London zoo boss quits amid claims of 'unacceptable workplace behaviour'

Former Diplomat Matthew Gould Quits London Zoo Amid Investigation into Workplace Behaviour

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which operates London zoo and Whipsnade zoo in Bedfordshire, has lost its top boss amid allegations of "unacceptable workplace behaviour". Matthew Gould, a 54-year-old former diplomat who is a close friend of George Osborne, resigned as chief executive last week after an investigation into his conduct found that it fell below the standards expected by the organization.

Gould's departure comes at a difficult time for ZSL, which is facing financial cuts and looking to reduce costs. The organization had launched a voluntary redundancy scheme earlier this month in an effort to save ยฃ2m annually. Gould had previously stated that he could not rule out compulsory redundancies but was doing everything possible to avoid them.

According to reports, Gould's departure was prompted by the investigation into his workplace behaviour, which included complaints from staff members. ZSL's chair of trustees, Jim Smith, confirmed in a letter to staff that the investigation found Gould's conduct fell below the standards expected and that he resigned before it could be completed.

Smith stated that the organization is committed to living up to its values and ensuring a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace for everyone. The current interim chief executive will lead the organization with honesty, integrity, and accountability at its heart.

Gould's past includes high-profile roles in government, including private secretary for foreign affairs in Downing Street and ambassador to Israel. He had previously spoken about the challenges of working under intense public scrutiny during the pandemic and stated that he could not see himself doing anything else besides his work at ZSL.

OMG what a mess ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, a former diplomat who's always been in high-profile roles just quits as head of London zoo amid all these workplace behaviour allegations... it's wild how quickly things can fall apart, especially when there's an investigation going on ๐Ÿ’ฅ. Can you imagine having to navigate those financial cuts and staff redundancies while dealing with personal drama like this? I feel bad for the current interim CEO - they're gonna have their hands full trying to keep everything together ๐Ÿ™. ZSL needs a fresh start ASAP, not just for themselves but also for the animals ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜• So I'm seeing this news about Matthew Gould quitting London zoo, and I gotta say, it's kinda shocking ๐Ÿค”. As a huge animal lover, I love how zoos are supposed to be all about education and conservation, but if someone in charge is being really toxic ๐Ÿ‘Ž, that just messes everything up.

I mean, who needs ambassadors making everyone feel uncomfortable? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ We should be inspiring empathy for animals and people alike! ๐Ÿ And now London zoo has a leadership vacuum... what's gonna happen to the adorable pandas and monkeys? ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

ZSL's trying to save ยฃ2m, but I'm worried about all the unnecessary drama this whole thing is causing ๐Ÿค‘. Can't they just focus on saving animals instead of having office politics? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Let's hope whoever takes over can make things right and create a more positive environment for everyone! ๐ŸŒŸ

awww man i feel bad 4 matt gould ๐Ÿ˜” he seemed like such a nice guy n all but i guess we can't make excuses 4 ppl who abuse their power n mess up the workplace ๐Ÿค• zsl's gotta take responsibility n make sure they're creating a safe n respectful environment 4 everyone ๐Ÿ™ especially during these tough times w/ financial cuts ๐Ÿค‘ hope jim smith n the new interim ceo r doin what's best 4 the org n its staff ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ˜ฌ Just heard that Matthew Gould is out as CEO of London Zoo... like, what's going on? ๐Ÿ’ Can't say I'm surprised though, rumors have been swirling around him for ages. Workplace behavior issues can be super tricky to navigate, especially when you're in a high-profile role like that. ๐Ÿค On the one hand, it's great that ZSL is taking steps to ensure everyone feels safe and respected. ๐Ÿ‘ But at the same time, I feel bad for Gould - he was clearly passionate about his work and had some pretty cool roles under his belt. ๐ŸŒŽ Wonder if this will affect the zoo's finances? They're already going through a tough time... ๐Ÿ’ธ

just read about matthew gould quitting london zoo ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜ฌ can't believe what's going on at zsl, first they're cutting costs left and right, then their top guy gets accused of all sorts of unacceptable behavior... seems like a perfect storm of drama ๐ŸŒช๏ธ anyway, i'm not surprised he got caught out, gould was always a bit of a mysterious figure to me, but i guess you can't hide behind diplomacy forever ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ and now they're saying zsl is committed to living up to its values... yeah right ๐Ÿ™„ let's see how that plays out.

omg like what's going on with london zoo ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜ฑ i feel bad for the staff who have to deal with this kinda stuff but at the same time its good they're making a change so maybe new CEO will bring some fresh ideas to save the place ๐ŸŒŸ anyway gotta wonder how someone who used to be ambassador to israel ends up in zoology lol didnt expect that tho

idk man... like, you think a former diplomat quiting a zoo because some staff members complained about him? seems kinda weird to me ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ  but on the other hand... shouldn't ppl be able to do their job w/o being harassed by coworkers? i mean, doesn't that just suck? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

i guess its also good that zsl is taking these allegations seriously and is all about living up to its values now ๐Ÿ‘. but at the same time... Gould's got a pretty sweet past & ppl r already hating on him ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ what if he was just trying to keep his job & didn't wanna deal w/ all that drama? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

anywayz, i guess thats just the way it goes sometimes... u can't please everyone, right? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜

dunno what's goin on here... first, it's a bigwig diplomat quittin the zoo job, then they're losin staff left and right due to "financial cuts"... sounds like a cover-up to me ๐Ÿค”... Gould was close to some heavy hitters, like Osborne, so I'm thinkin there might be more to this story than just some bad workplace behavior... what's really goin on behind the scenes? ๐Ÿค‘

Can you imagine a former diplomat, who's seen it all, slinking away from a zoo? I mean, it's not like they're exactly saving the world from extinction over there... Still, gotta respect the organization for taking action and making sure their workplace is all about respect and inclusivity. Poor Matthew Gould, must've gotten caught up in his own ego and thought he was above accountability . Guess that's what happens when you go from being a top diplomat to leading a zoo ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ผ

๐Ÿค” This is such a shame ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ˜ข. I mean, you'd think someone with Matthew Gould's background would know better ๐Ÿ’ผ. I don't blame the zoo for taking action though - everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their workplace ๐Ÿ™. It's just a really tough time for them right now, what with all the financial stuff going on ๐Ÿ“Š. And to be honest, it's kinda weird that he was trying to avoid redundancies but then resigns before the investigation is even done ๐Ÿ”ช. Guess you can't rule out personal circumstances getting in the way of professional conduct sometimes? Anyway, I do hope they find a new CEO soon and get back on track ๐Ÿš‚!
