McLaren willing to use team orders to ensure Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri beat Max Verstappen to F1 title, says Zak Brown

McLaren chief Zak Brown has confirmed that his team is willing to implement team orders in this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to ensure a victory for either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri over Max Verstappen and claim the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship.

The situation could become increasingly complicated if Verstappen leads the race, which would make it all but impossible for Piastri to win. However, if Piastri is leading, he can let Norris pass to guarantee a championship victory, given that Norris will secure his maiden drivers' title with a podium finish.

Brown acknowledged that the team's intention was not to protect Norris or Piastri from potential backlash but rather to prioritize winning the championships as a team. He cited instances last season when both McLaren drivers allowed each other through during Sprints races in Brazil and Qatar, demonstrating that this strategy is not unusual in any sport.

In light of these circumstances, Brown made it clear that his team would be willing to make sacrifices for each other if necessary to secure their goal: winning the Drivers' Championship.

just thinking about it, what's the point of having a championship if you're gonna manipulate the outcome? πŸ€” 2 teams can't both win without someone getting screwed over. feels like they're more worried about the title than fair play... 😐 piastri's been struggling to get past verstappen all season, wouldn't be right for mclaren to just bail him out.

So they're gonna do what they did last season and just let each other win? It's almost like they're trying to recreate the good ol' days of Schumacher and Senna at McLaren... πŸ˜… You know, back when it was all about the team first and not just individual egos getting in the way. Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it does make you wonder if they're being too clever for their own good? πŸ€” Either way, I hope Norris or Piastri ends up on top this weekend, would be awesome to see one of them bring home that championship! 🏎️

I'm literally feeling so uplifted right now! I mean, think about it - these drivers are willing to work together as a team to achieve their goal, even if it means making some tough decisions. It's all about putting the team first and supporting each other out. I love that McLaren is being proactive and not just letting events unfold on the track.

It's also a great reminder that in racing (and in life, tbh!), we don't always have to be "winners" or come out on top alone. Sometimes it's about lifting each other up and working together towards a common goal. So many people can learn from this! 🀩πŸ’ͺ

this whole thing just smells like a setup for some drama πŸ€” I feel like McLaren is playing with fire here and might end up losing some fans over this move... it's not about protecting one driver over another, but rather who's gonna take home that championship trophy πŸ’Έ and honestly, if they're willing to manipulate the situation like this, what's next? will they be making team decisions on who gets to use the bathroom at the paddock? 🚽

I'm getting a bad vibe from this... McLaren's willingness to cheat just to win seems so last season πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Allowing Norris and Piastri to sacrifice each other on the track just because it benefits them more as a team? It's not about being a good teammate anymore, it's about being ruthless πŸ’ͺ. Verstappen's chances are already slim, but now he's got an even better reason to win by himself 🚫. I hope Red Bull can keep up with McLaren's dirty tricks... πŸ”΄

omg u can imagine how cringy it looks when F1 teams start making deals like this πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ its not about the drivers, its about the championship title and whoever gets that gets all the glory πŸ† but seriously why did mclaren wait till now to make a move? shouldn't they've thought of this before? now it just looks like they're trying to manipulate the outcome πŸ€” what if piastri does win tho? wouldnt that be amazing for him and his team too?!

idk about this... sounds like they're gonna try to manipulate the outcome just to win πŸ€”. i mean, teams usually don't do that unless it's a guarantee of winning. and even then, is it really worth risking the championship for one driver? but at the same time, can you blame them? this is f1 we're talking about, where every point counts... so yeah, idk, feels like they're playing with fire here πŸ’₯.

this is gonna get messy πŸ€”... like if Piastri's leading and Norris lets him pass, but what if Max Verstappen starts pulling away? 😬 can't see McLaren handling that drama well πŸ‘€

πŸ€” so i gotta say, this is wild stuff... like, the F1 world is already crazy enough without teams trying to game the system like this. but at the same time, you can kinda understand where they're coming from - winning a championship is everything in this sport πŸ†. and if it means putting your teammates first, then i guess that's what it takes sometimes πŸ’―.

but for real though, max verstappen is on fire right now and it's gonna be tough for piastri to catch up no matter what ⏱️. and if mclaren does decide to play favorites, there's bound to be some drama afterwards πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. one thing's for sure tho - this weekend's abu dhabi grand prix is gonna be a wild ride πŸ˜….

