Magic wears off in ‘Wicked: For Good’ - Detroit Metro Times

A disappointing follow-up, "Wicked: For Good" fails to live up to the magic of its predecessor. The film's attempt to subvert the classic tale of "The Wizard of Oz" falls flat, instead resorting to a shallow and forgettable exploration of dark themes.

Director Jon M. Chu's vision is undermined by a narrative that struggles to make sense of its own intentions. Does the film aim to revere or demystify the original? The result is a jarring and inconsistent viewing experience that fails to deliver on either front.

One of the biggest problems is the lack of character development, particularly in the second half of the story. The love triangle between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Galinda (Ariana Grande), and Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) feels forced and rushed, with none of the songs memorable enough to leave a lasting impression.

The film's sets and design are beautifully realized, but even these cannot save "Wicked: For Good" from its overall lack of depth. The movie's themes of resistance against fascism feel shallow and overly simplistic, making it difficult to invest in the story.

In short, "Wicked: For Good" is a missed opportunity to create something truly special. While fans of the first film may still find some enjoyment, the sequel's failure to live up to expectations makes it a disappointing follow-up to a beloved classic.

I completely disagree with this critic 😒, I think they're being way too harsh on the film! The dark themes are what make "Wicked: For Good" stand out from your typical Hollywood rom-coms 🤷‍♂️. It's bold and refreshing to see a story tackle real issues like fascism in a fantasy world.

I also think the love triangle is well-intentioned, even if it does feel forced at times ❤️. And have you seen the sets? They're stunning! The film's design team outdid themselves 🎨. And let's not forget, Cynthia Erivo slays as Elphaba 😍 - she deserves an Oscar for this performance alone!

The themes of resistance might be simplistic to some, but that's what makes it so accessible and inspiring 💪. It's a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can stand up for what we believe in.

I'd rather call "Wicked: For Good" a thought-provoking, visually stunning masterpiece than a disappointing follow-up 🎥💫

Ugh, I'm soooo underwhelmed by this one 🤔♀️! I mean, who tries to subvert a classic like Oz and just ends up muddling everything? 😩 The love triangle is literally cringeworthy - it's like they took every cheesy teen drama cliche and mashed them all together. And don't even get me started on the themes... it feels like they just threw in some generic "resistance against fascism" nonsense without actually exploring it in any meaningful way 🙄.

And, honestly, Cynthia Erivo deserves so much better than this mess 😭. She brought Elphaba to life in the first film and I was expecting more from her here. The sets are gorgeous, though - that Emerald City is straight fire 💎! Still, all in all, it's a total disappointment compared to the original 🤕.

omg, the ratings for this movie are straight fire 🚀 27% on Rotten Tomatoes? that's like, really low even by superhero flick standards 😅 and the box office numbers aren't looking great either - $55M domestic opening is a far cry from the $100M+ of its predecessor 💸 did you see the trailer? it was SO bland 🙄 1 in 5 people on IMDB are giving it 2/10, yikes 😱 stats:

* average rating: 3.4/10
* audience score: 34%
* critic score: 21%
* worldwide box office: $170M (vs $480M for the original)
* streaming views: 12M+ in 1 week (not bad, but still a drop from the original) 📊

lol what happened 2 this movie?! i was hyped fer "Wicked: For Good" but now im just shook cuz its like they took everythin that made the first one special & threw it out the window 🤯. i mean, i love Cynthia Erivo but even she cant save dis mess 🤷‍♀️. the love triangle was so rushed & forgettable, it was like watchin a high school production of wick3d 🎭. set design was on point tho, thats 1 thing they got rite 💯

🤔 I'm not too sure why everyone's so down about this one... I mean, I've seen it and yeah, it's not as magical as the first one 🎬. But hey, it's still got some great songs and those sets are 🔥! The themes of resistance against fascism might be a bit heavy-handed, but I guess that's what they're going for? And let's be real, Cynthia Erivo is always amazing 🤩. Maybe not everyone will love this sequel, but to me, it's still worth watching... even if it's not the masterpiece some people expected 😊.

I'm so underwhelmed by this Wicked sequel 🤔... I mean, I love Cynthia Erivo, she slayed as Elphaba in the first one, but here she's just not given enough to work with. And don't even get me started on that love triangle, it felt like they took a page from Titanic and made Galinda and Prince Fiyero's romance all sappy and unconvincing 🙄... The movie's trying too hard to be edgy and cool, but ends up being just a mess. And I'm really disappointed because I was hoping for so much more 🤷‍♀️. It's like they took the magic of Wicked and replaced it with some shallow attempt at being "woke". Can we get back to making movies that are actually good? 😩

Ugh I just watched this movie and was so underwhelmed 🤦‍♀️. I mean I love Ariana Grande but her part in this felt so random and like she wasn't even supposed to be there? And Cynthia Erivo is usually fire, but Elphaba's character just got watered down here. The whole story feels like a mess and the song choices were so weird 🎵. I was expecting more depth and emotional resonance, especially since they're tackling dark themes. It's a shame because Wicked is such an amazing musical, it deserved better than this.

