Meta is temporarily pulling teens' access from its AI chatbot characters

Meta is Shutting Down Teen Access to Its Chatty AI Characters for Now

In a move aimed at addressing concerns over the safety and maturity of its AI chatbots, Meta has announced it's temporarily removing teens from the picture. The tech giant will no longer allow young users to interact with its character-based AI chatbots globally, citing "updated experience" that includes new parental controls.

This decision comes months after reports surfaced of some of Meta's chatbot characters engaging in alarming conversations with teenagers. An internal policy document reportedly revealed that the chatbots were allowed to have "sensual" conversations with underage users, a statement Meta later disavowed as "erroneous and inconsistent with our policies."

To rectify this, Meta has been re-training its character chatbots to include "guardrails" that will prevent teens from discussing sensitive topics such as self-harm, eating disorders, or suicidal ideation. While these updates are still in the works, the company is now pausing teen access to its existing AI characters until they're ready.

The new restrictions, set to roll out within weeks, will apply not only to teenagers but also to individuals who claim to be adults but are suspected of being teens based on Meta's age prediction technology. On the other hand, users with official Meta accounts can still interact with its AI chatbot, which already boasts "age-appropriate protections in place."

Meta's move has been prompted by growing concerns over the safety risks posed by companion chatbots to young people. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Texas attorney general have both launched investigations into the company, while a lawsuit brought by New Mexico's attorney general is set to go to trial next month.

In light of these developments, Meta has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the well-being of its users, particularly minors. While some updates remain pending, it's clear that the tech giant is taking significant steps towards safeguarding its chatbots from potentially harming young users.

Wow! 🤯 I'm so glad Meta is taking this seriously and making changes to protect their younger users. It's crazy how easily these AI characters can have conversations with teens, it's like they're almost human! 💻 The new guardrails should really help prevent any more incidents. But what about the existing AI characters that are still available to users? Are they going to be re-trained too? 🤔

omg i'm literally thinking about this right now lol my friends and i were just chatting with these AI characters on Meta's website and it was kinda weird how mature they seemed idk if u guys have noticed but i feel like we're being watched or something anyway yeah its cool that they're updating their chatbots to include more "guardrails" for teens like what if our conversations are gonna get flagged or something still can't wait to try out the new features tho

omg i no wut meta's doin 😂💔 they cant even trust ther own kids to be around ther AI chatty bots 🤖😳 so theyre just pausin teens 4 now lol dont wanna mess w/ ther minds or somethin 🤪 but for real tho, its kinda scary how these chatbots r interactin w/ teens already 🤔 u no? like whats next wen they get out of ther lab and into the wild 🌐

I'm kinda glad they're cracking down on this, gotta protect our youngins from getting too caught up in these AI chats 💻😕 I mean, think about it, a "sensual" convo with a 13-yr-old? No way 🤯. Meta's got to make sure their chatbots are safe and responsible, especially when it comes to sensitive topics like that. And good on them for taking steps to prevent any more incidents like what happened months ago 🙏. Still, I'm curious about how these "guardrails" are gonna work - hope they're not just a bunch of automated checks 🤔.

I think this decision by Meta is a step in the right direction 🤔. It's great to see them prioritizing the safety and well-being of their teenage users, who are often vulnerable to online exploitation and harassment. The introduction of new "guardrails" that prevent teens from discussing sensitive topics is a much-needed measure to protect young minds. I also appreciate that they're expanding these restrictions to suspected minors who claim to be adults, which can help prevent potential grooming or manipulation. It's not perfect, but it's a step towards creating a safer online environment for all users 🚀💻
