'One of the greatest comic talents': tributes paid to actor Catherine O'Hara

Tributes have poured out from the worlds of showbiz and politics as beloved Canadian comedian Catherine O'Hara has passed away at the age of 71 after a brief illness.

The loss was felt deeply by Schitt's Creek co-creator Dan Levy, who called O'Hara "a legend" and said she would be deeply missed. He remembered her fondly, describing their working relationship as "our friendship", adding that he cherished every funny memory they shared together.

Eugene Levy, Catherine's long-time collaborator and father of actor Schitt's Creek co-star Daniel Levy, also paid tribute to O'Hara. He described her as an "honour" to work with, saying words were "inadequate" to express his loss.

Richard E Grant, who starred alongside O'Hara in the 2006 film Penelope, called her death an "incalculable loss". He remembered the couple's friendship fondly, sharing stories of their LA home visits and dinners together.

Michael Keaton, who starred alongside O'Hara in Beetlejuice, described her as his "pretend wife" and said he would miss her dearly. Alec Baldwin also paid tribute to O'Hara, describing her as "one of the greatest comic talents in the movie business".

Seth Rogen, co-star in Apple TV comedy series The Studio, called O'Hara's passing "devastating", recalling how she made him want to make movies and created a show that was worthy of her presence.

The former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau called O'Hara a "beloved Canadian icon" while the country's current leader Mark Carney described Canada as having lost a "legend". In a statement, Carney said he joined all Canadians in mourning, adding that O'Hara had earned her place in the canon of Canadian comedy.

O'Hara is survived by her husband Bo Welch and sons Matthew and Luke. The family will hold a private celebration of her life.
