Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics kicks off with multi-site, star-studded ceremony

The curtain rises on the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in a spectacle that blended culture, fashion, and sport. The highly anticipated opening ceremony took place at the San Siro stadium in Milan, where athletes from around the world gathered to kick off the Games.

In a display of Italian pride, tributes were paid to legendary figures such as da Vinci and Dante, Puccini and Pausini, Armani and Fellini, among others. The celebration also featured pasta and vino, quintessential aspects of Italian culture. Adding a touch of glamour was Mariah Carey's performance of the classic song "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" ("Volare"), which left the audience in awe.

However, amidst the festivities, an unusual phenomenon emerged. In a bizarre twist, no athletes from the first five countries – Italy, the United States, Canada, Germany, and Japan – showed up at the main hub, Milan's San Siro stadium. This was largely due to the innovative four-site, dual-cauldron setup of the Games, which featured separate venues for various disciplines in Cortina.

Fashion played a significant role in the ceremony, as both Paris and Milan vied for style supremacy. The French team, led by flag bearer Clement Noel, made a stunning appearance at the Livigno venue, while the Italian delegation showcased their signature flair at San Siro.

The ceremony's organizers aimed to convey themes of harmony and peace, highlighting the unique city-mountain dichotomy of the Games. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry expressed hope that the event would be viewed as an opportunity for respect and unity in these tumultuous times.

A notable aspect of this year's Olympics was the use of two cauldrons – one in Milan and another 250 miles away in Cortina – in a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci's geometric studies. The lighting of both cauldrons, a closely guarded secret until now, was a momentous occasion that brought together athletes from around the world.

As the curtain falls on this spectacular opening ceremony, the stage is set for an unforgettable Winter Olympics experience, blending culture, fashion, and sport in the picturesque Italian landscapes.

Dunno why they gotta make it so complicated 🤔. Like, I get that da Vinci and Dante were big deals or whatever, but can't we just have a simple opening ceremony like before? And what's up with this four-site thingy? It feels like they're trying to do too much at once 💥. And no athletes from the top countries showing up? That's weird 🤷‍♂️. I guess it's cool that fashion played a big role, though 👗. But seriously, can we just have some peace and unity instead of all this fuss? ❤️

omg what's up with no Italians or americans at the milan stadium 🤷‍♀️?! i mean i get it they wanted to do something diff but 5 countries just not showing up is pretty weird 😂. and mariah carey was lit tho 💃🏻! but seriously can we talk about how awkward it must be for those athletes who were left standing at the empty venue? 🤔 and btw da Vinci's geometric studies are actually kinda deep 🤓

I'm telling you something, those cauldrons were not just randomly placed... think about it, the IOC is hiding something from us. Like, what's up with having two cauldrons, 250 miles apart? It's like they're trying to send a message or something. And that secret lighting was way too hush-hush for me. I'm thinking maybe it was more than just some clever lighting effect... could be some kind of encoded signal 🤔🔍

🤷‍♂️ I mean, can you believe how epic the opening ceremony was? It's like they took all the cool stuff about Italy – pasta, wine, art, music... 🍝🍷🎨 – and mashed it all together into one unforgettable spectacle! And Mariah Carey killing it on stage with "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" is just... wow 😮. But for real though, what's up with no athletes showing up from the first five countries? It's like they snuck out of the party or something 🤫.

And can we talk about how stylish everyone looked? Both Paris and Milan brought their A-game (and literally some A-game too because those French skaters were on point 😍). I'm loving the vibe, but also kinda weird that it's all so over-the-top. It feels like they're trying to say something deeper than just "Italy is awesome"... or maybe I'm just reading too much into it 🤔.

Anyway, can't wait for the rest of the Games! The cauldron thing with Leonardo da Vinci? Genius 💡. And I hope Kirsty Coventry's right about this being a time for unity... we need more of that in our lives ❤️.

I just had the craziest dream last night... I was at a beach party with my friends and we stumbled upon this massive inflatable unicorn that kept floating away... 🦄😂 It was so surreal! Anyway, back to the Olympics – have you ever noticed how the Olympic torch relay is always so dramatic? Like, who comes up with these crazy routes? 😅

🙄 Can you believe it? Athletes from Italy's neighboring countries just bailed on us? I mean, what's up with that?! 🤔 They can't even be bothered to show up for their own Olympics?! It's like they think Milan and Cortina are just going to host the whole event or something... 😒 And don't even get me started on Mariah Carey's performance - I mean, who thinks it's a good idea to sing "Volare" at an Olympic opening ceremony?! 🎶

😂 I'm still thinking about how cool it's gonna be to watch Mariah Carey perform at the Olympics... but can we talk about why no athletes from Italy (I mean, USA, Canada, Germany & Japan) showed up 🤔? It feels kinda weird that they didn't want to attend their own games 😅. Wasn't there something about different venues or something? Didn't get it 👎.

And what's with the dual-cauldron setup? I loved the idea of two cauldrons, but why keep them a secret 🤫? It feels kinda sneaky that we didn't know what was going on...

