NYPD releases video showing police shooting 22-year-old man in mental health crisis

Body-Camera Footage of NYPD Shooting of 22-Year-Old Man in Mental Health Crisis Released

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) on Tuesday released the body-camera footage showing the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man, Jabez Chakraborty, whose family had sought mental health assistance. The shocking video captures the tense moments leading up to the officer's deadly response.

According to authorities, police were called to Chakraborty's home in Queens after someone reported a man breaking glass. However, upon arrival, officers encountered a distraught individual who was having a mental breakdown. Despite his family members' attempts to intervene and calm him down, Chakraborty picked up a kitchen knife and approached the police, prompting them to fire four shots.

The footage reveals that when officers entered the home, they found Chakraborty in the kitchen helping his family with an unknown task. However, as soon as he saw the police, he turned towards them with the knife, ignoring his loved ones' pleas to stop.

The released video does not show any questioning by the police and ends abruptly after the officer fires the fatal shots. The NYPD has maintained that Chakraborty's family requested an "involuntary removal," which automatically triggered a police response.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has expedited the release of the footage, citing concerns from the family about being asked immigration-related questions and having their phones searched without justification. The Mayor emphasized that Chakraborty was diagnosed with schizophrenia and should have received mental health support instead of a police response.

The incident has sparked calls for an investigation into the use of force by the NYPD, as well as potential misconduct on the part of the officers involved. Family members and activists have drawn parallels to the shooting of Win Rozario, another young man from the same Bangladeshi Christian community who was killed by NYPD officers responding to a mental health call in March 2024.

The PBA President has defended the officers' actions, stating that they were forced to act under "terrible circumstances" with no time for de-escalation. However, critics argue that the police response was disproportionate and unjustified given Chakraborty's mental state at the time.

I'm really disturbed by this footage 🀯. Four shots? Can you imagine if it was your kid or a friend who just snapped under pressure? I feel so sorry for Jabez' family, who are already dealing with their own trauma and mental health struggles. The police response is not just about saving lives but also about handling situations that require compassion and empathy 🀝.

I'm also worried about the 'involuntary removal' protocol - it seems like a recipe for disaster 🚨. If someone's having a mental breakdown, shouldn't they be taken to a safe space with support rather than being met with force? And what's up with the lack of questioning by the police? Shouldn't they have been trying to understand what was going on instead of just reacting?

This footage is gonna haunt me for a while... it makes me wish we had better systems in place to handle mental health crises πŸ€•.

can't believe this is still a thing πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ in 2025 we're still debating whether the cops should've handled a guy having a meltdown like he's a threat to national security lol. newsflash: having a knife doesn't automatically mean you're gonna hurt someone unless you actually intend to πŸ’” but hey, who needs common sense when you've got a "request for involuntary removal" πŸ™„ sounds like an excuse to me btw why do we always have to prioritize the cop's narrative? shouldn't it be about what really happened in that moment? πŸ€”

I cant believe what i just saw!!! 🀯 this is insane! why did it have to end in a shootout?! jabez was clearly having a meltdown & his family was trying to help him, but police ended up killing him. its not like he posed a threat to them or anything. 4 shots are WAY too many. i think the cops should be held accountable for this & theres gotta be better ways to handle mental health crises than with guns drawn πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.

πŸ€• this whole situation is super messed up... i mean, a 22 yr old having a mental breakdown, what do u expect? family asks for help, nypd shows up & kills him... its not even like he posed a threat, just holding a knife πŸ—‘οΈ. can we pls talk about de-escalation techniques here? why did they even need to pull their guns out in the first place? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ & btw, why is it always the mental health crisis that turns into police brutality? πŸ’” we gotta do better than this πŸ‘Š

I'm really worried about this latest footage πŸ€•... four shots from police officers, can you imagine if it was your sibling or parent? The family is still trying to process what happened, and they should be getting more support than just a video release. I get that the officer's lives are at risk too, but surely there were other ways to handle this situation safely? πŸ€” It's also really concerning that Chakraborty was going through a mental health crisis and didn't receive the help he needed instead of being shot.

This is all so fishy 🐟... I mean, what if the family really did ask for an "involuntary removal" but it was more than just a request? What if there's some hidden agenda here that we don't know about yet? The fact that the Mayor had to expedite the release of the footage because of immigration-related questions is already raising red flags. And what about the officer who fired the fatal shots? Was he really under "terrible circumstances" or was it just a case of him panicking and overreacting? πŸ€” I'm not saying it's definitely a conspiracy, but there are too many unanswered questions here for me to brush it off as just a tragic accident.

man this is so sad πŸ€• it seems like a mental health crisis just escalated to a deadly situation because of cops not knowing what to do 😩 they're trying to say he was armed but the footage shows him being all calm and just holding a knife, it's like they were waiting for an excuse to shoot him πŸ’” and now his family is left with nothing but questions πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ why didn't they call emergency services? why did the police have to be there in the first place? 🚨 it's not like he was being violent or anything, just having a meltdown 😴

πŸ˜” this is so sad what happened to Jabez... it's like he needed help not a cop shootout his fam is still grieving πŸ€• and now we're talking about immigration questions like that's gonna be a huge issue for them πŸ™„ can't we just focus on mental health support instead of police force? 🀝

🀯 I'm still trying to process this... like what even is going on here? The NYPD is literally just showing up with guns blazing instead of calling a crisis hotline or mental health services like a normal human being would want. And now they're blaming Jabez's family for requesting an "involuntary removal" which basically means they wanted their loved one to get the help they need, not be shot by the cops? πŸš«πŸ’” The fact that the police just ignored the family's pleas and kept shooting is just insane. Can't we even have a conversation about mental health without it being a death sentence? And what's with all these other incidents like Win Rozario... it feels like the NYPD is just looking for excuses to shoot people who are already vulnerable. We need real accountability here, not some watered-down explanation that just makes everything worse πŸ™„

🀯 just watching this footage is giving me so much anxiety its like they literally had a guy in a mental breakdown and they just went full guns blazing on him and his fam without even trying to help him anymore like what was really going on with that family requesting an "involuntary removal" and still the cops come in and shoot him 4 times is some super concerning stuff.

πŸ€” what a mess... I mean, can't we just talk about this guy's health issues instead of shooting him? 🚨 the video is super unsettling - you see this kid just calm down, then BAM! 4 shots fired. that's not de-escalation, that's an execution 😑 and what's with the "involuntary removal" thing? sounds like a convenient excuse to me πŸ™„ ... I don't trust these cops' stories. have we learned anything from all these mental health-related incidents? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it seems like we're just trying to justify a system that's already broken πŸ’”
