Man Arrested in Brutal Stabbing Attack at Manhattan Subway Station
A 28-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning, charged with assault for his role in a violent stabbing attack that left a 51-year-old victim injured. The incident occurred last week at the Broadway-Lafayette station in SoHo, where two strangers got into an argument before one of them attacked the other.
According to police, Dariel Castillo approached the 51-year-old man and stabbed him multiple times in the back. First responders rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released in stable condition.
Castillo, who lives in a New York City Housing Authority building in East Harlem, is believed to have acted on impulse, rather than out of any premeditated plan. Police officials say that Castillo and the victim were complete strangers who simply got into a heated argument before things escalated.
The incident has raised concerns about rising transit crime in the city. According to data released by the NYPD, crimes involving transit are up around 10% so far this year compared to the same point last year. Felony assaults make up the majority of these incidents, with over 50 reported through February 1st.
In a particularly disturbing incident that occurred just hours after the stabbing attack, another teenager was allegedly stabbed on a J train in the same precinct. The victim, a 15-year-old boy, was also taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition after being stabbed in his buttocks.

And now we're seeing more and more of these attacks happening on our trains... yeah, it's like we should just carry umbrellas or something to protect ourselves from all you crazy people out there! 
But seriously though, 10% increase in transit crimes is wild. Can't say I'm surprised tho, considering how sketchy some parts of the city can be at night. Anyway, let's hope our transit cops get a handle on it and we can all just chill until then

It's so scary for everyone else too, especially commuters who are trying to get from point A to point B without getting hurt or mugged. I'm glad the victim survived but it's still super disturbing that this happened in broad daylight. And now another teenager got stabbed just hours later? Like, what is going on with our city right now? 
We need to do something about the rising transit crime and make sure everyone feels safe when they're using public transportation 
This is just getting out of hand 
. Can't we focus on fixing our tech instead of dealing with this transit chaos 
? I mean, have you seen those new contactless payment systems? Not working right 
. And don't even get me started on the whole "smart" subway system that's supposed to improve safety but really just seems like a bunch of hype 
. Can't we invest in something that actually works instead of trying to revolutionize everything at once?
