Manchester United sign Wangerheim, Birmingham make 'statement of intent'

Manchester United has made a significant splash in the women's football transfer market by signing 21-year-old Swedish forward Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby on a contract until June 2029. The move comes as the club looks to bolster its forward line, with Wangerheim set to join teammate Lea Schüller, who signed just last month.

According to United's director of women's football, Matt Johnson, Wangerheim is one of Europe's best young talents, bringing a dynamic and versatile style to the team that will help "maximise her potential." Wangerheim herself was thrilled with the move, stating that it's an "amazing" feeling to be joining such a historic club.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City has broken its club record transfer fee by signing 22-year-old attacking midfielder Wilma Leidhammar from Norrköping for approximately €315,000 ( £273,000). The Swedish youth international arrives as the club looks to make a statement of intent in the Women's Super League (WSL) second tier.

Leidhammar has had success in her youth career, scoring 27 goals and providing 11 assists in Sweden's top division since 2022. Her signing is seen as a significant coup for City, with head coach Amy Merricks stating that it shows "ambition" from the club.

The moves come as United faces uncertainty regarding England midfielder Ella Toone, who is set to be out of action for at least six weeks due to a hip injury. The team's head coach, Marc Skinner, has reassured fans that Toone will return before the end of the season.

As the Women's Champions League playoff against Atlético Madrid approaches, United and Birmingham City will be looking to make a strong statement on the pitch, with their respective new signings poised to play a key role in shaping the teams' futures.

😊 So I'm thinking about these recent signings by Manchester United and Birmingham City... it's like they're both trying to make a big impact in the women's football transfer market! 🚀 But what's got me thinking is that we've been seeing this trend for a while now, where bigger clubs are starting to invest more in their female teams. It's not just about the players themselves, but also about creating a culture and environment that supports them to perform at their best.

Take Ellen Wangerheim from Manchester United, she's clearly an amazing talent, but what makes her signing so significant is the fact that she's now joining a team with a huge squad and resources. It's not just about her individual skills, it's also about how she fits into the team dynamic. And with Lea Schüller already on board, I think they're going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Women's Super League.

On the other hand, Birmingham City's signing of Wilma Leidhammar is like a statement from the club that says "we mean business". It shows ambition and a willingness to invest in their team, which can only be a good thing for the player herself. I think it's exciting to see these clubs taking risks and trying to make a difference in women's football.

But what really gets me is that we're seeing this trend play out just as the Women's Champions League playoff against Atlético Madrid approaches. It's like these teams are setting themselves up for something big, but will they be able to live up to their expectations? 🤔 Only time will tell!

OMG, I'm soooo hyped about Ellen Wangerheim joining Manchester United!!! 🤩 She's like, totally gonna be a game changer for that team! And to think she's only 21... 😍 Lea Schüller is gonna have some serious competition on her hands, but in the best way possible, obvs 💁‍♀️ I mean, who wouldn't want to play alongside Wangerheim and Schüller? The chemistry is already gonna be 🔥! And don't even get me started on Wilma Leidhammar joining Birmingham City... that transfer fee is, like, insane!!! 🤑 I'm loving the ambition from both teams right now. Let's go Manchester United and Birmingham City - let's make some noise in the WSL! 💪

😊 I'm loving the hype around Manchester United signing Ellen Wangerheim! 🤩 She sounds like an amazing player, and it's awesome that they're investing in her talent. I mean, who wouldn't want to join such a historic club like Man U? 😎 But seriously, this move shows that the team is serious about competing at the highest level. And can we talk about Wilma Leidhammar's transfer fee? Like, Birmingham City is breaking records left and right! 💸👏 It's always exciting to see new talent join the league, and I'm looking forward to seeing how these players will impact the season. 🤔

Just saw the news about Manchester United signing Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby 😍👏. Honestly think they've made a great move, she's been doing some sick stuff for her country and I can see her fitting right into their forward line 🤩. On the other hand, Birmingham City breaking its transfer record for Wilma Leidhammar is pretty impressive 💸. Wonder how much of an impact both these new signings will have on their respective teams this season 🤔.

I gotta say tho 😂, 315k for Wilma Leidhammar is kinda steep 🤑. I mean, she's talented and all, but Manchester City already has Schüller, right? 😒 I'm not saying Wilma won't be a game changer, but Birmingham should've gone for someone with more experience. Still can't wait to see these teams go head-to-head in the playoff tho 💪

so they're saying Ellen Wangerheim is one of Europe's best young talents now 🤔? how do we know that for sure tho? what makes her so special? was she scouted by multiple clubs before United stepped in with this huge transfer fee? and isn't €315,000 a pretty penny for a 22-yr-old attacker from Sweden? did Birmingham do some deep research on Wilma Leidhammar or is it just a case of splurging on some Swedish talent 💸

omg i'm so stoked for Manchester United & Birmingham City making these amazing moves!! 🤩 Ellen Wangerheim is literally a superstar and I'm loving the vibe of Lea Schüller joining her too 💖. Wilma Leidhammar's got some serious skills too, like 27 goals in Sweden's top div? 🤯 that's insane! I know Ella Toone's injury is bummer, but I trust Marc Skinner to get her back on the pitch soon 💪. Can't wait for these teams to crush it at the Women's Champions League playoff 😎

OMG, I'm so stoked for Manchester United & Birmingham City 🤩! These signings are literally game changers 💪! Ellen Wangerheim & Wilma Leidhammar are going to bring so much energy & talent to their respective teams, it's going to be amazing to watch 🔥. And I love how both clubs are investing in the future, especially with Wangerheim joining United and scoring 27 goals in Sweden's top division already! 💫 The fact that Birmingham City broke its club record transfer fee is just incredible too... they must be so excited to have Leidhammar on board 😁. Now let's see how these teams perform in the Women's Champions League playoff 🏆💥. Bring it on! 👍

I'm low-key impressed by Manchester United's move for Ellen Wangerheim 😊. She sounds like a game-changer! I love that they're investing in youth talent and trying to build something special for the future.

