Manchester United manager news: Michael Carrick appointed caretaker head coach

Manchester United have appointed former player Michael Carrick as their caretaker head coach until the end of the season, with Steve Holland as his assistant.

Carrick, 44, will be back in charge for Saturday's Premier League derby against Manchester City and has impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox with his vision for the team.

The former United midfielder had a three-game stint as temporary boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal in 2021. He is expected to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, moving away from the 3-4-3 system employed by Ruben Amorim.

Carrick will be supported by Holland, who has worked under Gareth Southgate and had success with Chelsea and England. Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion are also part of his staff.

Fletcher took charge as caretaker boss for two matches after United sacked Amorim on 5 January but is set to return to the under-18s to continue his development.

The appointment of Michael Carrick as Manchester United's caretaker head coach until the end of the season is a fascinating development πŸ€”. As an astute observer, I believe this move speaks volumes about the club's willingness to reassess their strategy and inject new life into the team πŸ’ͺ. With his managerial stint in 2021, Carrick has already proven himself capable of navigating complex tactical situations and making informed decisions under pressure πŸ”₯. The fact that he'll be adopting a 4-2-3-1 formation is an intriguing shift from Amorim's 3-4-3 system, which may help to revitalize the team's attacking play ⚽️. It's also interesting to note that Carrick has clearly won over the support of key stakeholders like Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, demonstrating his ability to connect with those at the top πŸ’Ό. Overall, I'm optimistic about United's chances under Carrick's guidance πŸ‘

I gotta say, I'm all about giving Michael Carrick a break πŸ€”. People are quick to judge him, like he's not qualified enough or whatever. Newsflash: experience counts for a lot! He was a top player for United and now he's trying to do the same job from the other side of the pitch. Plus, 4-2-3-1 is a solid formation that'll bring out the best in the squad πŸ†. And let's be real, Steve Holland is no joke - he's got some serious pedigree under his belt πŸ‘Š. I'm not saying Carrick will be the next Pep Guardiola or anything (although wouldn't that be awesome πŸ˜‚), but I think he's been unfairly maligned. He's a fan favourite and deserves a chance to prove himself πŸ‘.

So like, I gotta say, I'm pretty surprised that they're gonna go with Carrick as their new interim boss πŸ€”. I mean, he's got a good track record and all that, but it feels like they're reaching out to the past, you know? Like, he was in charge before, and that ended badly for him... still, I guess you can't judge a book by its cover 😊. The fact that Steve Holland is coming with him is a plus though - he's got some serious experience under his belt πŸ‘. 4-2-3-1 is gonna be an interesting formation to see them play in... might just work out, we'll see πŸ’‘

man i think this is a great move by man utd 🀩 carrick's back and he's bringing that experience and know how to the team, plus holland's coming in with some top class management skills from england u20s and chelsea, so im hoping we can get our season back on track πŸš€ 4-2-3-1 formation could be really effective, not sure about ditching 3-4-3 tho 😐 anyway, fingers crossed for saturday's derby match against city πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

Man U's new setup has me intrigued πŸ€”. I mean, Carrick's a legend of the club and all, but have you seen his tactical record since taking over as caretaker in 2021? Not exactly raking it in πŸ”΄βš½οΈ. Still, it's good to see him getting another chance. Maybe this time around he'll be able to get the team playing like they did under Fergie πŸ†.

I'm also loving the appointment of Steve Holland as his assistant πŸ‘. The guy's got some serious experience and knows how to win. I think with Carrick's passion for the game and Holland's tactical know-how, we might just see a resurgence at Old Trafford πŸ”₯. Plus, it'll be cool to see Fletcher get back into coaching and develop those young players 😊.

omg can't wait to see carrick in action πŸ€©πŸ”΄ he's gonna bring so much energy and passion to the team!!! i'm loving the sound of that 4-2-3-1 formation it's a great change and i think they'll do really well against man city πŸ˜„ carrick has such great vision for the game and he knows what it takes to win. fingers crossed he can bring some much needed stability to the team πŸ’ͺπŸ”΅

OMG, I'm SO stoked!!! Michael Carrick back in charge at Old Trafford πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ˜! He's gonna bring that winning mentality back to United and crush City on Saturday 🎯πŸ’ͺ! The 4-2-3-1 formation is a genius move, trust me! 😎 Carrick knows what it takes to win big, he's one of the greatest players ever played for United! πŸ’₯ And with Steve Holland by his side, we got this! ⚽️ Let's go Red Devils! πŸ”΄