OMG u guys wot happened 2 Wicked: For Good?? 🤯 It's like they took everythin we loved about Oz and just...phoned it in? I mean, i got chills during that 1 scene where Dorothy falls down the well but after dat, i was all meh. The love triangle was so forced i felt like i was watchin a bad high school musical 🎤 Ariana Grande s voice is no match 4 Cynthia Erivos powerful vocals 😒 And don't even get me started on the themes of resistance...like, where's the depth? It's just so...simplistic. The only thing that saved it 4 me was the set design but dat's not enuf 🤷‍♀️ Overall, a total miss 🎭

🤔 I'm so underwhelmed by this movie 🎥😔 I mean, I loved Wicked when I saw it on stage and was super excited to see an adaptation but... honestly, I felt like they took all the magic away 🧚‍♀️😢. The story feels so disjointed and just doesn't know what it wants to be 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the love triangle 😳 it's just so... forced. I didn't find any of the songs memorable 🎶👎. Even with gorgeous sets and design, it can't save this movie from feeling shallow 💔. I was hoping for a deeper exploration of those themes they mentioned but instead we get some pretty generic messages about standing up against stuff 😐. Overall, I'm just really disappointed in this sequel 🤕

I was really looking forward to this one... 😐 The problem with sequels is that they can't quite recapture the magic of the original, and I think this one tried too hard to do just that 🤔 It's like trying to recreate a favorite childhood memory - it's not the same as experiencing it for the first time. Anyway, I was disappointed by the lack of depth in the story, especially with Elphaba's character development... felt like we were supposed to care about her struggle but it didn't really resonate 🎭 The sets and design were lovely though! 👏

I was really hyped for this one 😐... I loved the first Wicked movie and couldn't wait to see what they'd come up with next. But, honestly, this second one just didn't deliver 💔. The love triangle in the middle of the story felt so rushed and forced - like they were trying to fit too many songs into it. And don't even get me started on how shallow the themes of resistance against fascism are 🤕. I mean, can't we do better than that? The sets and design were still super cool tho 👏... but overall, this one just felt like a missed opportunity 💔

🤔 I was really looking forward to this movie too... I mean, who doesn't love a good musical? But honestly, I was underwhelmed by "Wicked: For Good". The whole thing just felt so... predictable. Like they took all the best parts of the original and just phoned it in. And don't even get me started on the lack of depth. I mean, come on, can't we explore some real issues instead of just hitting you over the head with simplistic messages about resisting fascism? 🙄 The music was okay, I guess, but nothing special. Overall, I'd say this one's a skippable sequel... sad for fans of the original, tbh 😐

🤔 Movie magic gone sour 🎥😐 I just watched Wicked: For Good and I'm so underwhelmed 😴 The dark themes were supposed to add depth but it felt like the filmmakers didn't know how to execute them properly 💡 Their attempt at subverting The Wizard of Oz fell flat on its face 🤦‍♀️ And don't even get me started on the love triangle 🙄 It was so rushed and unconvincing! 😒 Beautiful sets and all, but that's not enough to save this movie from being a total disappointment 😔

I'm really underwhelmed by this Wicked sequel 🤔♀️ I mean, I loved the original but this one just feels like they took every cool thing about Oz and just kinda...meh'd it 😐 The sets are gorgeous as always tho! 🌹 But honestly, what's with all these dark themes? It feels so forced and unearned 🤷‍♀️ And don't even get me started on that love triangle lol what happened to the magic? 🧙‍♂️

I just saw this movie and honestly I'm so underwhelmed 🤔... I mean I love Ariana Grande but she didn't bring anything new to her character Galinda, it felt like the same old girl we all know from the first movie 🎬. And Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba was kinda overshadowed by the lack of depth in the story 🌪️. The sets were gorgeous tho! 🏰 I guess what I'm saying is if they had taken more time to develop the characters and story, it could've been a real winner 💔

idk why they put Ariana Grande in this role she sounds more like a pop star than Elphaba 🤷‍♀️🎶 and Cynthia Erivo is way better for that part, can't believe they didn't cast her again 😔 anyway, the sets and design are on point, but overall, it's just not the same magic as the first one 📺💔

I just watched "Wicked: For Good" and I gotta say, it's like a sinking ship 🚨😐. The box office numbers are already looking pretty bleak, with a worldwide gross of $150 million, which is way lower than the first film's $400 million 📊. And let's talk about that fanbase... ticket sales for the movie have been averaging around 30% capacity 🎟️, which is basically empty seats. The critics are also trash-talking it hard, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 22% 🤕.

But what really gets me is the cast's disappointment 🤷‍♀️. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both deserved so much better than this 🎭. And Jonathan Bailey... poor guy was stuck in that love triangle forever 💘. The sets, though... oh man, those sets were straight fire 🔥! Maybe if they'd put more effort into the story, we wouldn't be seeing a sequel flop like this.

Here's a quick comparison of the two films' performance:

Wicked (2019)
* Worldwide gross: $422 million
* Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%
* IMDb rating: 7.5/10

Wicked: For Good (2023)
* Worldwide gross: $150 million
* Rotten Tomatoes score: 22%
* IMDb rating: 4.8/10

I mean, can you imagine if they'd put more thought into the story? We might be looking at a sequel that's actually worth watching 😴!

I just watched Wicked: For Good and I gotta say... what happened to the magic?! 😔 The whole thing felt like they took a bunch of cool ideas and threw 'em in a blender without actually blending 'em together into something cohesive. The sets were fire, no doubt about it, but the story just didn't deliver. I mean, come on, who thought it was a good idea to make Elphaba's love life so super rushed? It felt like they were trying too hard to fit in all these themes and emotions without actually exploring them properly. And don't even get me started on how shallow those themes of resistance against fascism are. I'm all for standing up against oppression, but when you do it with such a light hand, it just feels like an afterthought. Overall, I was really let down by this movie... 🤕
