Letitia James visits Brooklyn soup kitchen as SNAP delays drag on

As the federal government shutdown dragged on, New York Attorney General Letitia James stepped up the pressure on Washington, visiting a Brooklyn soup kitchen to highlight the devastating impact of delayed SNAP benefits. The visit came just days after a federal judge ruled that the Trump administration must use emergency funds to keep the program running this month.

While the court order ensures some aid will resume, the Trump administration has announced it will only issue partial payments, leaving uncertainty over when and how much families will receive. The White House remained tight-lipped on the issue, refusing to comment.

James spoke with those waiting in line for donated meals at the Christian Fellowship Seventh-Day Adventist Church in East Flatbush, where she was met with dire warnings about the effects of the funding freeze. "We've seen lines of women, men and children standing in line for food," James said. "And unfortunately, the problem has only gotten worse."

For those like Ali McKinnon, who relies on food banks after struggling to qualify for SNAP due to living in a shelter, the situation is particularly dire. McKinnon warned that if people are left without access to basic necessities, chaos will ensue. "We don't need that right now," he said.

Raymond Cuevas, another soup kitchen patron who had been relying on SNAP benefits after taking time off work due to cancer treatment, expressed similar concerns about the impact on low-income families with children. "People are deciding between insurance for their car or food for their kids," he said. "God is watching."

The visit by James was joined by Congressmember Yvette Clarke and Assemblymember Monique Chandler-Waterman, who echoed her sentiments about the urgent need to resolve the funding impasse. The USDA remained silent on the issue.

The crisis highlights the human toll of Washington's inaction, with families forced to make impossible choices between basic necessities like food and healthcare. As the standoff continues, it remains to be seen when – or if – the White House will provide a solution to this critical problem.

I'm so worried about these people waiting in line for soup πŸ€•... I mean, SNAP benefits are meant to support low-income families, not leave them scrambling like that. The fact that partial payments are being issued is just a Band-Aid solution – it's still going to take a toll on people's lives. And what about those who can't afford insurance or food? We need more than just emergency funds to address this crisis πŸ™. It's heartbreaking to hear Ali and Raymond sharing their struggles... we really need Congress to step up and find a long-term solution ASAP πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I'm not buying that everyone who relies on SNAP benefits is just being dramatic. Like, come on... we all know people are struggling to make ends meet already. This shutdown isn't going to magically fix everything. And honestly, those "dire warnings" from the soup kitchen patrons sound like just a normal day in the life of someone struggling to get by. We need to stop making this about being "compassionate" and start making decisions that benefit the most vulnerable people. πŸ€‘

The government shutdown is really taking a toll on people struggling to get by πŸ€•. It's heartbreaking to think about families having to choose between paying for food or insuring their kids' healthcare - it's just not right 😒. I'm so glad the court ordered emergency funds to be released, but now there's still uncertainty over when and how much people will receive πŸ€”. The fact that the White House won't comment on the issue is really frustrating too - shouldn't they at least acknowledge the crisis? πŸ™„

the whole thing is super messed up 🀯, especially for those who are already struggling to get by. I mean, imagine not knowing how you're gonna feed your kids next month, that's just devastating. it's like they're choosing between paying rent and putting food on the table. and now this latest news about only partial payments? it's like they're playing a game of roulette with people's lives πŸ€Ίβ€β™€οΈ. I'm all for holding those in power accountable, but at what cost? can't we just get some answers instead of more uncertainty? and what about the ones who don't have a voice, you know? the single moms working multiple jobs just to make ends meet? they're the ones who need help the most πŸ’”. anyway, it's clear that Washington is getting its priorities all wrong if this is how they're handling something so basic πŸ™„.

πŸ€• I'm literally livid thinking about those families having to choose between feeding their kids and paying for car insurance πŸš—πŸ’Έ. It's like the government is putting people in a impossible spot, and it's just not right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that Congressmember Yvette Clarke and Assemblymember Monique Chandler-Waterman were there showing some support is a good start, but more needs to be done ⏱️. It's heartbreaking to hear those stories about people struggling to access food banks due to living in shelters 🀯. We need to do better as a society, especially when it comes to supporting our most vulnerable families πŸ‘ͺ.

πŸ€” I think its really concerning that people are having to choose between feeding their kids and paying for car insurance. Its not just about the money, its about the stress and uncertainty thats being caused by the government shutdown. A lot of these families are already struggling to make ends meet, and now they're facing the possibility of losing access to food and healthcare. We should be working towards a solution ASAP, not dragging this out and causing more harm πŸ€•

😩 This shutdown is getting crazy! 🀯 I'm so worried about these families who are struggling to put food on the table. It's like, come on, can't we all just get along? πŸ˜” The fact that people are having to choose between paying for their kids' insurance or buying groceries is just heartbreaking. We need some real leadership here and a solution ASAP! πŸ’ͺ What's going on with the White House not commenting on this? It's like they're just ignoring the problem πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. We can't just leave these families to fend for themselves, we need to do something! πŸ‘Š

Ugh, this shutdown is crazy 😩. I mean, can't they just get along? The people affected by this are already struggling, having to choose between food and healthcare for their families πŸ€•. It's like, what kind of system are we living in where politicians can't even agree on how to help the most vulnerable? πŸ™„ This is why I think we need to get some non-partisan solutions going πŸ’‘, you know, just to make sure everyone's basic needs are met. And what's up with the partial payments, like they're trying to keep people in limbo indefinitely? πŸ€” It's not right, fam πŸ˜•. We should be working together as a country, not pitting one group against another πŸ‘Š.