🀯 I mean come on... Michael Carrick? Really? After his stint in 2021, you'd think they'd look elsewhere. But I guess desperation sets in when your squad's not getting the results you want πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The thing is, he does have a good track record with the under-18s and all that. Still, it's a risk... big time 😬. They need someone who can turn things around ASAP if they want to avoid a total meltdown. 4-2-3-1 formation? Is that meant to be some kind of clever ploy? It sounds like just another tweak πŸ€”. Bring on the City derby, I guess! πŸ†

OMG, like, what's up with all these caretaker head coaches? It's like they're all just trying to get some experience in before they become the real deal! Michael Carrick just slaps together a 4-2-3-1 formation and suddenly everyone's like "oh yeah, this guy knows what he's doing"? I swear, it's like my grandma could manage a football team if she wanted to. But hey, at least the under-18s will get some decent coaching out of Fletcher. Silver linings, right?

omg i cant believe its michael carrick back in charge at man utd!!! πŸ€―πŸ”΄ he always had a good feeling about him as a player and now hes gonna try his hand as gaffer lol... 4-2-3-1 formation tho, thats interesting move away from that 3-4-3 ruben amorim used i wonder how carrick plans to get man utd back on track πŸ€”πŸ‘Š

just read about this news, think carrick's a good choice tho πŸ€”. been out of football for a while and now he's back in charge, might be interesting to see how he does 😊. not sure about the 4-2-3-1 formation tho, wasnt always his style, but i guess you gotta adapt sometimes πŸ’. also good to see fletcher getting some more experience under his belt, hope he develops into a top manager πŸ“ˆ. think the fans will be watching closely on saturday, derby day is always intense πŸ”₯.

man, mick carrick's back in the hot seat πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and i'm lowkey impressed tbh, he actually seems like he knows what he's doing for once πŸ˜…. gonna be 4-2-3-1, yeah that's a departure from ruben's clown show, about time πŸŽ‰. carrick's vision is all over the place but maybe he'll surprise us with some actual footballing brains πŸ’‘. holland's got experience and woodgate's still alive, so fingers crossed that's a winning combo πŸ‘. can't wait to see him take on city, might actually be fun for once 🎊. let's just hope fletcher doesn't get too lost again πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€” I'm not sure about this one, mate... think Carrick's a good choice, but they gotta get some proper top talent in there ASAP or it's gonna be another long season 😐. Still, at least he's got experience and knows the team inside out. And 4-2-3-1? Sounds like a solid plan to me πŸ†. Wonder if this'll give Rashford and Co the boost they need to get back on track πŸ’ͺ

Wow 🀩, I'm loving this move by Man Utd! Michael Carrick back in charge and it's about time they got a proper gaffer who knows the game πŸ˜‚. Impressed that he's got a clear vision for the team already, 4-2-3-1 formation could be just what they need to turn things around πŸ”„. Steve Holland as his right-hand man is a good pick too, been in some big roles before πŸ‘. Now let's see if Carrick can bring home those three points against City on Saturday πŸ†!

man I'm so skeptical about this move... like, Carrick's been out of the game for ages and now he's gonna save Man U from their struggles? πŸ€” it's not like they've had a decent season or anything... and Holland's experience with England is what makes him qualified to handle the likes of City? πŸ™„ still feel like a long shot for United, you know? πŸ’”

The appointment of Michael Carrick as Manchester United's interim head coach has sparked renewed optimism amongst fans 🌟. A man with extensive experience playing under Sir Alex Ferguson, it's no surprise that he's been able to impress the powers-that-be with his tactical acumen πŸ”. The 4-2-3-1 formation is a strategic move away from the 3-4-3 system that had become somewhat stagnant under Ruben Amorim πŸ”„.

It'll be fascinating to see how Carrick implements his vision on the pitch, particularly in their upcoming derby against Manchester City 🏟️. The addition of Steve Holland as assistant coach is also a smart move, given Holland's track record working with Gareth Southgate and Chelsea πŸ”΅. With a strong support staff, including Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion, Carrick should be well-equipped to navigate the challenges ahead 🌈.

Man U's got a new man at the helm πŸ€”, and I gotta say, it's interesting that they went with Michael Carrick as the caretaker head coach πŸ‘Š. He's been around the block a few times, playing for United and all, so hopefully he can bring some stability to the team. The 4-2-3-1 formation sounds like a good change of pace from their old 3-4-3 setup πŸ”„. Fingers crossed it'll pay off against City on Saturday! πŸ˜…

idk how Carrick's gonna do...he was alright as player, but been a long time since he last played professionally πŸ€”. think it's a bit weird they're trusting him with big games so soon tho 😐. holland's got more experience in management than me, so i'll believe when i see πŸ™ƒ. still hope Carrick can turn things around for the lads, cos they need some wins ASAP πŸ’ͺ.
