Joe Root splutters but Ollie Pope prospers in England's Ashes warm-up

England's batting woes showed no signs of abating as their Ashes warm-up against England Lions descended into disarray. Joe Root, touted as a savior from Australia's failure to lift the urn on previous visits, struggled to make an impact, miscuing a pull off Matt Potts to midwicket for just one run in his 12-ball innings.

In stark contrast, Ollie Pope, often overlooked in the midst of the England batting hierarchy, seized the opportunity with both hands, scoring a century before edging into trouble against Shoaib Bashir's delivery. Pope's aggressive approach earned him the three-bird competition among England's top three batsmen – Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.

Crawley, however, struggled to make his mark, dismissed in the 80s, while Duckett was more of a one-trick pony, smacking boundaries with the edge of his bat. Stokes, who had starred with the ball on Thursday, made a valiant effort with the bat but top-edged a Will Jacks delivery, which arced neatly to Bashir.

Ben Duckett's boundaries were an outlier in the Lions' batting display, and even that was marred by a dropped catch from Ben McKinney in the slips. The England Lions bowlers had a field day, with four of them – Matt Potts, Nathan Gilchrist, Jacob Bethell, and Brydon Carse – claiming wickets.

Potts's nightmare stretch saw him concede 40 runs in five overs but eventually settled into a more measured pace, ending the day as the outstanding bowler despite his limited haul. The England Lions were left to ponder how they could capitalize on their opponents' struggles, with a substantial lead of 51 set before stumps.

England, meanwhile, will be under pressure to make better use of this opportunity as they head into the real Ashes contest next Friday. While Pope showed promising signs of his capabilities, Root's struggles may raise eyebrows back in England, casting doubt on whether he can inspire a successful Ashes campaign.

🤔 England's batting is like, super messy right now lol. Joe Root's form is really wobbly and it's making me question if he's the savior they thought he was 🙃. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope came out swinging and scored a century which is awesome! 💪 But the rest of the team? Not so much. Ben Duckett just smacks boundaries but can't do anything else and Zak Crawley struggled to even get off the ground 🌪️. Anyway, it's gonna be super interesting to see how they recover for the real Ashes next Friday 👀

I think its kinda cool that Ollie Pope stepped up to show everyone what he's made of 🤯. I mean, we've all been there where we feel like nobody sees our potential, but then we get a chance to prove ourselves and BAM! We can do some damage 🔥. The thing is though, sometimes even when we're doing well, we still gotta keep working at it 'cause complacency can creep in real quick ⏱️.

It's also interesting how some players are just having one good day while others are really struggling 🤕. Like Ben Duckett, he was on fire with the boundaries but couldn't quite sustain that level of performance 😐. That's a great reminder that even when we're feeling confident or on top of our game, it's still about how we respond to challenges and setbacks in the long run 💪.

And lastly, I love how Matt Potts was able to settle into a good rhythm after having a rough patch earlier 🌈. That shows us that everyone has their ups and downs, but if we can learn to adapt and stay focused, we can still achieve great things 👍.

OMG u guyz!! 🤯 england batting is SOOO not goin well lol... joe root is like the 1st choice but he just cant seem to get it rite 😔 and pope is just killin it!! i mean, who wudnt want a 100 in thashash warm up?? 🎉 but stokes, crawley & duckett r just not impressin me lol... they cud do better than dat 🤦‍♂️ & the england lions bowlers r like the real MVPs 🙌 potts is like teh man tho, hes tryna get it rite even wif his bad stretch 🤪

I don't know... 🤔 I mean, I think Ben Duckett's boundaries were actually kind of cool? 💥 But at the same time, it was so frustrating to watch him play, because he just seemed like he was trying too hard and not really being himself as a batter. And on the other hand, Ollie Pope's approach is kinda intimidating, you know? 🤯 I mean, I love that he's aggressive and stuff, but sometimes it feels like he's just going for the sake of going for it, instead of playing smart cricket. And what about Joe Root though... 😩 He's been one of England's best batters for years, but now he's struggling, so maybe it's time to give someone else a chance? 🤷‍♂️ I don't know... my mind is all over the place! 😂

I remember when I used to watch cricket and England would actually bat for hours without getting bowled out 😂. Now it seems like they're having a meltdown every time! Poor Joe Root, he's not doing so well this time around 🤕. But Ollie Pope is giving him some hope, his century was a nice change of pace from all the England batsmen struggling to make an impact 💪. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them in the real Ashes match, they'll need to step up their game if they wanna take down Australia 🇦🇺!

man I'm like totally stoked for Ollie Pope tho 🤩 he was on fire out there and showed everyone what he's got 😎 even though they're still struggling as a team overall i think it's great that Pope is giving them a reason to be hopeful about the Ashes 🌟 and at least some of their bowlers are doing alright too, Potts was pretty sharp despite his wobble 💪 fingers crossed they can turn it around next time out 👍

