Nature boys and girls – here's your chance to get published in the Guardian

Young Country Diary Series Seeks Child Writers' Nature Encounters

The Guardian's Young Country Diary series is now open for submissions, inviting children aged 8-14 to share their recent encounters with nature in an article. The deadline for winter submissions is February 2nd at noon, and the winning entries will be published in print and online.

The series aims to inspire children to explore and appreciate nature, regardless of their background or experience level. Teachers are encouraged to participate, as the child writer's piece will be paid. Four articles will be selected for publication each month, with a focus on winter and spring submissions.

To take part, parents or guardians must give permission, while the child should follow these steps:

1. Spend a day observing nature in their local environment.
2. Write an article of 200-250 words describing what they saw and experienced.
3. Submit the article via the provided form, which must be filled out by the parent or guardian.

Tips for budding writers include focusing on the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch), drawing inspiration from observations and research, and reflecting on how their experience made them think about nature.

The deadline for entry is 10pm on November 2nd. All entries must come from children aged between 8-14 based in the UK. A selection of recent winners will be featured, showcasing exciting stories such as finding a fairytale fungus or encountering a rare bird species.

🌳 I think it's so cool that The Guardian is doing this! They're literally giving kids the chance to share their love for nature with the whole world 🌟. I remember when I was in school, we did some similar projects and it was amazing to see how much creativity and knowledge those young minds brought to the table 📚. I think it's awesome that they're paying teachers to participate too, it shows they value their input and want to give them a chance to inspire their students even more 🤝. What's weird is why only UK kids are allowed to enter though? Can't we have a global version of this series? 🌎

I'm thinking we need to encourage more kids to get outside and explore nature... 🌳 It's so cool that The Guardian is doing this initiative - who wouldn't want to share their favorite outdoor experiences with the world? 🤗 The tips for budding writers are on point, too - using our senses can really help bring a story to life! And it's awesome that teachers get paid to participate - schools should be all about fostering a love of nature in young minds. I'm curious to see what kind of amazing stories we'll see come out of this... 💡

🌿 I think this series is a great idea! It's awesome that The Guardian is giving kids a platform to share their nature encounters and inspire others to get outside and explore. I'm sure it'll be amazing to read about the different experiences of children from all over the UK. What's cool is that teachers can participate too, which means even more parents will be encouraged to let their kiddos write about nature 📚. The tips for budding writers are super helpful, by the way - focusing on senses and reflections will definitely make the writing more engaging and personal. I'm sure we'll see some fantastic stories come out of this!

I remember doing my own nature diary back in school... 🌿😊 It's so cool that they're starting this series again for kids. I think it's awesome that they want to encourage more kids to get out there and explore the great outdoors. I mean, what's better than spending time in nature? 🏞️ My own kids are always asking me to take them on adventures like hiking or camping, but sometimes I'm like, "just sit down and watch a bird for 10 minutes, kiddo... it's magic!" 😂 The idea that they're gonna pay the teacher for participating is also super great. It'll definitely motivate some of those young writers to get creative! 📝

🤯 this is so cool! i'm like 10 and i love spending time outdoors, but never thought about writing it down as an article 📝 the thing that bugs me is that we need to get permission from our parents lol its kinda lame that they gotta do it for us. can't we just write it ourselves? 🤷‍♀️

I just got back from the most amazing hike with my pup 🐶🏞️ and I started thinking about how nature is like a treasure hunt – you never know what you're gonna find! Like, we saw this gorgeous owl perched in a tree and it was just chillin', looking all wise and stuff. Anyway, I was reading about this fungus that's supposed to grow in these parts and I'm pretty sure I saw something similar... but anyway, back to the diary thing – I think it's awesome that they're encouraging kids to get out there and explore! My little cousin loves drawing pictures of animals and plants, maybe she'll be a nature writer one day 🎨🌿

I'm so down for this, it's like super cool that The Guardian is giving kids a chance to share their love for nature 🌿📝. I think it's awesome that they're encouraging young writers to get creative and explore the outdoors - it's like, exactly what our planet needs more of, you know? 🌟 And yeah, paying teachers who submit articles is like, totally a nice touch, makes me wanna get involved too! 👍 My only thought is that maybe they should extend the deadline for submissions, 'cause I feel like some kids might get it in at the last minute and be all stressed out 😬. Still, it's a great opportunity for kids to express themselves and share their passion for nature with others 🌸💚

OMG, I just saw the cutest video of a puppy playing with leaves on YouTube 🐶🌿 and it made me think about how much I love exploring nature too! I used to spend hours in the woods behind my house as a kid, collecting sticks and watching the squirrels. It's so important for kids (and adults alike) to get outside and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. And omg, finding a fairytale fungus sounds like the most epic adventure ever! 🌳🔍 I'm totally going to sign up my niece for this contest - she's 10 and loves reading about animals. Do you think it's weird that they're only accepting submissions from kids in the UK?

