NYC's Village Halloween Parade steps off Friday night: What to know

New York's Village Halloween Parade is Set to Make a Potluck of Memories This Year. Here's What You Need To Know.

In the midst of October's spooky season, New Yorkers are gearing up for one of the most anticipated events in their calendar: the 52nd annual Village Halloween Parade. While it's not your average parade – with its eclectic mix of participants and spectators – organizers have taken a fresh approach this year by embracing the concept of "It's a Potluck." The idea is simple yet profound: to come together, share food, and reconnect.

Food rescue organization City Harvest will be the grand marshal for the event, highlighting the importance of unity in the face of adversity. As the country grapples with food insecurity due to government shutdowns, this theme couldn't have been more timely. The group anticipates collecting over 86 million pounds of food this year alone.

While the parade itself kicks off at 7 p.m. along Sixth Avenue from Canal Street to 15th Street, spectators are advised to arrive even earlier to secure a spot amidst the massive crowds. If you prefer to avoid the throngs, don't worry – the event will be televised and streamed live on NY1.

For those who do manage to join in the festivities, there's good news: it's free to attend from the sidelines or participate in the parade itself, provided you're willing to don a costume. Tickets with special benefits are available, including "skip the line entry" that grants access to a secret backstage area and a chance to mingle with performers.

However, beware of traffic – several streets around downtown will be closed for the duration of the event, causing congestion in the area. Organizers are urging everyone to plan ahead and leave early to avoid the mayhem.

After the parade ends at 11 p.m., attendees can continue the celebration at the "Vampire Ball" afterparty, hosted by House of Yes in Industry City, Brooklyn. Tickets have sold out, but those who secured them will be treated to a night of revelry until 5 a.m.

As for the grand prize, a $5,000 award will be given to the person with the most impressive costume – proof that creativity and community can indeed come together in the spirit of Halloween.

So, don your best costume and get ready to join the potluck of memories. This year's Village Halloween Parade promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who participate.

This village halloween parade is more than just a party 🎃👻 - its about people coming together & sharing food, creating a sense of community in these crazy times 🤝. I love how they're using it as an opportunity to raise awareness about food insecurity too 🍽️. And the fact that its free for everyone who wants to attend or just watch is amazing 🎉. But, can we please talk about traffic congestion around here? It's like, I get it, its a big event but do we really need to close down entire streets 🚗?

I'm so down for this! 🎃 I love how they're making it a potluck, you know? Sharing food and vibes with strangers can be super liberating. And the theme is perfect for these uncertain times - we really do need to come together more often. I've been thinking of trying out some DIY costumes myself, maybe upcycle some old materials into something spooky and creative. 🕷️ The parade looks like so much fun, too! If I had to attend in person (which I probably won't since NYC traffic is a nightmare 😂), I'd want to make sure to bring plenty of snacks to share with my neighbors... er, fellow parade-goers. And yeah, let's all try to avoid the traffic chaos and plan ahead instead! 🚗👍

I'm so down for this 🎃👻! I love how they're turning a spooky event into a potluck of memories – it's all about community and coming together, you know? It's like, we're all about that #FoodForThought vibe 🤔, especially with City Harvest at the helm. Food insecurity is no joke, and I'm glad they're using this platform to raise awareness. The parade itself sounds lit 🔥, but let's be real, avoiding traffic is key – I'd rather enjoy some Halloween tunes from my own living room, tbh 🎶.

Anyway, if you do manage to join the festivities, just remember: safety first 👍! And don't forget to bring your appetite... and a costume that'll blow everyone away 💥. It's gonna be a night to remember, potluck-style 🤪.

omg, i'm so down for this! a potluck theme is genius 🤩 - who doesn't love sharing food with others? and it's such a great way to bring people together during spooky season. i've heard the Village Halloween Parade is always lit 🔥, but adding this element of community takes it to the next level. i'm planning on dressing up (obvs) and joining in on the festivities. did anyone else know about the food rescue theme tho? city harvest sounds like an amazing org 🙌 - fingers crossed they hit those 86 million pounds! traffic is gonna be wild, but worth it for the vibes 🚗💃

omg u gotta try this 52nd village halloween parade 🎃🕷️ its like a big potluck feast 🍰😋 plus they got food rescue org city harvest as grand marshal 👏 and theres even a $5000 costume prize 🤑 can you believe it?! 🤯 traffic might be a problem tho 🚗💨 but like, plan ahead and leave early, lol 😂 its free to attend or participate, just dont forget ur costume 🎭👻

OMG, I'm literally dyin' over this idea of a potluck parade 🤯👻! Like, how cool is it that people are gonna come together and share food? It's so #KindnessMatters and #CommunityFirst 💕🎃. And, tbh, City Harvest being the grand marshal is, like, super inspiring 🙌💖. Food insecurity is such a huge issue right now, and it's awesome that this event is highlighting it 🤝. Plus, who wouldn't want to attend a parade with awesome costumes and good vibes? 🎉👗 #VillageHalloweenParade #PotluckParade #FoodRescue #CommunityLove

