Men’s hockey: Tommies thump Mavs, seize share of CCHA lead

St. Thomas Takes Control of CCHA Lead with Blistering Win Over Minnesota State

The St. Thomas Tommies stormed into a tie for first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) standings after crushing Minnesota State 4-2 at the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena on Saturday night.

The visitors exploded out of the gate, scoring four goals in just over three minutes in the middle frame to take a commanding lead. Lucas Wahlin opened the scoring with a strike just 20 seconds into the second period, before Attila Lippai and Quinton Pepper scored consecutive goals at 6:35 and 6:52. Ryan O'Neill sealed the deal at 7:33, and St. Thomas's offense continued to pour in assists from Alex Gaffney, Bauer Berry, Lucas Van Vliet, Nick Williams, Caige Sterzer, and Mason Poolman in the span of under a minute.

Despite Minnesota State's late goals in the third period, it was too little, too late to spoil UST goaltender Aaron Trotter's bid for a shutout. The freshman netminder made 18 saves on the night as the Tommies took full advantage of their scoring opportunities.

With the win, St. Thomas (12-7-3 overall, 9-3-2 CCHA) earned its 30th point in conference play and moved into a tie with Augustana atop the standings, while Minnesota State dropped to third place with 28 points. The Tommies will look to build on their momentum when they host Bemidji State next Friday and Saturday at the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena, with both games set to begin at 7 p.m.

I don't know about you guys but I think St Thomas's 4 goal burst in the middle frame was crazy 🤯. I mean, it's one thing to score goals, but they just kept coming! It felt like their offense was on another level tonight. Aaron Trotter was solid too, keeping that shutout bid alive with 18 saves. Still gonna be fun to watch these guys compete for the CCHA title - the atmosphere at the arena must've been electric 🎉.

OMG, I'm shocked St Thomas didn't shutout Minnesota State lol 🤣 like, Aaron Trotter is a total boss! 18 saves in a big win? impressive! And can we talk about how long it took the Mavericks to score after the Tommies' insane goal streak? Like, what was going on there? 😂 and btw, I'm loving St Thomas's momentum, they're totally due for a playoff spot 🤞

🚨 Stats Alert! 🚨 St. Thomas is killin' it in CCHA right now! 12-7-3 overall, that's a solid record for a team that's on a roll 😏. They're also tied with Augustana for the lead, which means they're gonna be tough to beat 🤯. Minnesota State is still in the mix though, but they dropped to 3rd place after this loss 💔. Aaron Trotter's got some serious skills as a freshman goalie 👀, making 18 saves and looking like a pro! The Tommies are on fire 🔥, can't wait to see what happens next weekend against Bemidji State 🎟️.

omg i just got a new gaming laptop and its so powerful 🤩 what's ccha tho? is it like ncaa or something? btw did you see that mason poolman guy score 3 goals in one game last week? 🤦‍♂️

OMG u guys!! 🤯 St Thomas is on FIRE!!! 💥 I mean, four goals in like two minutes? that's insane! 😲 their offense is SOOO good right now and Aaron Trotter is looking like a total rockstar goalie 🤩 18 saves on the night? not bad for a freshman, lol. and to think they were tied with Augie at one point... talk about turning it up a notch 💪 anyway can't wait to see what these next two games bring! Bemidji State is gonna get smashed too 🤣

I'm not buying this "Blistering Win" hype 🙄. 4 goals in under 3 minutes? That's either superhuman scoring or way too many penalties called 😒. Either way, it feels like Minnesota State got taken advantage of by St Thomas's offense. Aaron Trotter makes 18 saves and gets a shutout? That's impressive, but still... how did he not see those goals coming? 🤔 And Augustana is just tied for first place now? Come on, can't they even maintain their own lead without someone else messing it up? 😒

omg u guys st thomas is on fire!!! 🚀 they're killing it in ccha standings and i'm all for them taking control of that lead! aaron trotter's shutout bid was amazing 💪 and the fact that they were able to capitalize on so many scoring opportunities is just impressive. plus, it's awesome to see st thomas moving into a tie with augustana at the top 🤝 now let's keep the momentum going for their upcoming games against bemidji state! fingers crossed for a clean sweep 💫

lol what's up with the CCHA standings 🤦‍♂️, Augustana is not even close to St Thomas in points... they're like 10 points ahead 📊, and Minnesota State is already dropped to third place? That game was pretty insane tho, those 4 goals in under 3 minutes is like a record or something 🏆. And Aaron Trotter's shutout attempt is impressive, dude made some crazy saves 😱. St Thomas's offense is fire 🔥, they're gonna have a tough time playing Bemidji State next weekend tho...

Man I'm still trying to process this CCHA win for St Thomas 🤯... It's like, they came out so strong and dominated that Minnesota State just couldn't catch a break 💔. But what really gets me thinking is how fast-paced the game was, with those four goals in like 3 minutes ⏱️. It highlights how important it is to be able to capitalize on scoring chances quickly, both for yourself and your team.