But, let's be real, Birmingham City just broke their transfer fee record for Wilma Leidhammar 💸. That's some serious cash! It'll be interesting to see how these signings impact the Women's Super League second tier... are we gonna see a competitive season? 🤔

man, can you believe how fast women's football is growing? it feels like just yesterday we were still talking about pioneers like bobby charlton and steve smith 🙌🏽 now we've got superstars like ellen wangerheim and wilma leidhammar lighting up the pitch. i love how united is pushing to sign talented young players and investing in their futures - it's gonna be wild to watch them develop over the next few years 🤯 plus, a €315k fee for birmingham city? that's crazy 💸 but you can't put a price on talent, right? 💫

🤔 Manchester United's move for Ellen Wangerheim raises questions about club investment priorities 🤑. Are they prioritizing youth development or splurging on high-profile transfers? Meanwhile, Birmingham City's record-breaking signing of Wilma Leidhammar suggests a more sustainable approach, focusing on talent retention rather than flashy recruits 💼. It'll be interesting to see how both teams perform in the WSL and the Champions League playoff 🏆.

🌟 Oh my gosh, I am SO stoked for Manchester United and Birmingham City! These moves are literally game changers for both teams 🔄💪. It's amazing to see these clubs investing in their women's football programs and bringing in super talented players like Ellen Wangerheim and Wilma Leidhammar 💥👏. The Women's Champions League playoff is going to be lit 🔥, I just know it! 😁 Can't wait to see these ladies take the pitch by storm and bring home some serious wins 💪🌈

I'm kinda worried about Manchester United signing Ellen Wangerheim 🤔. Don't get me wrong, she sounds like an awesome player and all, but I think they might be overhyped just a bit. Like, 6 years on a contract? That's a long time to invest in one player, you know? And what if she doesn't quite live up to the hype? 🤷‍♀️

Meanwhile, Birmingham City getting Wilma Leidhammar for a decent transfer fee is more like it 🤑. I mean, they're not giving away their shirt or anything, but still, 315k is no joke 💸. And she's already got some experience under her belt, so that's def a plus. Plus, the fact that Amy Merricks is hyping up the signing as "ambition" shows me she knows what she's doing 😊.

It's also pretty interesting to see how this all plays out with Ella Toone being out for a bit 🤕. Like, will Wangerheim be the savior of Manchester United's season? Only time'll tell ⏰

I'm so glad Manchester United is making such big splashes in the women's football transfer market... about time, right? 🙄 I mean, 21-year-old Ellen Wangerheim from Sweden sounds like just what the doctor ordered - all that Scandinavian coolness and skill! But seriously, it'll be interesting to see how these new signings mesh with the team. Birmingham City is looking pretty strong too, breaking their club record and all... guess that's one way to show ambition 💸. And poor Ella Toone's out for six weeks? Guess she won't be able to add any more sass to the team's social media posts... 🤷‍♀️

Manchester United's got game, and now they've got Wangerheim! 💁‍♀️🔥

Birmingham City's breaking records left and right... maybe it's time to break into the top tier? 😂💪

I'm really excited about this transfer news 🤩! Manchester United's signing of Ellen Wangerheim is a great move, she's clearly got some amazing skills and I can see her fitting right in with Lea Schüller. Meanwhile, Birmingham City breaking their club record on Wilma Leidhammar is impressive, she's definitely someone to watch out for! 😊 It'll be interesting to see how they all gel together, especially with Ella Toone being out of action, but I'm sure Marc Skinner and the team will come back strong 💪. Can't wait for the Women's Champions League playoff against Atlético Madrid, it's going to be a great competition 🏆!

😊 Omg I'm so hyped about these transfers! Manchester United just signed this talented Swedish forward Ellen Wangerheim 🙌 and now they've got her teaming up with Lea Schüller - that's some serious goal-scoring power 🔥. And Birmingham City is all like "we're on the move" 💪 by breaking their record transfer fee for Wilma Leidhammar! The thing I love about these signings is that both clubs are saying they want to make a statement and compete at the highest level 🏆. It's gonna be so exciting to watch them play in the Women's Champions League playoff - fingers crossed for some thrilling matches ⚽️!

I don't get why everyone's fangirling over these Swedish girls 😒. Don't get me wrong, Ellen Wangerheim and Wilma Leidhammar are talented players and all, but it feels like we're just hyping them up for the sake of it 💁‍♀️. Like, what's the real difference between these two ladies? Both have the same stats, play in the same league... can't they just settle on who's the "better" player already? 🤔