omg yaaas AG Letitia James is on point!! πŸ™Œ i mean, who else is gonna speak up for those struggling in need? the pics of ppl lining up at soup kitchens are straight heartbreaking 🀯 & fam it's not just about food, it's about healthcare too! people gotta be able to put a roof over their heads & feed their kids without worrying if they'll get cut off. i'm low-key freaking out thinking about all these families stuck in this limbo πŸ•°οΈ lets hope the White House starts listening soon 🀞

man its heartbreaking what's gonna happen to ppl who already struggling its not just about the money its about survival they gotta feed their kids n stuff u feel me its like washington forgets they got a human cost attached 2 every decision πŸ€•

I don’t usually comment but... the situation is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. I mean, these people are literally fighting over what to put on their plates at home, and we're talking about basic necessities like food and healthcare. It's crazy that it has to come to this in the first place. I'm not a politician, but it seems like common sense would dictate that they find a way to resolve this funding issue ASAP. The fact that the White House is being super tight-lipped about it is just adding fuel to the fire πŸš’. What's going on over there? Can't we all just get along and work towards something better for everyone? 🀞

🀯 just think about it, 1 in 7 people in NYC live below poverty line and now we got families with kids who can't afford food πŸ”πŸ‘Ά, like Ali McKinnon said "we don't need that right now" πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ and Raymond Cuevas had to choose between car insurance & food for his family πŸš—πŸ΄, how's that supposed to work? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

anyway, stats show 63% of families relying on SNAP are living in poverty πŸ”₯ and 45% have kids under 18 πŸ‘§πŸ½πŸ‘¦πŸ», can't the gov just get it together? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ we're talking emergency funding here, where's the plan? πŸ“Š

here's some more info: SNAP recipients on avg spend 70% of their income on food 🍴 and 85% have medical bills πŸ₯, what are they supposed to do when there's no money for either? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ federal shutdown & partial payments = a recipe for disaster 🚨

USDA says 1 in 4 SNAP recipients are living with food insecurity πŸ”πŸ‘€ and 25% have limited access to healthcare πŸ₯, how's that even possible in 2025? 🀯 we need action now! πŸ’ͺ

man... this is getting crazy 🀯 the gov't shutdown is having such a devastating impact on people's lives, especially low-income families who are struggling just to survive πŸ™ SNAP benefits are literally the difference between feeding their kids or not πŸ”πŸ‘Ά i feel so bad for these ppl, living in shelters and relying on food banks because they couldn't qualify for the program πŸ€• and now the gov't is gonna only give partial payments? what kinda crazy logic is that? πŸ˜‚ the admin should just be transparent about their plans instead of dodging questions πŸ‘€ yikes

omg what's going on with these gov shutdowns?! they keep sayin we need to cut costs but can't even figure out how to help ppl who are already strugglin πŸ™„

i mean i feel bad for everyone waitin in line 4 food but why did it take a court order 2 make the trum admin use emergency funds? shouldn't they've just fixed this already?! 😑

and now they're issuin partial payments it's like they r playin a game of russian roulette wit people's lives 🀯 how much longer can ppl afford 2 survive on reduced benefits?

i'm low-key worried bout all these families who gotta choose between healthcare 4 their kids or food 4 the week i feel so bad 4 them πŸ˜”

πŸ˜” omg can u even imagine havin to choose between payin for ur kid's meds or gettin food 4 ur fam? 🀯 its like the goverment dont care bout ppl strugglin 2 make ends meet... SNAP benefits r not just about food, its about survival πŸ’€ and these ppl is losin hope every day cuz washington is all like "nope, ur on ur own" 😑 meanwhile james & Clarke & chandler-waterman is over there tryna put a voice 4 the ppl who dont have one πŸ™ can we pls just get somethin done already?! πŸ’”

omg u guys can't believe what's happening rn in the usa 🀯 the shutdown is getting out of control & people are struggling so much!!! i feel like we're back to the 90s with all these government issues & no one knows what's gonna happen next 😩 it's like, come on washington, sort it out already! and SNAP benefits? that's just basic human rights stuff πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ letitia james is doin her part but u gotta wonder when we'll get some answers from the trump admin πŸ™„

I agree that the situation is super concerning, but I'm also kinda worried about how the government's going to manage the payments... The idea of partial payments just seems so unfair to me πŸ€”. Like, families are already struggling and now they're getting less than what they need? It's like taking away their safety net during a really bad storm.

I think it's awesome that AG James is speaking out, but at the same time, I wish more people in Washington were having these kinds of conversations about the human impact of their decisions 🀝. We need some solutions that aren't just band-aids or temporary fixes... I'm all for finding a way to make this work, but we can't keep going on like this πŸ’Έ.

ummm come on dont blame the white house its not that simple ... lets say they did wanna help but trump is being super tight lipped about it lol thats what happens when u got ppl like him making decisions for u πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ anyway SNAP benefits shouldnt be a political game to be played with people's lives. its time 4 them 2 sort it out ASAP

πŸ€• The Trump admin is playing politics with people's lives πŸ™„. They're all talk no action. This is a disaster waiting to happen 🚨. Those struggling are just trying to survive, they don't need some policy debate 😩. A partial payment is still better than nothing πŸ’Έ. But let's be real, how long will it take for the full payment to kick in? Months? Years? The uncertainty alone is stressing people out πŸ˜“. We need concrete answers from our leaders ASAP ⏰.
