"It's wrong": Minnesota Republican ends bid for governor over ICE surge "disaster"

Minnesota Republican drops out of gubernatorial race, citing "unmitigated disaster" of ICE surge as reason for withdrawal.

In a surprise move on Monday, Minneapolis-based attorney Chris Madel announced his decision to end his bid for governor of Minnesota, stating that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the state had become an insurmountable obstacle for him. In a video message posted on X, Madel expressed his opposition to ICE's actions, which he described as "unmitigated disaster" and "stated retribution on the citizens of our state".

Madel's remarks came after it was revealed that his law firm had provided legal counsel to Jonathan Ross, the ICE officer who fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis on January 7. This incident sparked widespread protests in the city, highlighting the growing tensions between federal authorities and local residents.

While Madel has advocated for deporting undocumented immigrants involved in major crimes, he now believes that ICE's Operation Metro Surge, which was ordered by a Republican president, has expanded far beyond its original focus on public safety threats. According to Madel, this expansion has made winning a statewide election as a Republican "nearly impossible".

Madel stated that he could no longer support the party platform and the actions of his fellow Republicans. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to run but ultimately prioritized doing what he believed was right. In his words, "At the end of the day, I have to look my daughters in the eye and tell them: 'I believe I did what was right.'"

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party has called on other Republicans to stand up against President Trump's policies and support their fellow Minnesotans. The party chair, Richard Carlbom, stated that "Will other Republicans finally stand up to Trump and stand with their fellow Minnesotans? Or will they put their political careers first and foremost while their neighbors suffer?"

I'm not surprised to see another repugnant Republican drop out of the race ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, it's like they're trying to alienate voters or something. The whole thing with ICE just doesn't sit right with me... I get why Madel bailed ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's a pretty big deal when your own party's doing stuff that's hurting people in their own state ๐Ÿคฏ. And what's up with this Operation Metro Surge? Sounds like it's just an excuse to crack down on people who aren't even that bad... Anyway, can't say I'm shedding any tears for the GOP at this point ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Maybe Madel's decision will be a wake-up call for some of these folks ๐Ÿ‘€.

OMG yaaas Chris Madel just dropped out of the gubernatorial race in MN ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ฅ it's about time someone speaks out against those ICE ops ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ he's literally putting his daughters' eyes first ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ and that's EVERYTHING I'm low-key hyped for a more progressive MN ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’– now let's get real, if other Reps don't step up and challenge Trump's policies, they're just gonna be complicit in suffering with their fellow Minnesotans ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿค” I'm like totally surprised by this news... I mean, Chris Madel dropping out of the gubernatorial race over ICE operations in Minnesota... that's a pretty big deal ๐Ÿšจ. It seems like his law firm got involved with Jonathan Ross's case and now he can't go through with it? I feel bad for him, you know? His daughters must be super proud of him for doing what he thinks is right ๐Ÿ’•. But at the same time, this whole thing just highlights how polarized politics are in Minnesota... especially when it comes to immigration ๐ŸŒŽ.

OMG like i cant even imagine how hard it must be for a student to deal with the stress of studying amidst all this immigration drama in MN ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฉ i mean chris madel wasnt even a prof lol but he knew whats good for him and his family. its not easy seeing all this stuff happen to ppl u care about tho ๐Ÿ˜”

Umm yeah I was just thinking about how I need to organize my closet ๐Ÿ˜‚. I mean have you ever tried to find a good storage solution for your old clothes? It's like, so frustrating! Anyway, speaking of frustrating things... I saw this video of a cat trying to "help" its owner with their job and it was literally the cutest thing ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜น. But back to politics... what's up with these border control issues? My aunt is from Mexico and she always talks about how immigration laws are so complicated ๐Ÿ˜•.

thinks this is a big deal... i mean, who expected him to drop out over ICE ๐Ÿค” anyway, i guess it's good that he spoke up about it, but also kinda sad that it cost him the election ๐Ÿ™„ Madel's got some valid points about Operation Metro Surge expanding beyond its original purpose tho ๐Ÿ‘ not sure if this'll spark more Republicans to re-think their stance on immigration tho... maybe it'll just be a lost opportunity for a more progressive candidate ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿค” just dont get it why republicans cant just stick to issues like economy & healthcare lol like the ice stuff is so divisive its like theyre tryna make life harder for ppl who just wanna live in peace ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ‘ฅ and whats up with this operation metro surge thing it sounds like theyre just harassin people instead of helpin them

I feel bad for Chris Madel, he's just trying to do the right thing ๐Ÿค”. I get where he's coming from, ICE can be a real mess in some areas of the country. The whole situation with Jonathan Ross and Renee Good is super tragic and it's easy to see how that would make people angry.

I'm not saying Madel made the best decision for himself but at least he's being honest about why he's dropping out ๐Ÿ™. I don't think it's cool that his law firm got involved with ICE, though. Maybe he could've handled that situation better?

It's weird how some people will jump on the bandwagon when a candidate starts to say something unpopular ๐Ÿ˜•. If other Republicans are really going to stand up against Trump then they should do it without trying to score points off of Madel.

Wow ๐Ÿ’ฅ This is crazy! I mean, who would've thought a Republican would drop out of the gubernatorial race because of ICE operations in Minnesota? The way Madel talks about it being an "unmitigated disaster" makes sense, especially with his law firm getting involved with Jonathan Ross's case. The protests and growing tensions between local residents and federal authorities must be super intense right now ๐Ÿคฏ. I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but I wonder if this will actually make other Republicans reevaluate their stance on immigration policies...Interesting ๐Ÿ‘€

I gotta agree with this guy Chris Madel... I mean, who can blame him? ICE's been causing a lot of problems in Minnesota ๐Ÿค”. As much as I love a good debate, I think he made the right call ๐Ÿ’ฏ. Those protests were getting outta hand, and I don't think it's fair to have your law firm involved in something that's going to make people mad at you ๐Ÿ˜’. And let's be real, Operation Metro Surge is just causing more problems than it's solving ๐Ÿšซ. I'm all for public safety, but if the party platform is gonna be a mess like that, maybe it's best to just bail out now ๐Ÿ’ธ.

I'm thinking, you know? Like, Madel's out of the race, but it's not like he's the only one... I mean, this whole thing with ICE and Operation Metro Surge is getting pretty messy. ๐Ÿค” It's like, what even is the point of having a Republican party if they're just gonna follow Trump around like that? And now that Madel's out, who's gonna step up and say something about it? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I feel bad for his daughters, tho - can you imagine having to live with knowing you made the right decision? ๐Ÿ˜”

It's kinda sad when someone decides to step down from a run just 'cause it's too hard. I mean, we all wanna do what's right and help others, but sometimes the odds are just stacked against us ๐Ÿค”. Madel seems like he had his heart in the right place, wanting to protect people and keep them safe, but ICE's actions were really putting a target on his back. It's not about being afraid or giving up, it's about knowing when you can't make a difference anymore ๐Ÿ’ก. Maybe instead of stepping down, Madel could've found another way to make a change from the inside? But I guess sometimes you just gotta know when to fold 'em ๐Ÿ“š

ICE surge is a major problem in MN, gotta be addressed ๐Ÿค”. I think it's cool that Madel finally spoke out, people need to know what's really going on. He's not just saying it for the sake of running as a democrat, he genuinely believes it's unmitigated disaster ๐Ÿ’ฅ. Not sure if the Republican party can recover from this, seems like they're stuck in their ways ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Maybe some others will step up and take his place?