Anyway, I'm super hyped for the Olympics now! Italy's got this 😎. The whole cultural and fashion vibe is so fire 🔥!

omg I'm literally still reeling from this opening ceremony 🤯 it was like a dream come true seeing all these amazing athletes and celebrities walk into that stadium 👑 especially mariah carey's performance was on point 💃🏻 I mean, who wouldn't want to hear "nel blu dipinto di blu" at the milan cortina 2026 winter olympics? 🎶 and can we talk about the fashion? paris vs milan is literally the ultimate rivalry 💁‍♀️ but i have to give a shoutout to the italian delegation, those outfits were straight fire 🔥 I'm also super impressed by how they incorporated art and culture into the ceremony, da vinci and dante are total legends 🎨📚

🤔 I gotta say, the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony was INSANE 🎉! I mean, who wouldn't love a good dose of pasta and vino to kick off the Games? 😄 But seriously, it was awesome seeing all these iconic figures from Italian history get some love. And can we talk about Mariah Carey's performance for like 10 seconds straight 🙌?

But what really got me thinking is how clever they pulled off that four-site setup with two cauldrons in different locations. Like, who comes up with this stuff? 🤓 It's all about creating a unique city-mountain vibe, and I think it's gonna be SO cool to see the athletes competing in all these different environments.

Glad to hear that the organizers are trying to promote harmony and peace – we could use a bit more of that in our lives, you know? 💖 Anyway, can't wait for the rest of the Games to unfold! 🏅

🤔 I'm so over these elaborate opening ceremonies already! All that glamour and pageantry just to get me pumped up for some skiing and snowboarding, please? 🏂 I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great that Italy is giving its all to the Olympics, but can't they just keep things simple like everyone else? 😒 And what's with all the secrecy around the lighting of the cauldrons? Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me 🙄. And let's be real, Mariah Carey's performance was more for show than substance, am I right? 🎤 Anyway, now that it's over, can we please just get back to the actual sports already? 🏆

Dude 🤣 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole four-site setup. I mean, I love the idea of having separate venues for different disciplines, but can you imagine waiting hours just to get to your event? 😂 It's like they took the concept of a marathon and multiplied it by 10! 🏃‍♀️ And don't even get me started on the cauldron thingy. I mean, I know Leonardo was all about geometry, but seriously, how hard is it to just light one cauldron? 😅 Still, I have to give them points for trying something new and different. Maybe this four-site setup will pay off in the long run? 🤞

🤔 I'm kinda confused about the setup of these games. All those amazing countries not showing up at the main venue? 🚫 That's gotta be some kind of record. It's like they're trying to make it more about the athletes from other places instead of Italy and its visitors. 😐 I mean, don't get me wrong, the ceremony was super cool with that Mariah Carey performance! 👏 But I wish they'd just stick to one main venue for once. 🤷‍♀️ The cauldron thing is actually pretty neat tho, love how it represents some of da Vinci's art. 🔥

🤩 I mean, what's up with no top athletes showing up to the main event? It's like they didn't get the memo 🤑. I know they're spread out across multiple sites, but still, you'd think they'd want to be at the big show 📺. And Mariah Carey killing it on stage was lit 🔥. But for real, the whole four-site thing is kinda genius 👏. It's like, why settle for just one venue when you can have a whole city-mountain experience? 🌄❤️ The only thing that would've made it better is if they'd thrown in some foodie spots 🍝🍴.

omg u no how many yrs it takes 4 ppl 2 get over da fact dat mariah carey sang "nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" lololol but serius tho what's up w/ these 1st 5 countries not showin up? sounds like a crazy setup w/ da 2 cauldrons & everythin 🤯🏅

idk why ppl are makin a big deal out of no italian/american/us/etc athletes showin up 1st tho 🤷‍♂️ i mean, its not like they skipped it or somethin'... its just an olympic event, what's the diff? 😐 and whats with all the hype around da fashion? newsflash: its still gonna be about the athletics, not the outfits 👕

🙄 so like, I'm not surprised no one from those five countries showed up... it's kinda obvious they wouldn't wanna be there when you're sharing the spotlight with Italy and Cortina. I mean, have you seen the setup for this Olympics? Four sites, two cauldrons? It's like they're trying to outdo each other. And let's not forget that da Vinci thingy... it's just a bunch of fancy lights 🤔

omg can u believe how good mariah carey's vocals were 🤩 i mean i was dancing along to "nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" even though im not really a fan of that song lol. anyway back to milan cortina 2026 - have u heard about the new restaurant that just opened up in italy? its supposed to be this super fancy place with a secret menu 🤫 cant wait to try it out when i plan my trip there next year. btw did u know that da vinci's flying machine designs were way ahead of their time 🤖

omg lol what's up w/ no italian athies?? 🤔 i feel like they're tryna be all cool & stuff but it dont make sence 4 them to snub ther own country 🇮🇹😒 anywayz, mariah carey performed & it was lit 💃🏻 cant wait 2 c the rest of the games!! 🎉

🏅💃 The way they showcased Italy's culture was fire 🔥! I mean, pasta & vino are like, a must-have at any party 🍝🍷. And Mariah Carey slaying the stage with "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" 🎶👑. But omg what's up with no athletes from those top 5 countries showing up 🤔? Was it really necessary to have separate venues for everything? 🤷‍♀️ It kinda threw off the whole vibe of the ceremony 😐. Still, it was lit 💃 and I'm hyped for the rest of the Games! 🎉