I'm really concerned about the implications of McLaren's plan to implement team orders πŸ€”πŸ’Ό. While I get that winning is important and they want to prioritize the championship, it feels like they're putting a price on fair competition? Like, what if Piastri or Norris isn't having a great day and Verstappen takes advantage of that? Does that mean McLaren would still screw over Verstappen for the sake of one of their own drivers? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I think there needs to be some more nuance here. What's fair is what everyone gets a chance to win, even if it means sacrificing a few points or podiums in the process πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ’¨

Yooo, can you even imagine the drama that's gonna go down this weekend?! 🀯 McLaren is basically saying they'll collude with each other to win, which is wild. I get why they'd do it - Lando and Oscar are both in the hunt for that championship and if one of them wins, the other gets a sweet bonus. But at the same time, it's like, aren't they gonna mess up the whole racing thing? πŸ€”

I'm kinda rooting for Max Verstappen to lead the race though - it'd be a much more authentic championship fight if Oscar or Lando had to work their way up from behind. But hey, that's just my two cents. Who knows what goes on in those driver's minds? Maybe they're all secretly besties πŸ€œπŸ€›

One thing for sure is that this strategy would make the sport a lot more predictable, but also kinda boring if you ask me 😴

I'm so down with McLaren's move πŸ˜‚. It's all about who can get the win and lift that championship trophy πŸ†. I don't blame them for wanting it, especially after last season they played nice and let each other through when needed. It's like, if you want to be a team, you gotta put your own interests on the line sometimes 🀝. I think Lando Norris would take it hard if Oscar Piastri is leading and lets him pass though 😳. That podium finish for Norris would be sweet, but at the end of the day, McLaren's goal is to win that championship and not get in each other's way πŸ’ͺ.

I'm a bit worried about where this might lead... I mean, what's next? Teams compromising to get a title over a legitimate win? It's all about strategy and the ultimate goal of winning, but let's not forget that it's racing too! πŸ€”πŸŽοΈ I think it's great that McLaren is putting their drivers first, but at the same time, I don't want to see anyone getting unduly rewarded for just following orders. The drama in F1 can get intense enough already 😬.

OMG u guys 🀯 I cant even believe what's going on with McLaren!! 😲 They're literally gonna do whatever it takes to get that championship win lol, like what team is gonna take a shot at Verstappen and mess with Piastri's chances? Norris needs this so badly tho πŸ’ͺ he's been carrying him all season! but omg the thought of them sacrificing each other if needed is CRAZY 🀯 I hope Piastri can pull off that win tho! 🏎️ he's got this!!! 🀞

omg can u even imagine the drama that's gonna go down this weekend?! i'm literally rooting for both lando and oskar!!! 🀩🏎️ i mean, team orders are never fun but at least mclaren is being real about wanting to win as a team... it's like they're saying "hey guys we got your backs" 😊. u know max verstappen is just gonna be over here driving his heart out and hoping for the best πŸ’ͺ🏎️. can't wait to see how this all plays out!!! πŸ€”πŸ’₯

I'm calling BS on McLaren's plan πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. They're basically saying they want to rig a championship win? That's not how you build credibility as a team or respect your competitors. It sounds like they're just trying to force a result, which would be a total cop-out. And what's with the "we'll make sacrifices for each other" line? Sounds like they're talking out of both sides of their mouth πŸ€”. If they really wanted to prioritize winning, they wouldn't need to resort to shady tactics like this.

Wow 🀯 McLaren is actually considering manipulating the racing order? That's some next level stuff! I mean, I get why they wanna win but come on, it's F1 not a team sport... Interesting πŸ€‘

omg I just had the craziest dream last night 🀯 about racing cars... like seriously, who comes up with this stuff? πŸ’¨ so McLaren is gonna mess with the championship to make sure one of those drivers wins and I'm lowkey rooting for Lando Norris but Oscar Piastri sounds pretty cool too 😎 I wonder what would happen if Verstappen's lead got really big tho... does that mean they wouldn't even try anymore? πŸ€” also, can we talk about how crazy it is to have a championship at stake and teams actually having to decide who gets the best spot? πŸ’Έ like, doesn't that sound super intense? πŸ˜…
