LIV Golf to change to 72-hole format from 2026 season

LIV Golf is set to adopt a 72-hole format for its events starting from the 2026 season. The move will put LIV in line with the established tours in golf, where most tournaments currently consist of four rounds.

The decision marks a significant change for LIV, which was launched in 2022 with a 54-hole format and took its name from the Roman numeral for 54 - LIV. However, this format had been criticized by players and fans alike, who argued that it didn't provide enough competition or challenge.

In response to the criticism, Jon Rahm, two-time major winner and LIV team captain, expressed his support for the change, saying it's a win for the league and the players. "LIV Golf is a player's league," he said. "We are competitors to the core and we want every opportunity to compete at the highest level and to perfect our craft."

The 72-hole format will be contested from Thursday of tournament weeks, except for a Wednesday start for February's LIV Golf Riyadh event. The team competition will continue to run concurrently, with each team's cumulative individual stroke play scores determining the team result.

LIV's decision to adopt the 4-round format has been seen as a major step towards gaining recognition by the official golf rankings. The move could help boost the league's reputation and provide more opportunities for players to compete at the highest level.

However, some have questioned whether this change will ultimately benefit LIV Golf's quest for recognition. Critics argue that the team format may compromise individual performances, which has been a sticking point when it comes to getting LIV on the official rankings.

In any case, the 72-hole format marks a significant shift in LIV's approach and could have far-reaching implications for the league.

πŸ€” I gotta say, it's about time LIV Golf got its act together... or at least changed its format to something that doesn't make players look like they're stuck in some sort of bizarre experiment πŸ™ƒ. The 54-hole thing was always gonna be a no-go, but hey, kudos to Jon Rahm for finally listening to the haters 🎯. Now we just gotta see if this new format will actually help LIV Golf gain some real credibility... or if it's just another PR stunt 😏.

I'm low-key excited about LIV Golf ditching that weird 54-hole format 🀯. I mean, it makes sense they'd want to level up and make it more legit like the other tours. Now we'll get to see some proper golf with four rounds ⛳️. It's a win for Jon Rahm and his team, but I'm curious if this change will actually help LIV gain more recognition πŸ€”. And what about the individual performances? Will that take a hit or can they still shine in the new format?

OMG, can't believe LIV Golf is finally catching up with the rest of the golf tour world 🀯! I mean, adopting that 4-round format was gonna be a game-changer (pun intended) for this league. It's like they took a page outta the playbook from those major tournaments – now players are actually gonna get to test their skills over more rounds and it's all about perfecting their craft 🎯! And, honestly, Jon Rahm is totally on point with that "player's league" vibe πŸ’ͺ... I'm hyped for this new direction! πŸŽ‰

I think its gonna be pretty cool to see LIV Golf go 4 rounds now lol! πŸ€” i mean, yeah, its still gonna be super competitive and all that jazz but now we might actually get to see some real golf being played out there. Jon Rahm's got a point too, it is a players league and all that, so if everyone gets to compete at the highest level then im all for it πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈ

OMG u guys!! 🀩 I'm so hyped for LIV Golf!!! πŸ‘ They're finally switching to a 72-hole format! It's about time, tbh πŸ™„ The 54-hole thing was super lame and didn't make sense πŸ€” And now they're aligning with the big boys in golf 🌟 It's gonna be so much more competitive and players are gonna love it πŸ’― Jon Rahm is totes right, LIV Golf is all about the players! πŸ™Œ We need to see these guys compete at their best and perfect their game ⚑️ The team format might be cool, but I'm all about individual performances πŸ”₯ Can't wait to see how this new format shakes things up in golf πŸŽ‰

I'm thinking... maybe this change will be good for LIV Golf? I mean, most tours are doing 4 rounds, so it's only fair that they switch to consistency. And if players like Jon Rahm support it, that's a big plus πŸ€”. On the other hand, some people might miss the shorter format... but hey, more holes can't hurt, right? πŸ˜‚ It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Will LIV Golf start to get recognized by the golfing community? Only time will tell ⏰

omg i cant even believe liv golf is finally changin to a 4 round format πŸ™Œ like can u imagine how epic it'll be watchin jon rahm crushin in all those rounds πŸ˜‚ anyway i think this move is a major win for the league and the players it's gonna be so much more competitive now we get to see our guys go toe to toe every single week πŸ’ͺ and idk about critics sayin the team format might hurt individual scores but imma take liv golf over any old tour any day πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

i'm kinda surprised they're making this change now πŸ€”... i mean, liv golf was always about shaking things up, but adopting a more traditional 4-round format feels like a step in the right direction πŸ’ͺ? it's gonna be interesting to see how this affects the competition and individual performances - will we finally get to see some of those big-name players shine on their own? 🀞

The 72-hole format is gonna be a game changer for LIV Golf 🀯! I mean, it's about time they switched from that weird 54-hole format that was just so...meh 😴. Players like Jon Rahm are all for it too, which is cool because he's one of the top players in the league πŸ’ͺ.

It'll be interesting to see how this change affects the team competition aspect πŸ€”. I'm not sure if individual performances will suffer or if the team aspect will take a backseat πŸ”΄. But hey, at least they're trying to get recognized by the official golf rankings πŸ“ˆ! LIV Golf is still growing, but this move is definitely a step in the right direction πŸ’¨.

Can't wait to see how it all plays out πŸ’₯. Maybe we'll finally see some of those talented players taking home major wins πŸ†?