And I love how St Thomas's goalie Aaron Trotter was able to shut down Minnesota State's offense, making some huge saves along the way 🙌. That's what separates the good teams from the great ones, you know? The ability to adapt and respond under pressure. Plus, with this win, they're showing everyone that they're a force to be reckoned with in the CCHA...

So St Thomas is killin it right now! They're like a well-oiled machine out there on the ice, scorin' goals left and right. I mean, four goals in three minutes is just ridiculous! 🤯 And their goaltender Aaron Trotter is lookin' sharp too, shuttin' down Minnesota State's chances.

The thing that impresses me most about St Thomas is their depth and chemistry on offense. They've got a bunch of guys who are clickin' together perfectly, like Lucas Wahlin and Attila Lippai are like two peas in a pod when it comes to scorin'. And they're not just relyin' on one or two players, the whole team is gettin' in on the goal-scoring action.

Now, I know Minnesota State gave 'em a run for their money, but in the end, St Thomas's offense was just too much to handle. They took advantage of every scoring opportunity and capitalized on their chances. And with their 30th point in conference play, they're solidly in first place now.

It'll be interesting to see how they perform against Bemidji State next weekend. Can they keep up this level of play? We'll just have to wait and see! 🤔

🏒️ this team is so underrated rn, people think they're just a small school from MN but they're killing it in the CCHA 🤯 St. Thomas is for real 💪 Aaron Trotter is on fire 😎 and their offense is straight fire 🔥 4 goals in under a minute? that's crazy! 🤯

omg 1-2 weeks ago this team was like the underdog of the CCHA standings but now they're a force to be reckoned with 🤯 i need to see more games from them though, not just one win against minny state. also, aaron trotter's shutout bid was awesome but he's only got 10 GP so far... what's his record look like overall? 🤔

Wow 😮 St. Thomas is on FIRE right now! Their offense is UNSTOPPABLE 💥! Aaron Trotter's shutout bid was almost a guarantee after that blistering middle frame 🤯. Can't wait to see what they do against Bemidji State next weekend 🏒️ Interesting

omg I'm so hyped for St Thomas Tommies!!! 💥 They're killing it in the CCHA standings! 😅 That 4-goal streak in the middle frame was insane 🤯! Aaron Trotter's shutout bid is giving me LIFE 💖 And now they're tied for first place with Augustana? 🤩 The momentum is building, can't wait to see them take on Bemidji State next wkend! 🎉

I'm loving the way St. Thomas is playing right now! 🤩 They're absolutely dominating in the CCHA and it's amazing to see their offense clicking on all cylinders. I mean, four goals in three minutes in the middle frame? That's just ridiculous! 😱 Their depth and skill are really paying off, with players like Lucas Wahlin, Attila Lippai, and Quinton Pepper scoring crucial goals. And let's not forget about Aaron Trotter in goal - he's making some amazing saves left and right. 🙌 The way the team is communicating on the ice is also top-notch, which is a big reason why they're able to take advantage of their scoring opportunities.

Now that they've taken control of first place, I'm expecting them to really go for it in their next two games against Bemidji State. They need to keep building momentum and staying consistent if they want to make a push for the conference title. With Augustana tied for first, every point counts! 💪

OMG u guys! I'm tellin ya, St Thomas is lookin like a legit contender for the CCHA title right now 🤯 They're killin it on offense and defense, and that Aaron Trotter kid is on fire 🚀 He's got skills for days! And can we talk about the team's chemistry? It feels like they all click and work together seamlessly 💪 I'm lovin this win over Minnesota State, they needed that to boost their confidence. Now they're lookin at Augustana and sayin "hey, we're here to take you down" 😏 Bring it on! 🎉

You know what's wild? I was just thinking about how much I love trying out new coffee shops near campus 🤯. Like, have you guys tried that new cafe downtown? It's got an insane selection of cold brews and the atmosphere is so cozy 😎. I swear, it's like a mini-vacation from all the studying I've been doing lately 📚. Oh, and did I mention they have the best s'mores in town? Game. Changer.

OMG, I'm freaking out about St Thomas's win over Minnesota State! 🤯 They totally dominated the game and now they're tied for first place in the CCHA standings with Augustana! 😲 The way their offense exploded in the middle frame was insane - four goals in like 3 minutes is unheard of! 💥 Aaron Trotter's shutout bid was looking good until Minnesota State scored those late goals, but still, it was an epic performance by UST. 🙌 Now they need to keep that momentum going against Bemidji State next weekend and I'm predicting a sweep for the Tommies! 🎉

I'm so done with St Thomas's dominating performance, it's like they're trying to rub it in everyone's face. I mean, who needs a thrilling comeback or a close game when you can just blow out your opponents like that? It's not like Minnesota State even got a chance to show off their skills 🙄. And don't even get me started on the goalie situation - 18 saves for an assistant goalie? That's not impressive at all... Aaron Trotter needs to step up his game if St Thomas wants to keep winning convincingly 💪.
