think FIFA should really look into this and make some rules about visa requirements for officials. This is all just causing drama and tension between countries... can't we just focus on the beautiful game? πŸ†πŸ’ͺ

This is quite a mess πŸ€”. I mean, you'd think that FIFA and the US government would have ironed out these kinds of issues before the World Cup draw, especially with athletes like Taj involved. It's not just about visas for him, it's about his entire team and the country they represent.

I don't blame Iran for taking a stand, but at the same time, I feel bad for the fans who were looking forward to seeing their team participate in the World Cup. The US travel ban does seem like a double standard, though - if athletes are exempt, why not Taj? It's all a bit confusing πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

Ultimately, this whole thing just highlights how complex international relations can be, especially when sports and politics get mixed up. I just hope Iran finds a way to participate in the World Cup without too much drama 😬.

omg what a drama 🀯 i dont blame them tho, us visas are super strict and it sounds like they were already having issues getting taj's family members into the country too 😩 but come on, world cup is all about football 🏟️ not politics... or is it? πŸ˜‚ fyi, this is like that scene from mr. robot where the team is all "we can't participate in the game" and then they just withdraw 🚫 i guess we'll have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out πŸ‘€

ugh dont believe the hype americans think they can just dictate how others play by their rules?? 😑 like wat about all those iranian players who wanna compete in the world cup?!?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and now they're gonna boycott the draw cuz of a stupid visa issue??? its soooo unfair!!! 4 out of 5 iranian officials get visas but taj gets denied?? what does that even say about america's values or whatever? πŸ™„

this whole thing got me thinking about how visa politics can be such a heavy burden for athletes and officials... like, they just wanna play or attend the draw, but noooo, there's all these red tape and bureaucratic nonsense getting in the way πŸ€”. it's not just iran, either - i've seen similar situations happen with other countries where visas are being denied left and right... what does this say about our global relationships, you know? how can we expect people to come together and compete when there's all this mistrust and suspicion? πŸŒŽπŸ’”

omg, can u believe dis?? 🀯 so iran's football federation is boycotting the world cup draw cuz their president got denied a visa by the us state department? its like, i get it, visas can be tricky, but to boycott the whole thing? that's sus... especially with all the hype around the tournament. and now everyone's wondering if iran will even show up to the world cup πŸ€”. it's just so frustrating when politics gets in the way of sports, u feel? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

this is so weird πŸ€”, i mean i get why they wouldn't want to deal with the drama but i'm really hoping iran still shows up for the world cup... like what if they just get special visas or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it's all so confusing... and can you imagine if other countries are already stressed about their teams' participation? 🌎πŸ’₯

This whole thing is pretty ridiculous πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, I mean, come on, four officials get visas, but the president doesn't? What's up with that? It's like they're trying to make an example out of him or something πŸ˜’. And now Iran's gonna boycott the draw, which just means they'll probably be all mopey and stuff at the World Cup πŸŽ‰... just kidding, I'm sure they'll still manage to win some matches πŸ’ͺ (just kidding about that last part too, let's be real, Iran won't come close). Seriously though, can't we just have a tournament where everyone gets along and has fun? No drama, no visas, no politics 🀝... it's always more fun when sports are about the love of the game, not bureaucratic red tape πŸ’Έ.

yeah, i get it, usa's all about protecting its own interests πŸ™„. so now we're supposed to just roll over and let iran have its way? seems kinda unfair if they can't even get their president a visa πŸ€”. i mean, who needs the world cup when you've got politics getting in the way of good sportsmanship? πŸ†πŸ‘Ž
