NY businesses prep for holiday crowds, sales … and maybe raids by immigration agents

New York businesses are bracing for the possibility of visits from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with some organizations handing out pamphlets and signs to inform workers and managers of their rights in case of an encounter.

The New York Immigration Coalition has been canvassing local businesses this year, visiting over 1,000 establishments, as the Trump administration has renewed promises to send more ICE officers to the city. According to estimates, roughly 412,000 undocumented immigrants without permanent legal immigration status live in New York City.

Experts warn that individuals should know their rights and be prepared for a visit from ICE agents. "Start making plans within each workplace about what to do if ICE shows up," advises Wennie Chin, senior director of community and civic engagement at the New York Immigration Coalition. "Every individual has the right to remain silent and not answer any questions they don't want to. They always have the right to refuse a search of their person and belongings without a judicial warrant."

Businesses can also take steps to protect themselves by labeling private areas where ICE cannot freely enter. Signs and curtains can be used to delineate these spaces, and managers should stress that these areas are private and that agents need a judicial warrant to enter.

"It's not just about running away or escalating the situation," Chin cautions. "It's about verbally stressing your rights and understanding what they are." Employees and business owners should also ask repeatedly if they're free to go and record any interactions with ICE.

The New York Immigration Coalition has created resources specifically for immigration enforcement safety at the workplace, which can be accessed on their website. The organization is also working to educate people about the difference between judicial and administrative warrants.

In an increasingly uncertain environment, businesses and individuals alike are taking steps to protect themselves and know their rights in case of a visit from ICE agents.

man i feel so anxious thinking about ice showing up at my workplace 🤯🚫, you think they really gonna start doing that? like what if u dont speak english fluently or dont know ur rights 🤷‍♂️, those pamphlets and signs r good but we need more ppl to take this seriously 🙏, businesses should be aware of dis too and not just rely on gov officials to protect them 👊

ICE agents are getting closer to NY 🚨🌆 I heard that some business owners are super paranoid about having these guys come around... like what if they just wanna ask some questions? But honestly, it's better to be safe than sorry, right? They should def take those pamphlets and signs seriously. I mean, who doesn't want to know their rights in case of an "unwanted" visit from the authorities? 🤷‍♀️

I'm getting really frustrated with all this... 😩 I mean, I get it, immigration laws need to be followed, but how can we even know what's going on? There are so many people living here without papers, just trying to make a life for themselves and their families. 🤯 It's like, they're already scared, now ICE is coming knocking at our doors... I don't think it's fair that businesses have to worry about this too - can't we just coexist peacefully? 🙅‍♀️ And what's with all these pamphlets and signs? Can't we just have a simple conversation about what's going on? It feels like everything is so complicated... 😤

omg, this is getting crazy 🤯... so many ppl living in NYC without papers & it's like, super stressful for businesses too 🤝 they gotta worry about ICE showing up & what happens next 😬 i mean, can't we just have a smooth immigration process already? 🙄 anyway, the NY Immigration Coalition is doing a good job, imo 💯 at least they're educating ppl on their rights & how to protect themselves 📚💼 businesses should def label private areas & managers should be all about stressing those rights 😎 also, recording interactions with ICE sounds like a good idea 📹 gotta have proof, right? 🤔

ICE shows up at my fave coffee shop in NYC and I'm supposed to just chill while they search for undocumented immigrants? No thanks! 🙄 I'd rather know what's going on and actually do something about it... like, report them or something.

The whole idea of labeling private areas with signs is pretty lame too... who needs a sign that says "ICE can't enter here" to keep me from doing my job? 🤦‍♀️ And why should I have to verbally stress my rights when all I want to do is get back to work? Can't we just have a straightforward conversation without all the drama and politeness? 💁‍♀️

I guess what really gets my goat is that businesses are being forced to take on this role as "immigration enforcement" agents... shouldn't they be focusing on selling coffee or whatever instead of dealing with ICE? 📦 Can't we just have a simple, safe workspace where nobody's got to worry about being deported?

ICE agents showing up at our businesses? Its a total stress 💼😩. I work in a small cafe in Manhattan and we're talking about putting up signs that say "Private Area - No Entry Without Warrant" 🚫. We don't wanna be like those places where people just run out the back door, but at the same time, who knows what's gonna happen if they show up? 😬

I think its really cool that the New York Immigration Coalition is doing this work and making resources available for us. Wennie Chin's advice to verbally stress your rights and ask repeatedly if you're free to go is super practical 🙌. And honestly, I just wanna know what my rights are so I can be prepared 💡.

It makes sense that businesses would want to take steps to protect themselves too - we rely on our customers and employees to feel safe and secure in the workplace. This whole thing is giving me anxiety 😬, but if we're all informed and prepared, maybe things will get better 🤞

omg this is so stressful 🤯 i dont even want to think about it what if ice shows up at my workplace? 😨 theyre talking about knowing ur rights but its hard to remember when ur just trying to do ur job i wish there wasnt so much drama going on with immigration rn 🙄 businesses should just be able to operate in peace without all this hassle 😤

ICE showing up at work is super stressful 😬... I mean, can't they just chill? 🤔 They're always talking about deporting people who don't even have papers, but what's the plan for people who actually got here by accident? 🤷‍♂️ My aunt had a cousin who was just trying to make a living in this country and suddenly ICE comes out of nowhere... it's just not right.

