Nine scientific breakthroughs I'd like to see in 2026 – from earworms to procrastination | Emma Beddington

Scientists' Quest for Breakthroughs in 2026: What We Hope to Discover

As we step into a new year, many of us are still grappling with the consequences of the past, from financial woes to global uncertainty. However, amidst the challenges, there's one constant source of hope – science. The field has consistently amazed us with its potential to transform our lives and address some of humanity's most pressing issues.

In 2025, we witnessed remarkable scientific discoveries that left many of us in awe. Scientists at UC Berkeley created a new color called "olo," which is a blend of sorts of teal. Doctors successfully treated a baby with a rare genetic disorder using custom gene editing techniques. The Smithsonian's list of last year's fascinating scientific discoveries was filled with intriguing findings, including the existence of stealth flippers on extinct marine reptiles and the remarkable ability of snails to regrow their eyes within a month.

These breakthroughs have reinforced our faith in science's capacity to surprise us and inspire us. As we look forward to 2026, it's exciting to consider what other groundbreaking discoveries might be on the horizon. Here are nine scientific breakthroughs that I'd love to see in the coming year:

Firstly, let's explore a seemingly simple yet fundamental question: is sitting down really bad for us? A fresh examination of this topic could have significant implications for our understanding of physical activity and its effects on our well-being.

Next, who wouldn't want to discover a new, cute, fluffy mammal that could brighten up our lives? Perhaps researchers might uncover such an animal in the coming year.

In addition to exploring new species, advancements in live translation software could have a profound impact. Imagine being able to know for certain whether your furry companion truly loves you – or if they're just humoring you!

As we all struggle with earworms, I hope scientists will focus on developing effective remedies to banish these annoying tunes from our minds.

The world is increasingly reliant on renewable energy sources, and it's time to explore new possibilities. Scrolling could be the next big thing – can we harness the power of our fingers to generate electricity?

Furthermore, research into short bursts of exercise has shown promising results, and I'd love to see further investigation into their potential benefits.

In the realm of physics, understanding what happens when we run on a treadmill is crucial. How do digital displays reconcile with our subjective experience of time? It's high time for some answers!

Wearable technology has come a long way, but it's essential that future innovations address bedtime procrastination head-on. Who wouldn't want a device that could gently nudge them towards bed at the right moment?

Finally, let's not forget about geese – those majestic birds are often at odds with us, and we need to unravel their mysterious behavior.

As scientists continue to push the boundaries of human knowledge, I have every confidence that 2026 will be a year filled with groundbreaking discoveries. Who knows what wonders await us?

I'm so down for seeing more research on earworms 😂 those things drive me crazy! But seriously, harnessing scrolling power to generate electricity is kinda cool 🤔 who knows what kind of tech we'll get out of that?

I'd love to see some breakthroughs in wearable tech though - like you said, bedtime procrastination is real 😴 and a device that can help us with that would be amazing.

And can we please have more research on the importance of snail eye regrowth? I mean, who wouldn't want to know how to grow back their eyeballs? 🐌😂

I'm so over this obsession with 'new' discoveries 🙄. Like, who needs a new mammal when we've got cute cat videos already? 🐈 Can't we just explore some weird stuff about the Earth instead of searching for something fluffy to make our lives more interesting?

And honestly, earworms are the worst 😩, but is it really that hard to find a cure? Scientists can totally figure this out with some decent research and not have to rely on fancy 'magic' solutions 💫. And those scrolling-powered electricity devices? Come on, we're not going to run on our fingers like hamsters on wheels just yet 🚫.

I'm all for innovation in wearable tech but a device that nudges us to bed at the right moment is like, so basic 😴. Can't it do something more interesting than that? Like track our sleep patterns or something actually useful?

Geese are okay, I guess 🦆, but who needs scientific breakthroughs about them? The mysteries of geese have been puzzling humans for centuries, let's just leave it alone 👀.

Anyway, I'm still waiting to see some real groundbreaking discoveries 🤔. Not just fluffy mammals or earworm cures 🎶. Let's get something that actually changes the world 🔥.

I'm really curious about scientists investigating if sitting down for long periods is actually bad for our health 🤔💼. Like, is it really as bad as we've been told, or can we just chill (pun intended) without worrying about our waistlines? Maybe they could uncover some new info on how to make us sit comfortably without feeling like we're going to turn into the couch potato version of ourselves 😴👀

I also think it's super cool that researchers are working on live translation software for pets 🐾💬. Imagine being able to know for sure if your furry friend loves you or not! That'd be a game-changer, right? 🤗 It could really change the way we interact with our pets and build stronger bonds with them 💕.

And, can we PLEASE get some help on getting rid of those annoying earworms 🎵😩?! I'm so over being stuck with "Who Let the Dogs Out" stuck in my head for days on end. Maybe scientists could find a way to make them disappear like magic ✨!