Ugh, come on guys, not another Ashes warm-up where England's batting is just a mess! 🤦‍♂️ Like, Joe Root can't even string together 12 balls without getting out and Ollie Pope is the only one showing some promise? 🤔 I mean, I know he was aggressive but at least he tried something different. And don't even get me started on Ben Duckett, smacking boundaries like it's his job (which, I guess, it kinda is) 🙄

The England Lions bowlers were all over them, btw. Like, Matt Potts had a total meltdown and then comes back strong? 🤓 What's going on with that guy? And the fact that they only scored 51 before stumps is just embarrassing. England needs to step up their game if they want to have any chance against Australia next Friday. ⏰

I feel bad I'm commenting so late 😅, but I've been out of touch for a bit! So, it looks like the Lions batting display was pretty underwhelming? I think Pope's century was a nice bright spot, and it'll be interesting to see how he carries that form into the Ashes. But yeah, Root's struggles are definitely a concern - does England have anyone who can fill in the gaps if he's not firing on all cylinders? And what's with Duckett's one-trick pony approach 🤔?

LOL just watched that England Lions batting display and I'm like "mate, what's going on?!" 😂 It's like they were trying to give the Aussies an easy win! 🤦‍♂️ Joe Root is having a laugh trying to make an impact but Ollie Pope is over here like the new savior of English cricket 🔥💪 and Ben Duckett just smacking boundaries for fun - what a one-trick pony, eh? 🎉 I'm not sure what's more entertaining, England's batting woes or Matt Potts's nightmare stretch 😂👀 Guess they'll be under pressure to make better use of this opportunity... time to step up their game or get left in the dust 🏃‍♂️💨

This batting lineup for England is just not working 🤦‍♂️. I mean, Ollie Pope is killing it but he needs guys like Joe Root to step up and deliver consistent performances. Instead, they're getting bowled out left and right by the opposition. It's like they're not even trying ⚡️. And Ben Duckett just smacks a few boundaries and that's it? Not impressed 🙅‍♂️. England needs to sort out their batting woes or else they'll be in trouble against Australia next Friday 🔥.

I'm really loving Ollie Pope's game right now 🤩! He's got that fire in him and I think it's so cool to see him shining on the big stage. Meanwhile, Joe Root is just not getting that consistent form we all know he can do 😐. It's gonna be interesting to see how England bounces back from this one, but Pope's showing some serious promise 💪.

I'm so stoked for Ollie Pope! 🤩 He really stepped up and showed what he's made of. I mean, 100 runs is no joke, especially in a warm-up match. And yeah, Joe Root is gonna need to shake off that rust soon or else it's gonna be tough for England to win the Ashes. Ben Duckett's one-trick pony vibes were pretty entertaining though 😂! Can't say I blame the Lions bowlers for capitalizing on England's struggles - they played some solid cricket. But, man, Stokes had a tough go of it with the bat 🤦‍♂️ still hoping he can bring his A-game to the real Ashes contest next week!

Ugh, I just love watching some old-school cricket matches and it's like, totally fascinating to see the players' styles 🤩. So, Pope is like this underrated hero who comes out of nowhere and smashes a century 🎯. But at the same time, I feel bad for Joe Root, he's always been touted as this big savior for England but he just can't seem to get it together 💔.

And what's with Ben Duckett? He's like one-trick pony, always hitting boundaries but then you don't see him do much else 🤷‍♂️. The England Lions bowlers were on point though, especially Potts - the guy was all over the place in his first few overs 😅.

It's interesting to think about how this warm-up match might affect the real Ashes contest next week 🤔. Do they really have a chance with Pope on their side? And what's going on with Root's form... 🤷‍♂️

England's batting woes are getting out of hand lol 😩 like what even is going on with Joe Root? 1 run off 12 balls and it's just not happening 🤦‍♂️ at least Ollie Pope stepped up his game, but that other guy Ben Duckett is a one-trick pony who thinks he can smite the ball every time out of nowhere 🙄 and what's with Stokes' top-edging skills? 😂 the England Lions bowlers were on point tho, those 4 guys went hard and it's like they knew Root was struggling before the game even started 🔍

🤔 gotta say, england's batting lineup is all over the place right now 🤦‍♂️. joe root's supposed savior complex isn't really showing up 🙅‍♂️, and it's like they're just phoning it in on the other side of the pitch 📞. popes a century tho, that's some nice work 😎 but what about stokes? he's always got the skills, so why not step up in the big one 🤔. england lions bowlers were all over them too 🙌. gotta wonder if they're gonna make some changes before the real ashes kick off next week ⏰.
