Is this Labour party for rich investors or hard-working leaseholders? We must make that clear today | Angela Rayner

Labour's Commitment to Leaseholders: Can the Party Deliver on Its Promise?

The UK government has been criticized for its handling of leasehold reform, with many leaseholders struggling to afford high ground rents. The issue is complex, but one thing is clear: Labour has a commitment to address this problem.

A recent cabinet meeting saw Prime Minister Rishi Sunak make a powerful case for a government that serves the interests of those struggling to get by. This is exactly what's needed – a government that stands up to entrenched interests and fights for ordinary people.

The issue of ground rents dates back decades, with leaseholders being charged high amounts for the right to occupy their own homes. The problem has been exacerbated by the rise of unregulated ground rents, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet.

Labour's promise to tackle this injustice is clear: the party aims to end the scandal of unaffordable ground rents and ensure that leaseholders receive fair compensation. But the government seems reluctant to act, with ministers facing fierce lobbying from wealthy investors trying to water down Labour's manifesto commitment.

The argument that reforming ground rents could risk backlash from investors is misleading. The reality is that only a tiny fraction of UK pension fund assets are dependent on ground rents, and the impact would be minimal. Moreover, this unproductive investment does nothing for the economy.

Labour has already taken steps to protect leaseholders, but more needs to be done. The draft leasehold and commonhold reform bill can move us towards a more equitable system, but meaningful action is needed to tackle ground rents – at the very least, an annual cash cap.

The fight over ground rents is not just about leaseholders; it's about whose side we're on and who we're in government to fight for. If Labour cannot deliver on its promise, it risks losing the trust of ordinary people.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: Labour must take a stand against entrenched interests and fight for those struggling to make ends meet. It's time to show that this party truly cares about the welfare of its constituents – particularly those who have been left to suffer under the weight of unaffordable ground rents.

By taking bold action, Labour can not only address this injustice but also send a clear message to the country: we're in government to fight for ordinary people, not just the wealthy and well-connected. It's time to put this principle into practice – and get the job done.

🤔 I mean, come on, it's about time someone took on those greedy landlords 🤑. The whole ground rent thing is a total scam, and it's only going to affect the most vulnerable people who can't even afford their own homes 🏠💸. Labour's commitment to tackling this issue is long overdue, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a massive fan of the party 💖.

The thing is, if they don't deliver on their promise, it'll be like, "What's the point, mate?" 🤷‍♂️ We've been waiting for so long for some real change, and it's hard to trust them when they're just saying one thing but doing another 😒. But at the same time, I do think that Labour has made a good start by introducing those measures to protect leaseholders 🙌.

The problem is, it's all about finding that balance between giving leaseholders fair compensation and not scaring off investors who are trying to make a living 💸💪. It's not rocket science, but it does require some serious backbone from the politicians 🤴. Fingers crossed they can get it right this time, though 😊.

🤔 The thing is, I'm all for Labour taking on the big players who are ripping off leaseholders. It's like they're being taken advantage of, you know? High ground rents that just keep going up and up... it's not fair. 💸 And yeah, the government's been pretty slow to act on this one. But if Labour really wants to make a difference, they need to be tough on these big investors. Like, really tough. It's not just about being nice or trying to balance competing interests – it's about standing up for what's right. 🚫 And honestly, if Labour can't do that, I'm not sure who can. 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm not sure if Labour is doing enough to tackle ground rents yet... they've already made some progress with leasehold reform, but it seems like they're still being held back by the government 🙄. I mean, what's the point of having a manifesto commitment if you can't deliver on it? 🤷‍♂️ The argument that reforming ground rents could risk backlash from investors is just not true, in my opinion 💸. Labour needs to be more proactive and take bold action against these entrenched interests 👊. And let's be real, the draft bill is a good start, but it's still not enough 📝. What do you guys think? Should Labour be doing more to address this issue?

🤔 i think labour is being too optimistic about tackling ground rents. it's gonna be a tough nut to crack, especially with all the lobbying from investors. they're not gonna give up their profits without a fight 💸. and let's be real, even if labour does manage to pass some reforms, it won't magically make all leaseholders rich overnight 🤑. it's gonna take time, effort, and more than just a draft bill to sort this mess out 📝. plus, what about the investors who are already making huge profits from these dodgy ground rents? they're not exactly going to be best buds with labour 🤝. gotta think critically about how this is all gonna play out 👀

omg i totally feel u on this 🤯 labour needs 2 step up their game on leasehold reform ASAP!!! 🚨 it's so unfair that ppl r being ripped off by these high ground rents 😡 and yeah i no they're tryin to protect investments but like who cares about the ppl gettin shafted 🤑 we need a govmt that puts ordinary peeps 1st, not just the wealthy & well-connected 💸 labour's gotta deliver on its promise or risk losin trust with regular people 👎