OMG 🤩 I'm so down for this! I think it's amazing that The Guardian is giving kids a platform to share their love for nature 🌳💚. It's like, we need more young voices telling us about the importance of taking care of our planet 🌎. And get this - they're paying teachers to submit articles too?! 🙌 That's like, the ultimate encouragement for kids to write from the heart. I've got a few ideas myself for winter submissions... anyone else thinking of giving it a go?

omg I think this is such a awesome idea 🤩 especially for kids who are super into nature like me! I love how they're encouraging teachers to participate too, 'cause that's just the best way to get more kids involved. and the fact that they're gonna pay them for their work is just genius 💡 I wish my little sis was old enough to enter this contest, she's always playing outside and getting dirty. has anyone ever tried writing an article about a funny thing that happened while you were out in nature? that would be so entertaining 😂

Ugh, I'm so done with this whole 'get kids to appreciate nature' vibe 🙄... Like, can't we just let them play Fortnite already? 🤣 But seriously, why do they have to make it so complicated for the little ones? "Follow these steps" and "pay their parents"... Who comes up with this stuff?! 😩 It's just another thing on their already packed schedule. And what's with the deadlines? 10pm on November 2nd? Are they trying to stress out the kids even more?! 🕰️

omg u guys! i think its so cool that kids get to share their nature encounters with the world 🌿📚 they should 100% apply for this! it would be amazing to see what all the kids in the UK come up with 🤔 and i love that teachers can participate too, cant wait to read about all these awesome adventures 😄

I love this! I think it's super cool that they're encouraging kids to get out into nature and write about their experiences. It's like, we need more people who care about the planet, you know? 🌿📚 I've got a cousin who's always been into nature, she loves hiking and all that, but I'm sure there are plenty of other kids out there who just want to spend some time outside and get their hands dirty. Anyway, I think it's great that the parents have to sign off on everything, so you know the articles are genuine. And, omg, the prize for writing a piece is pretty sweet too - what if some kid discovers a new species or something? 🌸

I'm loving this initiative 🌿📝! It's so great that The Guardian is encouraging kids to get outside and appreciate nature. I remember when I was a kid, my grandparents would take me on these amazing walks in the woods and we'd spend hours just observing the trees, birds, and bugs. It really broadened my horizons and taught me to slow down and appreciate the little things.

I think it's fantastic that they're offering payment to teachers who want to participate too! 🤗 That way, even if your child isn't super into writing, you can still get involved in the process and make some extra cash. And who knows, you might just discover a new talent 😊. Just make sure to get those entries in on time, or they'll be stuck in the winter submissions pile for months! ⏰

Ugh, great, another scheme to get kids to spend more time outside...like they're gonna actually listen 😒. I mean, what's the real point of this? Just to make parents feel good about their kid's "nature experience" and then just throw it online for anyone to see. And what about all the kids who can't even afford a decent camera or won't have an adult to babysit them while they're out there? It's like, great initiative, but also super exclusive 🤷‍♀️.

omg i'm so down for this! 🤩 as someone who's all about layout and structure, i think it's awesome that they're making writing fun and accessible for kids. the idea of encouraging them to explore nature and share their experiences is just perfect. and yeah, let's be real, who doesn't love a good fungi find or rare bird spotting adventure? 🌿🐦 but seriously, this is such a great way to get kids excited about writing and learning. i'm definitely going to start sharing this with my friends' kiddos. also, can we talk about how cute the submission form is? 😊

I gotta say, this Young Country Diary series sounds like a great way to get kids outside and appreciating nature! 🌳👍 I mean, who doesn't love writing about the things they love? And it's awesome that teachers can participate too - it's a perfect opportunity for them to inspire their students.

I think what really sets this apart is that it focuses on child writers' experiences, rather than just adult perspectives. That way, kids get to share their own stories and ideas, without anyone else trying to tell 'em what to write about. Just make sure to follow the tips, or your article might not be published! 😅 And don't worry if you're not a great writer - that's not what this is about, it's about sharing what you saw and experienced in nature.

Also, I love that they're giving out prizes for winning articles! 🏆 That should definitely encourage some young writers to submit their work.

Ugh, I'm so over this series 🙄. Can't they think outside the box? Like, what about kids who live in cities and don't have access to nature or have allergies that make it super hard for them to spend time outdoors? And why do they have to get a teacher's permission? That just seems like an extra hoop for parents to jump through. I mean, can't they just let the kids write their own submissions without all the red tape? 🤷‍♀️