I think it's awesome that they're making this year's parade a potluck thingy... I mean, it's about time we put people over profits, you know? 🤝 Food insecurity is no joke and City Harvest does some amazing work. It's crazy to think 86 million pounds of food is being collected this year alone! On a more practical note, though, what's up with the traffic alert? Can't they figure out a way to make it less chaotic? Like, come on, people have been preparing for Halloween weeks ago... I'm sure we can all plan ahead. And, btw, who needs tickets for the afterparty when you can just show up at House of Yes and party like it's 1999? 🎉

omg I'm literally counting down the days till the parade 🎃🕷️! I mean, a potluck theme? genius! it's not just about dressing up in crazy costumes, but also sharing food and connecting with people 🤝. City Harvest is an amazing org to have on board, btw 🙌. And can we talk about how timely this event is? food insecurity is such a big issue right now 😔. I'm def gonna be there, dressed as a zombie chef 🍴💀... who's gonna top that?! 😉

omg i cant even think about halloween without thinking about ny village halloween parade 😍 its like the highlight of october for so many new yorkers! and this year theyre making it even more special by having a potluck theme 🤝 where everyone brings their favorite dish to share...its gonna be so much fun! food rescue org city harvest is also such an amazing addition, its all about unity in the face of adversity and i think its super timely given whats going on with food insecurity. gotta plan ahead for traffic tho, but its worth it for the free parade and vampire ball afterwards 🎉💃

🤔 I think it's kinda weird that they're doing a potluck this year... like, isn't that just for actual people sharing food or something? But at the same time, it sounds super cool and will probably bring everyone together... unless you're trying to avoid crowds, then it's more of a hassle... 🚫 I mean, who needs to deal with all those people when there's gonna be traffic and stuff anyway? 🤷‍♂️ And why do they need to close down the streets around downtown? Can't we just have the parade on like, one road or something? 📦

Ugh 🙄 I'm still trying to figure out why they had to make this event a "potluck" thing... like, who thought it was a good idea to take something that's literally meant to be enjoyed by yourself and share it with everyone else? It just feels like an excuse for people to bring their weird food to the streets and make a mess 🤢. And don't even get me started on the whole "community" vibe... I'm all for community, but can we please just have a normal parade without all the extra fuss? 🙃

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole "potluck" thing 🤯. I mean, what's next? A Thanksgiving feast where everyone brings a side dish just to sit there and eat it with strangers? 😂 Just kidding... kind of. But seriously, I think it's kinda cool that they're focusing on community and sharing food instead of just having a wild costume party. And hey, free tickets or not, who doesn't love a good parade?! 🎉 It's like the Village Halloween Parade is giving us all permission to let loose and have some fun. Just watch out for those traffic jams... I swear, I'm too old for this stuff 😂.

Ugh I'm so over parades and afterparties 🤪 what's up with people showing up in traffic jam just to see a bunch of old ppl dressing up? Can't they just stay home and watch Netflix like normal ppl 📺 And btw $5k for the best costume? that's like, so basic 🤑

I JUST CAN'T WAIT FOR THE VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE!!! IT'S GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN THIS YEAR WITH THE POTLUCK IDEA! I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T LOVE FOOD?! AND I'M LOVING THAT CITY HARVEST IS TAKING CENTER STAGE AS THE GRAND MARSHAL. IT'S SUCH A GREAT WAY TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT FOOD INSECURITY. AND OF COURSE, THE COSTUME CONTEST IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN!!! 🎃👻💖

Man I'm so down for this Village Halloween Parade thing 🎃 it's like they're taking community vibes to a whole new level with the potluck idea, you know? People coming together sharing food and reconnecting is what it's all about, right? And with City Harvest being the grand marshal, it's like they're saying we can make a difference in our own neighborhoods. 86 million pounds of food collected this year? That's insane! 🤯 Traffic might be a bummer, but I guess that's just part of the experience. Anyone going dressed to impress for the costume prize?

OMG 🤯 this is so cool! I love the idea of a potluck where everyone brings food to share - it's like one big happy family... but on Halloween? 😂 how do they plan to get all that food there without some people going hungry? also, can you imagine seeing all those costumes walking down Sixth Avenue? 🎃👗 I'm kinda bummed that traffic is gonna be a mess tho... my friends and I were planning on going down there, but now we're thinking of watching it from home instead 🏠

omg i'm literally so down for this!!! 🎃🕷️ it's like the whole community is coming together to share food, love & all that good vibes! and can we talk about how amazing it is that City Harvest is involved? 86 million pounds of food to be collected?! wowzers that's just insane... i mean in a good way 😂. plus who doesn't want to skip the line entry for a secret backstage area 🤫. but seriously, traffic around downtown is gonna be a total nightmare so pls plan ahead and leave early 🚗💨. also anyone thinking of going to the Vampire Ball afterparty has got my back... 5am and all that 🕰️👻

"Believe you can walk on water and you're halfway there." 🌊🎃 It's amazing how a simple idea like "It's a Potluck" can bring people together in the midst of chaos, reminding us that even in difficult times, community and unity can make all the difference.