🙌 I'm totally on team Labour here 🤝. They need to take on those big investors who are making it hard for regular folks to afford their own homes 🏠💸. I mean, come on, if they can't even make a living wage, how are we supposed to? It's just not right 💔. And yeah, the argument that reforming ground rents will risk backlash from investors is a total cop-out 🙄. We need real change now, not some watered-down version of it 😒. I'm all for Labour taking bold action and putting the interests of leaseholders first 👊. Let's hope they can deliver on their promise and show us that they really care about our welfare 🤞🏼💕

im so over all these politicians talkin about change, but never deliverin' 🤦‍♂️. labour's promise to tackle ground rents sounds great on paper, but if they can't even get their own act together, how can we trust them to fight for the little guy? 🤔 it's like they're just tryin' to win votes without actually doin' anythin' meaningful. and don't even get me started on all these rich investors who are just waitin' for labour to 'water down' their manifesto commitment... like, hello, those people should be worried about losin' their wealth, not their influence 🤑. the real question is, what's labour's endgame here? are they just tryin' to appease the wealthy elite or actually fightin' for a fairer system? 🤷‍♂️

🤔 I'm so sick of hearing about high ground rents 😒, it's like these devs are just trying to take advantage of innocent people who already struggle to make ends meet 🤑. Labour needs to step up their game and make some real changes 💪. The fact that they've taken steps to protect leaseholders is a good start, but we need more 🔥. An annual cash cap on ground rents would be a great starting point 📈. It's not about the wealthy investors or pension fund assets, it's about people who are actually hurting and can't afford their own homes 🏠💕. Let's see some action from Labour! 🚀

I mean, it's about time someone took the government to task over leasehold reform 🙄. I've been saying it for years - the whole system is a rip-off. Labour's commitment to tackling ground rents is definitely a step in the right direction 💪. But let's be real, the government's reluctance to act says more about their priorities than anything else 😒. I'm not holding my breath until we see some real change, but at least it's nice to have someone speaking up for those who are struggling to afford their own homes 🏠.

🤔 I'm so over the endless excuses from politicians about how reforms will impact "entrenched interests" 🤑 Like, who do they really care about? The millions of leaseholders struggling to afford their own homes or the pension funds making bank off these dodgy investments 💸? Labour's promise to tackle ground rents is a good start, but what's with all the caveats and delay tactics? 🕰️ It feels like we're just hearing the same old nonsense about how reforms will be too complicated or risk backlash... can't they just deliver already?! 🤷‍♂️ The thing that really gets me is how often these politicians talk about "ordinary people" but never actually do anything to help them 🌎

I'm so with you on this ground rents thing 🤯! Labour needs to follow through on their promise and make some real changes. I mean, it's not like these leaseholders are asking for much – fair compensation for a roof over their heads? It's not too much to ask 🙄. And honestly, if Labour can't deliver on this one, it's gonna be hard to trust them with anything else.

omg I'm literally freaking out thinking about how unfair leasehold reform is 🤯 like who gets to decide what's fair when it comes to our own homes?!? Labour has to deliver on its promise, no excuses! 💪 The fact that the government is more concerned with rich investors than ordinary people is just disgusting 🙄 I mean come on, £100k a year for a tiny fraction of pension fund assets?!?! It's ridiculous! 🔥 And what about all the families struggling to make ends meet because of these unaffordable ground rents?!? It's like they're being punished for not having enough money 💸 The draft bill is a step in the right direction, but we need more concrete action - an annual cash cap would be a game-changer! 🚀 We can't let Labour down, we have to hold them accountable and make sure they actually follow through on their promises 💯

I'm literally stressing about my own leasehold situation rn 🤯 I mean, I've been paying those ridiculous ground rents for years and it's like I'm stuck in a never-ending cycle of debt 💸. Labour's promise to tackle this issue is exactly what I need – someone to fight on behalf of us leaseholders who are being taken advantage of 😩. The fact that the government isn't taking action just makes me more anxious 🤷‍♀️. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Labour delivers on its promise and we get some real change 🤞.

I'm thinking... 🤔

The thing is, Labour needs to follow through on its promises and really take action against these greedy landlords who are making life super hard for leaseholders. I mean, it's not just about them, it's about the fact that we're in government and we should be fighting for people like my neighbors who can't afford their own homes 🏠😩.

I think the idea of a cash cap on ground rents is a good one, but it needs to go further than that. We need real change here, not just token gestures. And let's be real, if we want to get anything done, we need to start by taking on these powerful lobby groups who are trying to water down Labour's manifesto commitment 💸😡.

It's time for Labour to show us what it really means to care about the people who vote for them. We deserve better than just empty promises and platitudes 🤷‍♂️💬.

I'm so down with labours stance on ground rents 🤝💪 they really gotta do more than just draft a bill its all about deliverin on promises & takin care of the common people not just those with deep pockets 💸🏠

omg have you seen rishi sunak's face when labour is pushing him on ground rents lol anyway seriously though i think labour has a good shot at delivering on their promise if they just stick to it no need to worry about investor backlash it's like that one scene from 13th woman where the lawyer says "you're not gonna get away with this" same thing here labour needs to stand firm and fight for leaseholders