I'm not saying businesses shouldn't be prepared or anything, but can't we all just try to get along? 🙏 I mean, some people are here because they're fleeing war or persecution, you know? It's complicated 😔. Anyway, I guess it's good that the New York Immigration Coalition is making resources available for people... maybe it'll help prevent some crazy situations from happening.

I was just thinking, have you guys tried those new coffee shops downtown? I mean, they're super trendy but honestly, the lines are so long sometimes it's like they expect everyone to have an extra hour to spare 😂. Anyway, back to this whole immigration thing... my aunt's friend is from NY and she said that even with all the warnings, people still don't know what their rights are in these situations. It's crazy how little education there is on this topic 🤯.

And can we talk about signage for a sec? I just put up a new sign at home that says "Beware of nosy neighbors" and it's already getting some weird looks from passersby 😂. Just saying, if someone does show up uninvited, they might not be there to make small talk.

It's interesting how these businesses are stepping up to provide pamphlets and signs for their employees... maybe we should do the same thing in our own homes? I mean, I'm all about being prepared and knowing my rights, but it's funny how little planning goes into everyday life sometimes 🤷‍♀️.

ICE agents showing up at workplaces? Like, super stressful 🤯. But, you know, we gotta be prepared, right? I'm all for knowing our rights and not getting caught off guard. It's like, just chill if they show up, 'kay? Tell them your rights and don't let them mess with you, fam! Businesses are being cool by labeling private areas and whatnot... that's some smart thinking 💡. And, honestly, it's all about knowing what to do in those situations. I mean, we're living in uncertain times, but we gotta look out for each other, you feel?

🙏 I'm seeing a lot of these pamphlets being handed out in NYC businesses lately... I'm not sure how effective they're gonna be tho 🤔. Like, what's the plan here? Are ppl really prepared for this? 💯 My cousin works at a small shop downtown and she's literally shaking just thinking about it 😅. ICE shows up and suddenly she's an expert on her rights? 🙄 Please, it's not that hard to Google "what to do if ICE comes to your workplace" 🤓. But I guess it's better than nothing... 👍

OMG, like I'm low-key freaked out thinking about all those undocumented immigrants living in NYC 🤯🌆! ICE agents showing up at workplaces is so stressful 💼😬. We need more resources like the NY Immigration Coalition's pamphlets and signs to educate everyone on their rights 📜👀. It's soooo important to know that you can remain silent and not answer questions if you don't want to 🤐. Let's get our workplaces ICE-ready 💪! Anyone got a plan B? #NYC #ImmigrationReform #WorkplaceSafety #KnowYourRights 🙌

🤔 Just got word that some NYC businesses are preparing for a potential ICE raid 🚨! I mean, can you blame them? It's already stressful enough trying to keep up with all the new gadgets and tech trends 😩. But seriously, it's super important for workers and business owners to know their rights if they do get visited by ICE agents 💼. Like, Wennie Chin said it best - just staying silent and not answering questions you don't want to is key 🗣️! And if you're gonna get raided, at least try to document everything and ask repeatedly if you can leave 👀. The NYC Immigration Coalition has some awesome resources on their website that are super helpful for anyone who wants to stay safe and informed 💻.

ICE's presence is creeping into our daily lives, and it's scary 🤯... I mean, who doesn't want to feel safe at work? Businesses are stepping up with pamphlets and signs, but some folks might not even know they have rights in the first place 🙅‍♀️. We need to be informed about these things, especially since 412k undocumented immigrants are living here in NYC 🗽️.

So, what's the takeaway? Just 'cause you're undocumented doesn't mean your rights disappear 🚫... You've got the right to remain silent and refuse a search without a judicial warrant 🤐. Businesses can also label private areas with signs and curtains to keep ICE out 👀.

It's all about being prepared and knowing your rights, but it's not just about 'survival mode' 🌪️... It's about maintaining dignity at work 💼. Employees and business owners should be empowered to say 'no' and ask for a judicial warrant or to leave when they feel uncomfortable 😒.

We need more resources like the NY Immigration Coalition's website, which has info on immigration enforcement safety in the workplace 📊. Educating people about these differences between judicial and administrative warrants is key 🔍.

The uncertainty around ICE visits can be overwhelming, but being informed and prepared is our best defense 💪...

omg u guys this is soooo stressful 🤯 i mean i get it we need laws 2 be enforced but can't they just focus on the ppl who r breaking the law instead of innocent people trying 2 make a living? 🙄 anyway, i think its super cool that there r ppl like Wennie Chin advocating 4 workers rights and educating businesses on how 2 handle ICE visits 👏

i mean its not rocket science but u gotta know ur rights and be prepared 🤔 like if ur in private u can just stay silent and refuse any search without a warrant 🚫 and businesses should label their private areas so agents cant just b like "oh i can enter anywhere i want" no way bb 😂

anyway, lets all just take a deep breath and try 2 stay calm when ice comes knocking 💆‍♀️ we got this ppl! 👍

ICE agents are like ghosts, you never know when they're gonna show up 🤔... I work with some people who are undocumented and it's super stressful for them, they always have to be on edge, wondering if the cops or ICE are at their doorstep. It's not right that businesses have to worry about this too, can't we just live our lives without fear of being deported or arrested? 🤷‍♀️