🤔 Scientists should really get on this whole 'figuring out why sitting is bad for you' ASAP lol idk how much harm we'd cause just chillin on the couch all day tho 🛋️ maybe they could also create a machine that converts our keyboard clacking into electricity 💻 that'd be lit 🔥

I'm low-key hoping scientists figure out how to make those self-healing concrete tiles a reality 🤔💡 they're like something straight outta Star Trek! It'd be sick to have roads and buildings that just fix themselves, no more potholes or cracks. That would be a game-changer for our infrastructure and the environment 👍

I'm hyped for this coming year lol 🤩💡 it's amazing how science can turn even the smallest topics into super cool breakthroughs! sitting down really bad for us is such an intriguing question - I mean, who doesn't love a good Netflix binge every now and then? 😂 but seriously, if scientists can shed some light on that, it could have major implications for our fitness goals.

and omg, a cute fluffy mammal sounds like the ultimate discovery 🐻💕 i'd be all over that. live translation software is also super cool - imagine being able to know exactly what your pet is thinking! 🤔

earworms are the WORST 😩 so I'm hoping for some serious soundwave research on how to banish those annoying tunes from our minds.

renewable energy sources are a big deal, and i think scrolling as a source of electricity could be a game changer 💻 it's like, imagine being able to charge your phone just by using your fingers - that would be life-changing!

short bursts of exercise have been really interesting to me too - maybe 2026 will see more research on how those work? 🏋️‍♀️ and wearable tech is getting better all the time, so bedtime procrastination remedies are definitely something scientists should focus on.

lastly, geese are just the best 🐥 i mean, have you ever watched a goose waddle? it's like they're having the best time ever. anyway, if scientists can figure out what makes them tick...

I think its kinda cool that were still curious about things like how sitting down affects our health 🤔 - I mean, who doesn't love a good excuse to take a nap? But seriously, it makes you realize that even the smallest changes in our daily habits can have big impacts on our overall well-being. Its also super interesting that scientists are looking into ways to create more meaningful connections with our pets - like, do they really know we're their owners or not 🐶💕?

🤔💡 2026 is gonna be lit 🌟! We're hopin' for some major sci breakthroughs 🚀💻 like how to get rid of them annoying earworms 🎵 or a device that says "chill, human" 😴. Also, harnessing electricity from our fingers 💻 sounds like magic 🔮 but who knows maybe it'll be a thing? 🤷‍♀️ and those cute fluffy mammals are still on my mind 🐹🌿 can't wait to see what the future holds! 👀

idk why they're so hyped about discovering new species all the time lol 🤷‍♂️ like who wouldn't want to see a cute fluffy mammal tho? 😊 but i do think it's cool that scientists are looking into things like earworms and bedtime procrastination 🎵🛋️ those could have some pretty big impacts on our daily lives. also can we pls get some answers on how digital displays work with time? like is it just me who feels like time always flies when i'm having fun 😅 anyway, i guess 2026 will be a cool year for science 🚀

OMG, can you even believe those scientists are working on banishing earworms 🎵😩?! Like, who hasn't been there, right? It's like they're reading our minds! But seriously, I'm so down for a breakthrough in that department. And can we talk about the potential of harnessing scrolling power 💻🔋? That would be EVERYTHING! On a more serious note, it's crazy to think about how much we still don't know about geese 🦆... like, what's up with their weird mating habits?! Anyway, I'm hyped for whatever 2026 brings!

I'm still trying to figure out why my cat's favorite toy is just a piece of cloth lol 🤣 anyway back to science stuff... did you know that the world's largest living organism is actually a fungus 🌱 and it's been growing in Oregon for like, ever?! what's up with that?

I mean, I'm excited for more scientific progress, but can we get some hard data on these predictions? "A new color called olo" is interesting, but how was it scientifically validated? Was it just some artist's interpretation or actual physical properties measured? And those snails regrowing their eyes... sounds like science fiction. Are there any peer-reviewed articles to back this up?

🐦 the thing about wanting new species discovered 🌟 is its always gonna be hard to beat the cuteness of dogs and cats lol! but seriously though scientists do some amazing work out there & it's awesome that we get to learn more about them. plus who wouldn't wanna know if their pet loves 'em? 🐶💕

Scientists trying to find out if sitting down is bad for you 🤔. Like, how many times do we need to hear about the importance of exercise before it's proven? 💪 It's not like they haven't been saying that for years already 🙄. And what about all the other stuff they're going to figure out in 2026? 🤷‍♀️ A new fluffy mammal or a way to banish earworms from our minds? 😴🎵 Not exactly the most pressing issues facing humanity right now... 💔

the whole "is sitting down really bad for us" thing is like, so overrated 🤷‍♂️ we're all adults, we can choose whether or not to get up and move around, no need for science to tell us that 😊
